3 Reflections July-August-September 2016 Page 3 Hello from Pattie Dear Dodge County HCE Members, I have been very busy this spring. Thank you to so many of you who attended the Focus on Women Resource Fair in April. I enjoyed presenting on the Five Love Languages and about the importance of nurturing the relationships in our lives. One of the things people learned during the presentation was the 5:1 magic ratio. Dr. John Gottman has found that happy couples showed five positive interactions for every negative Pattie Carroll Family Living Educator and HCE Advisor interaction between them. This means it takes five positive actions to balance out every negative one. This was the 21 st year for the Focus on Women and it was quite successful. All had a great time! In addition, I am in the midst of finishing a six-week parenting class, I wrapped up teaching Raising a Thinking Child for sixty plus childcare providers, I held a summit to educate the community about adverse childhood experiences, I teamed up with Fond du Lac County to hold a poverty simulation with Waupun Area School District, and so much more. I also had the privilege of representing Epsilon Sigma Phi, the Wisconsin chapter, during a weeklong leadership conference in Washington DC this past spring called Public Issues Leadership Development. The conference is conducted by and for Extension professionals and volunteers; the annual conference prepares participants to engage in U.S. public policy and the legislative process. During the conference, I had the opportunity to connect with Wisconsin congressional representatives to discuss Extension impacts and issues. I am so grateful for the opportunity to attend the conference and I learned so much. Can you believe I am 50 years old and have never been to Washington DC? I will certainly go back. On a personal note, I plan to take extra personal and vacation days over the summer as my mom s health is not good and I want to spend as much time with her as I can. Life is too short not to spend the time we need to with the people who mean the most to us. However, I look forward to seeing many of you throughout the summer at various summertime activities including the Dodge County Fair. Finally, the climate survey that I have been telling you about is almost ready to be sent out. I will be sending via for those that have addresses, and USPS for those that do not. I look forward to reading and sharing the results with you all late summer or early fall. Enjoy the beautiful Wisconsin Summer! Pattie Carroll An EEO/Affirmative Action Employer, University of Wisconsin-Extension provides equal opportunities in employment and programming, including Title IX and ADA requirements. If you need an interpreter, materials in alternate formats or other accommodations to access this program. or activity, please contact the Dodge County UW-Extension Office at as soon as possible preceding the scheduled event so that proper arrangements can be made in a timely fashion.

4 Reflections July-August-September 2016 Page 4 Klub Korner Indian Garden March The Indian Garden Club enjoyed the Easy Breads and Rolls project, with each member bringing bread or rolls from the project booklet, and served with corn chowder by hostess, Sandy. New member is Barb Duxstad. We decided to donate Craft Treasurers, completed craft items in a basket, to the quilt raffle. Members are collecting coupons for the Military and making Alzheimer autism muffs for the County Community Services Projects. April The Indian Garden Club enjoyed an early supper at Village Garden Restaurant in Juneau and then went as a club to the lesson Meet Alice in Dairyland. Teyanna Loether, the 69th Alice, gave an interesting and informative talk. Our club is collecting coupons for the Military and is planning our club trip. May The Indian Garden Club is planning a June trip to Madison. Members are collecting coupons for the Military, attended Spring Council and Focus on Women. We are working on our Basket for the Raffle and are checking into interest for a new club. Money was collected for the Bakeless Bake Sale. Members were shown how to make Dryer Balls. Some members made and showed Alzheimer Muffs they made and will distribute. Submitted by Lorraine Kohn Mother Hubbards March Our club was treated to a delicious corned beef and veggies dinner. We also had swirl bread, artisan bread, pecan rolls and sour cream twists for dessert (from the Breads learning project). April Members came up with ideas for projects for next year. May We donated money to the Mayville Food Pantry. Submitted by LaVerne Schultz Emerald Clovers Emerald Clovers planned and organized the Spring Amish Tour for Dodge County HCE members, family and friends. Fifty four participants enjoyed the educational day with stops and talks by the owners at Pleasant View Bakery, Lilac Furniture Gallery, Mishlers County Store, Salemville Cheese, A and E Foods/Grandma s Candy, Grand River Greenhaus, and Susie s Quilts. Participants enjoyed lunch made and served in an Amish Home. Emerald Clovers had two service project work meetings in which no-sew blankets were made for Reformation Lutheran Church in Milwaukee. Members learned how they can get more involved in the Habitat for Humanity Build in Juneau by attending an informational session on this valuable project. Emerald Clover members are collecting coupons for the Military Project with the American Legion Auxiliary 146 in Beaver Dam and made a monetary contribution to help with the postage cost of mailing the coupons. Members are also involved in making the Twiddle Muffs for various nursing homes and facilities. The club had a planning session to select topics for programs for the next four meetings. Submitted by Sally Schoenike There were no other HCE Center submissions with club minutes for this newsletter edition.

