3 I. COURSE PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES A. PURPOSE: Course is intended to provide understanding of the complexities of launching a new business. Topics for investigation include the need for developing a business plan, identifying and marketing to potential customers, financial planning, and legal risks and benefits. B. OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of the course students will: 1. have a basic understanding of the nature of management and marketing for a small business 2. have an understanding of the forms of business ownership, franchising issues, and buying an existing business 3. have an understanding of basic financing, cash flow, accounting for a small business, and know what is contained in and the reasons for creating a business plan. II. COURSE POLICIESin addition to the following policies, published college policies in the Student Handbook regarding academic and student conduct apply. When you sign up for a college class, you are taking the responsibility to complete the assignments, ask questions if something is unclear, plan and act proactively rather than procrastinate, and study enough to achieve your personal GPA goals. A. PARTICIPATION You will receive 20% of your overall grade for course participation. In addition to completing your assignments and tests by the stated deadlines, a large part of this score comes through your participation in an online Discussion Board. Topics will be posted for you to debate or comment on through entries or replies

4 that you will make on a weekly basis. In order to receive your full participation points, you must keep up with reading and participating in EACH FORUM TOPIC by adding threads to create your own topic and you must make replies (questions/comments) to your classmates thread. The QUALITY of each written entry, utilization of proper grammar, spelling, capitalization, punctuation, etc., as well as quantity of response will be considered for grading purposes. Sloppily written responses, or simply mimicking someone elses respones will receive NO CREDIT. All entries for the week must be made prior to 7:00 p.m. on Sundays. Entries made after the deadline will receive the grade of ZERO for that week s participation. NOTE: In order to avoid being dropped from the roster, ALL of week one and week two assignments need to be submitted by the stated deadlines, your participation must be ongoing and must be made on a regular basis. Even though the weekly deadline for Discussion Board entries is extended out to a Sunday, YOU NEED NOT WAIT until the weekend to make your weekly posting. You can be proactive and schedule all your academicwork during the weekdays and submit by Friday if you so choose! B. STUDY GUIDES Chapter Study Guides have been designed to guide you through your reading of the text. The Study Guides help point out what is, in my opinion, significant information in each chapter. However, be advised that tests are NOT an exact match to study guides so you should be prepared to read entire chapters of text. Do not simply search for study guide answers! Study guides are not turned in to instructor. If you have difficulty while working on study guides, you are encouraged to post to the Discussion Board so that your classmates can discuss the material with you, and/or your instructor with detailed questions. C. TESTS/EXAMS Chapter Tests may be completed independently via Blackboard. It is strongly recommended that tests be taken on a computer that has direct connect access (not modem dialin). Chapter Tests are available immediately, may be taken any time you are ready, but, MUST be completed prior to Sunday at 7:00 p.m. according to the stated course calendar schedule. You may work in advance in this web class, but you may not work behind the stated schedule or your work will receive zero credit. Timed, Chapter Tests may be accessed ONE time only. Chapter tests may be a combination of multiple choice, true/false, short answer and fill in the blanks Combined Chapter Test scores comprise 50% of your overall course grades. Chapter Tests online are self/auto correcting so you will see your scores immediately. However, your Midterm and Final Exams will be ESSAY format. Those two exams comprise 20% of your overall course grade. You can expect to get your essay exam grades back from me within one week of the exam deadline (not necessarily one week from your submission date if you submit early). The essay exams will be corrected in the order in which they are received. Please have patience with me,

5 since each essay exam has to be read carefully in order to be graded fairly, these exams cannot be online/auto scored, so they take time! D. SEMESTER PROJECT Find an entrepreneur in a field/career that you might consider going into. Design 30 questions and then ask your chosen entrepreneur the questions you ve designed, in a live interview. Prepare a 3 page singlespaced type report with a separate reference page that includes the entrepreneur s contact information (i.e. name/address/business name/phone/fax/ /website, etc.). Then share what you ve learned about the entrepreneur and his/her business by attaching your report to the Discussion Board for all to view and comment on. This project is worth 10% of your overall grade. Projects must be completed and posted to Blackboard by WEDNESDAY. Additional guidelines for the project are described on Bb under the Assignments category. E. GRADING Chapter Tests will account for 50% of your final grade, Essay exams; Midterm =10 % and Final Essay Exam = 10% of your final grade; a semesterlong project = 10% of your final grade; and class participation = 20% of your total grade. Weekly participation scores will be explained in weekly announcements. In determining your final grade, the following schedule will be used: Final Average A % B % C % D % F 59.9 % or below Special arrangements may be made for students who have medically documented learning disabilities. College policy states that students desiring accommodations must selfidentify to your instructor. It is your responsibility to request accommodations that suit your specific situation. F. EXTRA CREDIT no extra credit or grades of incomplete will be issued. G. TUTORING OR EXTRA HELP SESSIONSIf you encounter difficulties at any time during the semester, please do not hesitate to contact me. I'll be glad to set up an appointment with you, in person or over the network.

6 H. WHEN ASSIGNMENTS ARE DUE All assignments are due to me on the assigned date. Assignments not completed and/or turned in on the due date will be awarded a ZERO. If you encounter extenuating circumstances which significantly disrupt your ability to meet deadlines it is your responsibility to contact the instructor, to explain and try to negotiate alternative deadlines. I. PLAGIARISM AND CHEATINGrefer to the Student Handbook. It is important to keep in mind that academic dishonesty, apart from showing lack of seriousness and responsibility, is a major offense, which can lead to failure of the course and to suspension or expulsion from the College.
