I guarantee a response within 48 hours but will likely get back to you much more quickly. Course description and student objectives The purpose of this course is to introduce you to some of the more common ethical issues and dilemmas journalists encounter and procedures for how to respond. This course is not designed to give you a list of rules for ethical behavior. Rather, it is intended to equip you with tools for, and practice in, thinking about how to identify and resolve the kinds of ethical problems you may face as a journalist. Upon successful completion of this course, you ll be able to: 1. Identify ethical dilemmas in journalism, including determining how to anticipate and consider different stakeholders perspectives on those dilemmas. 2. Identify and describe a variety of alternative responses to journalistic ethical problems. 3. Use an ethical decision- making model to reason through such problems. 4. Make and justify decisions about which responses are ethically sound. Required text and readings The Elements of Journalism: What Newspeople Should Know and the Public Should Expect (Third Edition), by Bill Kovach and Tom Rosenstiel (ISBN- 10: ) You re expected to complete the assigned readings and be prepared to discuss them in class. The readings include the Elements of Journalism textbook, documents I post on our Canvas page and, on occasion, the Society of Professional Journalists Code of Ethics, an easy- to- read one- pager. Completing these in line with the schedule at the end of this syllabus is crucial to understanding what we ll be doing in the course. Also, as explained below, there will be occasional pop quizzes based on the readings, so it s best not to neglect them. Coursework 1. Participation. The topic of ethics lends itself to discussion, so we ll be doing that quite a bit in class. Participating in discussions is required, thus making attendance required, as will be explained more in the section on class policies. You re expected

2 to do the readings before class and listen attentively during class. You should demonstrate that you re thinking about the issues by asking questions, offering your own opinions and justifying these opinions. (Please remember to be respectful of those who may hold a position different from yours.) Along with participating in class, participation points come from pop quizzes based on the readings and the occasional response paper. These papers are one- to two- page write- ups that give you practice in applying ethical reasoning to situations you might encounter professionally. They will also help prepare you for our two exams and the group project. The papers count as participation points because they re graded based on completion: If you take them seriously and turn them in on time, you ll receive full credit. 2. Exams. The two exams, a midterm and a final, cover roughly half the course each. Expect multiple- choice questions and some short essays. The essays will be scored based on how clearly you demonstrate your understanding of the issues, your ability to apply ethical reasoning and decision- making models to those issues, and your skill in clearly expressing and defending your position. More specific details about the exams will be provided closer to those dates. 3. Group projects. You ll be divided into groups of four to six, and each group will explore a different ethical dilemma journalists have faced in the past or more recently. Similar to the exams essay questions, these projects will asses your abilities in demonstrating a clear understanding of the issue, applying ethical reasoning and decision- making models to that issue, and articulating and defending how you yourself would handle the situation. Groups will present their respective issues to their classmates and lead a classroom discussion. More specific details about the topics and the grading will be provided later in class. Grading totals Participation points (25 total) o In- class participation 5 points o Attendance 10 points o Pop quizzes and response papers 10 points Exams (50 total) o Midterm 25 points o Final 25 points Group project (25 total) 25 points 100 points

3 Grade scale (scores ending in.5 or higher are rounded up to next whole number) A = C+ = D = B+ = C = E = 59 and below B = D+ = Class policies 1. Attendance and tardiness. Attendance is mandatory and will be taken at the beginning of each class. Excessive tardiness and unexcused absences will affect your participation points. You are permitted to miss one class without documentation or penalty, but that doesn t mean you automatically get to make up an assignment, quiz or exam. With proper documentation, you are allowed miss class because of an illness; family emergency; athletic, legal or military obligation; or religious holiday but you have to let me know at least 24 hours in advance. Failure to do so, even with proper documentation, will likely mean I won t allow you to make up an assignment. 2. Deadlines. Due dates are strict, and assignments should be handed in at the beginning of class on the date they re due. The only exceptions come from the aforementioned excused absences that must be supported by documentation and approved at least 24 hours prior to class. Without prior approval, you receive an automatic zero no exceptions. 3. Classroom demeanor. The discussions are what should make this class energetic and fun, but that will only happen if everyone participates fully. As already noted, each student is expected to complete the readings prior to class; those who don t do so or participate in the discussion will lose participation points. 4. Cell phones and other devices. Research shows that students who multitask in class end up learning less and thus receive lower grades. Therefore, cell phones and computers are not permitted. I realize communications is a technology- driven field and that a few of you might use your devices responsibly, but unfortunately, the majority of your classmates flock to social media and other sites rather than paying attention. If you re seen using a phone or computer, you ll be asked to turn it off and put it up, and you ll lose participation points. For taking notes, use a pen and paper, and if you feel you won t be able to write quickly enough, you re welcome to bring in an audio recorder. 5. Academic integrity. University of Florida students live by an honor code that prohibits academic dishonesty, such as, but not limited to, cheating, plagiarism, fabrication of sources or information from sources, reusing a paper from another class, writing a similar paper for two classes, drawing too heavily on another s work for your own, and having someone else complete your work for you. If you re unsure of whether something constitutes a violation of academic integrity, as me before you do it to avoid the possibility of being reporting to the university s Office of Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution. UF s full guidelines on at conduct- honor- code. Spotting academic

4 dishonesty is easier than you might think from a teacher s perspective, and committing it means failing the assignment, possibly failing the entire course and opening yourself to possible discipline for the university. Ignorance is not an excuse. 6. Disability assistance. Students with disabilities may seek reasonable accommodations by first registering with UF s Disability Resource Center (Reid Hall, , The center will provide you with documentation, which must then be brought to me during office hours within the first two weeks of class. Failure to do so within this timeframe will likely limit the possibilities for accommodations. 7. Student success and seeking help. To ensure you re meeting obligations concerning assignments and participation and that the class is proving to be enjoyable and purposeful, you re encouraged to come see me during office hours often if not weekly. I d be happy to also discuss any questions you have about academia or the media field in general. A terrific, free resource that helps students manage stress and life is the UF Counseling and Wellness Center at 3190 Radio Road on campus. At the end of the course, students are asked to give an evaluation at Evaluations are typically open during the last two or three weeks of the semester. One additional reading we ll be covering not listed in the dates below is the Society of Professional Journalists Code of Ethics, a somewhat universally agreed- upon document among journalism organizations in the U.S. that concisely spells out what it means to be an ethical journalist on one page. It s not listed because we ll be dissecting individual provisions throughout the semester as our class time allows. The bottom line is: Don t worry about doing any with the Code of Ethics unless I say something in class.
