Course Information: Course Prefix/ No. Course Name Credits SPC-112 Interpersonal Communication 3 Course Description Interpersonal Communication examines the skills of interpersonal communication in both a dual or group situation. It includes an investigation into the process of communication, language, nonverbal communication, listening, self-concept, emotions, or the nature of relationships and conflict. Demonstrate knowledge of the importance on interpersonal communication on the self 1.1 Identify and compare the various communication models. 1.2 Demonstrate a knowledge of self-concept and its effect on self-esteem and identity management 1.3 Identify the factors that influence each individual s perceptions 1.4 Demonstrate a knowledge of the effect of emotions on interpersonal communication 2 Demonstrate knowledge of various methods of communication 2.1 Identify the value and the challenges of using verbal communication 2.2 Identify the value and the challenges of using nonverbal communication 2.3 Identify the value and the challenges of using listening skills 3 Demonstrate knowledge of establishing and maintaining interpersonal relationships 3.1 Identify the various stages of interpersonal relationships 3.2 Identify the role of power in relationships 3.3 Identify the factors which contribute to a healthy communication climate

2 3.4 Define and distinguish among assertiveness, non-assertiveness, and aggressiveness 3.5 Identify the steps in a model of conflict resolution Course Practices: 1. Participation/Attendance Standards: For success in this course, it is very important that you are not waiting until the last second to complete the your assignments. Your participation in all assignments/activities for this class is vital for you to stay caught up. Attendance will be assessed based upon completion of the day s assignments. 2. Feedback Policy: s will be responded to within 48 hours (except on weekends). Turnaround time for all assignments will be no later than two weeks. 3. Standards for written work: All written assignments should be typed using 11 or 12 point font and be double spaced. Appropriate grammar and punctuation is very important. Proper grammar and syntax should be used on all papers and assignments, including in s to your instructor. Your assignments should be submitted as a Word document (.doc) or a Rich Text Format (.rtf) if you do not have Microsoft Word. 4. Late papers and assignments: No late assignments will be accepted. Assignments are due by the dates indicated on the assignments, schedule, course calendar, and folders. 5. Reading Expectations: Read all chapters as assigned. It is up to you to complete course reading within the recommended time frame. Since this is an online course, it is extremely important that you keep up to date with your readings. 6. Exams: Exams must be taken on the assigned dates. There are no exceptions for a missed exam. Two exams will be given. 7. Academic Integrity: Higher education institutions who offer courses online have always been concerned with the potential for academic dishonesty given the physical distance between instructor and students. The fact is that academic dishonesty cannot be completely eliminated in either online or face-to-face courses. However, you can foster a greater sense of academic integrity in your course by implementing a few rules and strategies. When considering how important academic integrity is to any educational institution, one of the most important steps you can take as an instructor is to broach the subject early on with your students beyond the standard paragraphs you post in your syllabus. Make them aware that you and the university value academic integrity in all aspects of research, course work and communication. Online, communicate with them via a blog post, an announcement, or schedule a live classroom session. Explain to them what exactly academic integrity is and why it is important to them. With the subject out in the open, your students know that you expect them to be responsible online scholars. It will also inform them that you will actually be observing their submitted work.

3 8. Extra Credit: There are no extra credit opportunities for this course 9. Netiquette Guidelines: Be professional at all times. You are preparing yourself to be a career professional. Remember this as you communicate online. Be considerate. The sending of spam mail to fellow classmates or instructors in not allowed. Be respectful of other people. Everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion. Be calm. If you are upset or frustrated, keep this out of your communications with your fellow students or instructors. An angry or sarcastic comment does little to win respect or cooperation. Think about what you are going to say in an unemotional, professional manner. Provide adequate information when asking for help or assistance from your instructors or classmates. Humor and sarcasm. Because there are no visual cues in distance education, humor and sarcasm are impossible to discern. Be very careful when interjecting humor and refrain from using any remarks that are sarcastic in nature. Harassment and other offensive behavior. The online learning environment is no place to harass, threaten, or embarrass others. Comments that can be viewed, as offensive, sexist, or racially motivated will not be tolerated. It is never appropriate to put anyone down because of his or her age, race, religion, color, sex, or sexual preference. Offensive material. Students may not post, transmit, promote, or distribute content that is racially, religiously, or ethnically offensive or is harmful, abusive, vulgar, sexually explicit, otherwise potentially offensive. Copyrights and intellectual property. Students may not post, transmit, promote, or distribute content that know or could reasonably be expected to know is illegal, or content that violates copyright or other protected intellectual property rights. Capital letters and bolding. In written communication, the use of capital letters and/or bolding is used for emphasis. In much of the corporate world, writing in all caps is considered yelling. Yelling is not tolerated in a residential classroom and, therefore, is not acceptable in any online communications with students. The course schedule and syllabus are subject to change as the course progresses. Grading 1. Quizzes: You will have a quiz over each chapter. The quizzes are 10 multiple choice questions and are worth 10 points. 2. Exams: Two multiple choice exams will be scheduled. Each exam is worth 50 points. 3. s: You will be assigned a 1-2 page reflection paper for each chapter. These papers will involve applying the lessons from the chapter to your own lives. These need to be typed and double spaced. Each paper is worth 20 points. 4. Movie Reviews: It is easier to see interpersonal communication when we are not emotionally involved. Therefore, we will be watching two movies giving you the opportunity to identify and analyze interpersonal communication. The criteria for each movie review will be different. Each movie review is worth 100 points.