5 Reflections July-August-September 2016 Page 5 Twiddle Muffs A Twiddle muff is a double thickness hand muff with bits and bobs attached inside and out. It is designed to provide a stimulation activity for restless hands for patients suffering from dementia. These twiddle muffs provide an engaging entertaining way to occupy the hands. They also help keep patient s hands warm. The twiddle muffs can be knit or crocheted and have lots of fun things (buttons, beads and so forth). There have been several requests from nursing homes for this item. If you would like to learn more about them, please contact Iris Steffen at or iriselaine31@gmail.com. Emerald Clover members encourages HCE members to get involved with this project. Let s Make Music: This year, the people s choice judging for the Cultural Arts bonus category Let s Make Music took place at the county HCE summer picnic on Thursday, June 9 th. Of the two musical-themed creations brought to the picnic, the music box made by Jean Milroy received one more vote than did Sharon Greenwald s shadow box. Jean s musical creation will be taken to the WAHCE Conference in September where it will be placed on display for another people s choice vote by conference attendees. WAHCE Conference: All Dodge County HCE members are invited to attend the annual state conference at the Plaza Hotel in Eau Claire on September 12 14, Registration information and workshop descriptions can be found in the May issue of Update and on the WAHCE website ( Registration deadline is August 13th. 7 Reflections July-August-September 2016 Page 7 As of May 30, 2016 I have totaled $21, in coupons. Please remember not to include restaurant coupons or coupons redeemable only at specific department stores. Each coupon must be cut apart. There is no need to separate categories. That is done when they reach the military bases abroad. Keep track of the time you spend clipping as I will also keep track of the time I use adding them up. I'm hoping almost every HCE member will hand in clipped coupons at least once. You may drop them off at my house if you make a trip through Juneau. This is a simple project that almost every HCE member can do. Clipping coupons can strengthen your fingers and make them fight off arthritis. I will writing a report for "Service of Love" which is due Aug. 1. I hope we even bigger totals to report for June and July. Submitted by Marianne Zastrow We have completed another successful year for Wisconsin Bookworms in a variety of schools in Dodge County. We reached around 100 students in the following Schools: Schurz School, Watertown with Barb Siebel (Country Neighbors HCE) as the volunteer reader; St. John s, Juneau with Marianne Zastrow (Ledgeview HCE) as the volunteer reader; John Hustis, Hustisford with the Socialettes HCE members (Judy Ashby, Anita Back, Camille Brzeczkowski, Caroline Jeffers, Kris Kluewer, Jean Milroy, Shirley Pulkkila, and Alice Roth) as the volunteer readers; St. John s, Fox Lake with Karen Schmidt and Barb Wendler from Emerald Clovers as the volunteer readers; and the Head Start Programs in Beaver Dam with Minda Klug (Individual Member), Iris Steffen and Lynn Stanton from Emerald Clovers as the volunteer readers. Thanks to our very dedicated readers for the time they spent preparing for their visit. The teachers we work with, the students and their families appreciate the efforts of everyone helping make this program possible. If there are any HCE members who would like to get involved in this worthwhile program, please contact Sally at or her at jschoenike@netwurx.net.
