Mini University Miami Valley Hospital Child Care Center and Preschool November Hill Street Dayton, OH (fax) Dear Families, October was a busy month and now we are looking towards celebrating families in the month of November. Please join us for our traditional Thanksgiving Feast this month and family conferences next week. We appreciate your active participation and support of your child s growth and learning. I will also be ing a link in a week or so to complete the NAEYC Family Survey that we do each year about this time. This is a very important process for NAEYC Accreditation that is renewed every 5 years and it also gives me some feedback for continuous improvement for our program. I have attached the USDA recommendation about milk for young children. Beginning this month, we will be following this recommendation children under two years of age will receive whole milk and children over two years will receive 1% milk. If you have any questions, please feel free to speak with me. This newsletter captures some great moments last month. Enjoy reading and learning some new information. If you have recommendations for future newsletter material, please let me know. Thanks so much for your partnership and continued support of our program. Kim Grisez Burlile, Director Get Ready For Fall Conferences ~ November 7th-11th Please make sure you sign up for a conference with your child s teacher. You will find a sing up sheet on their classroom door or you may speak with your child s teacher to make other arrangements if necessary. We really value this time with you to share your child s progress and answer any questions! See you there! Important Dates Family Conferences Thanksgiving Feast 11:30am Thanksgiving CENTER CLOSED Thanksgiving OPEN TO PHP ONLY 7th -11th 22nd 24th 25th Reminders: Please make note of the following dates to plan for your schedules! * We are close 11/24 in observance of Thanksgiving day and open to PHP employees only the day after Thanksgiving, 11/25 * We are closed Dec. 26th and January 2nd in observance of Christmas Day and New Years Day. * We are open to PHP employees only Friday, 4/10/12 for Staff Professional Development Day.

Staff Member of the Month We will begin announcing the Mini U at MVH Staff Member of the Month in the family newsletter! Congratulations to Ms. Stephanie Eckhoff, Purple Room Teacher! Stephanie is one of our newest team members and has done a terrific job getting to know the children, families, and team members. She brings some great experience, being a kindergarten and first grade teacher in the past, and always has a smile on her face. She is a welcomed addition to our Team! Congratulations! Staffing News One of our sister programs needed some assistance and it gave an opportunity for Ms. Brianna. Natalie will be going to the Mini U - Montgomery County program on Wednesdays and Thursdays of each week to give them Education Coordinator support. Ms. Brianna will be providing Ms. Lori support and closing the Front Desk each day from 3:30-6:00pm. We recently hired a preschool closer each day from 3:30-6:00pm. Her name is Michelle Copeland and she will join the Purple Room each day during that time. She is a welcomed addition to our Team and I know preschool families will enjoy her! Congratulations to Brianna, on her dual role Purple Room Assistant Teacher and Front Office Assistant and thank you to Natalie for your flexibility!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Alexis, Allyson, Alyssa, Charlotte, Brihanna, John, Wyatt, Michael, Logan, Ms. Lisa, Ms. Angela, Jenna, and Sophie

Front Office News Piano lessons are available at Mini University for children that are 4 ½ years old and above. *Reminder* NAEYC Family Surveys will be distributed this month! Let Ms. Lori know if yov wovld be interested. The piano teacher will then spend some time with yovr child to see if she feels they are ready to staru. Lessons are $5 for 15 min. or $10 for 30 min.. One Call We will begin using the One Call system this month to help keep families informed of upcoming events and emergencies, if needed. This is a great communication tool between school and families. It is one message that will be sent to all families at the same time. Please make sure we have an accurate phone number that you can be reached at all times. Many people use their cell phone number for this purpose. Stop by the Front Desk and check with Lori to make sure we have the right phone number.

Annual Costume Parade and Staff Costume Contest We had such a great time last Friday during the Costume Parade! Thank you to all of the families who volunteered to help the classes walk over to the Weber Building at MVH. The children and teachers loved having you be a part of this fun event. We look forward to continuing this Mini U MVH tradition for many years to come! Also, congratulations to Ms. Penny (an Owl) for winning 1st place and Ms. Kristie (a bumblebee) for winning 2nd place in our Staff Costume Contest!

Good vs. Bad Sugars for Children Sugar consumption for children is a popular topic of conversation. A recent article from kidshealth.org explained some tips parents can use to monitor their children s sugar intake and help their children make healthy food choices. * Healthy sources of carbohydrates (a.k.a- sugar) include: whole-grain cereals, brown rice, whole-grain bread, fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy. * The 2010 dietary guidelines recommend that Americans eat more unrefined (often called "good") carbs by saying that everyone including kids and teens should increase whole-grain consumption and limit their intake of added sugar. In fact, at least half of grain intake should come from whole grains. One way to cut down on added sugar is to eliminate soda and other sugarsweetened beverages, which can cause erosion of tooth enamel from the acidity and dental cavities (or caries) from the high sugar content. And consider these statistics: * Each 12-ounce (355-milliliter) serving of a carbonated, sweetened soft drink contains the equivalent of 10 teaspoons (49 milliliters) of sugar and 150 calories. Sweetened drinks are the largest source of added sugar in the daily diets of U.S. children. * Consuming one 12-ounce (355-milliliter) sweetened soft drink per day increases a child's risk of obesity. Ensuring that kids get a balanced, nutritious diet isn't as hard as it may seem. Simply make good carbohydrate choices (whole grains, fruits, veggies, and low-fat milk and dairy products), stock your home with healthy choices, limit foods containing added sugar (especially those with little or no nutritional value), and encourage kids to be active every day. Above all, be a good role model. Kids will see your wholesome habits and adopt them, leading to a healthier lifestyle throughout childhood and into adulthood. By Mary L. Gavin, M.D. retrieved from

October Fire Prevention and Safety Day! On Tuesday, October 18th from 9:00-11:00 am we had our Fire and Safety Day event! There were representatives from the Dayton Fire and Police stations with a fire truck, police motorcycles, SWAT truck and police car. We also had Sparky the Fire dog and McGruff! The children had a wonderful time exploring the vehicles, getting baggies full of goodies with information about safety, and learning all about how to be safe around fire! Thank you to everyone who worked to make this event so successful!! Nurses Visit to Preschool Nurses from all areas of the hospital worked together and helped preschoolers see what nurses do. This funfilled morning included books about caring for others and families, songs and a fun art experience. The children were able to be messy with paint and nursing supplies. The children used nursing supplies such as bandages, 2 by 2's, tongue blades, Q-tips, and cotton balls to make a mural. They had a great time as well as the nurses from MVH. Their work was displayed at MVH for all to see!
