2 The summary - Programme advertising leaflet Programme content The MRes in clinical research is designed specifically for healthcare professionals wishing to develop their careers as research practitioners. As such greater emphasis is placed on the development of the necessary skills and competencies needed to be an independent researcher. In recognition of this one third of the Programme is comprised of a 90 credit module of independent research. The MRes in clinical research also provides a vital foundation for doctoral research. The taught components of the programme place emphasis on three key areas of clinical research; research skills, research governance and leadership in the research context. MRes in clinical research at UEL A flexible credit based programme leading towards a higher degree. Mapped to NIHR and Skills for health, nationally recognised competencies in clinical research Emphasis placed on student self-directed learning Focused on research in the clinical environment The option of interim awards at associate, certificate and diploma level for students who do not wish to, or are unable to, complete the programme The flexibility to pay for modules on an individual basis Developed and delivered by experts from a broad spectrum of health disciplines including health promotion, public health, rehabilitation and biomedical science Offers students the opportunity to learning in a mutli-professional environment Entry requirements An undergraduate honours degree in a relevant discipline with a minimum 2.2 classification Professional/regulatory body membership/registration e.g. HCPC, NMC A written application outlining academic and professional background, career objectives and reasons for choosing the programme A minimum of one year post qualification clinical experience. Two supporting references, one of which is preferably academic. Students that apply to enter stages of the programme may be admitted through normal Accreditation of Experiential Learning (AEL) or Accreditation of Certificated Learning (ACL) processes, or through an approved articulation

3 agreement. Therefore such applicants must be able to demonstrate and evidence that they have the required learning outcomes as listed in the modules for which they are seeking exemption. Applicants who meet the requisite entry criteria will be sent details of available research projects. Applicants will also be asked to identify and outline, where appropriate, their own project. Where projects require ethical approval a nominated member of staff from the School will work with you to ensure that the appropriate approval forms are completed prior to the student commencing the programme. Applicants meeting the entry requirements will be called to interview where they will make a presentation of their outline research project proposal/justification of their selected project to an expert panel. Short listed applicants will also be interviewed and their applications assessed against the published entry requirements. In the case of applicants whose first language is not English, then IELTS 6.5 (or equivalent) is required in all components. The programme has 1 intake a year in September. The minimum and maximum registration periods for the programme for full time students is 1 year and 2 years respectively. For part time students the minimum registration period is 2 years and the maximum 4 years. The programme consists of three taught modules and an individual research project/dissertation module equivalent to 90 credits. One core module (essential research skills) is offered by the Graduate School. The other two

4 modules (Clinical Research Master class and Leadership in Clinical Research) are offered by the School of Health Sport and Bioscience. The module offered by the graduate school must be passed before you can register on your dissertation module. All modules are core to the programme. Learning environment You will be supported in your learning by module-based lectures and seminars/workshops. You will also have the opportunity to attend highly specialised research and transferable skills workshops and access high-quality online learning resources. You will be guided through the programme and dissertation by staff with considerable expert practical and teaching experience in the field of research. Your dissertation will be guided also by an expert in your chosen field of study Assessment All module assessment is by end-of-module coursework. Your research project/dissertation is assessed via a 10,000 word dissertation. You will also be required to defend your work in a viva voce examination, of approximately 60 minutes. Students with disabilities and/or particular learning needs should discuss assessments with the Programme Leader to ensure they are able to fully engage with all assessment within the programme. Relevance to work/profession Mapped to NIHR and Skills for Health competencies, the MRes in clinical research has been specifically developed to provide you with the essential knowledge and skills required in order to plan, undertake and manage research in the clinical environment. Your research project dissertation can be devoted to conduct of a research exercise problem in your clinical work setting. Dissertation/project work Your research interests will be discussed during the selection interview, and possible projects will be outlined at this stage. You may already have a

5 project in mind when applying to this programme. If this is the case then we will discuss to possibility of developing your project within your workplace. Your future career The MRes in clinical research prepares you to undertake research in the clinical environment. It also provides a vital foundation for doctoral research. The skills acquired from this programme would place you in a position to develop your role as a clinical researcher. How we support you Students will receive academic support from their individual module leader. The role of the module leader is to monitor the effectiveness of the student s learning during the module for which they are responsible, providing feedback, encouragement and support, and any necessary remedial action. The Programme tutor and module leaders will also advise you about additional learning and support services available in the University. Webbased resources are available to students off campus via the internet. You will be assigned a dissertation supervisor at the start or within the first term of your study. Your research supervisor will provide you with support and additional training (if required) in conducting your research project/dissertation When you first join the programme you will be allocated a personal tutor who is there to help you through your study by offering pastoral and academic support. Your personal tutor can advise you about additional learning and support services available in the University

7 The programme structure Introduction All programmes are credit-rated to help you to understand the amount and level of study that is needed. One credit is equal to 10 hours of directed study time (this includes everything you do e.g. lecture, seminar and private study). Credits are assigned to one of 5 levels: 3 equivalent in standard to GCE 'A' level and is intended to prepare students for year one of an undergraduate degree programme 4 equivalent in standard to the first year of a full-time undergraduate degree programme 5 equivalent in standard to the second year of a full-time undergraduate degree programme 6 equivalent in standard to the third year of a full-time undergraduate degree programme 7 equivalent in standard to a Masters degree Credit rating The overall credit-rating of this programme is 180 credits Typical duration The duration of this programme is one calendar year full-time, and two calendar years part-time. Enrolment is in September It is possible to move from full-time to part-time study and vice-versa to accommodate any external factors such as financial constraints or domestic commitments. Many of our students make use of this flexibility and this may impact on the overall duration of their study period. How the teaching year is divided The teaching year is divided into two terms of roughly equal length. A typical student registered in a full-time attendance mode will study two 30 credit modules per term and a typical student registered in a part-time attendance mode will study one or two modules per term. The advanced independent research module may occur during the spring and summer period.

8 What you will study when The programme has only one intake a year. The programme starts in September (term 1). The teaching year is divided into two terms of roughly equal length. A typical student registered in a full-time attendance mode will study two 30 credit modules per term and a typical student registered in a part-time attendance mode will study one or two modules per term. Registration for the dissertation takes place in the second term of study although preparatory work for it is distributed throughout the programme and its component taught modules. The 90 credit dissertation is completed over two terms (term two and the summer period for full time students). 11 How we assure the quality of this programme Before this programme started Before this programme started, the following was checked: there would be enough qualified staff to teach the programme; adequate resources would be in place; the overall aims and objectives were appropriate; the content of the programme met national benchmark requirements; the programme met any professional/statutory body requirements; the proposal met other internal quality criteria covering a range of issues such as admissions policy, teaching, learning and assessment strategy and student support mechanisms. This is done through a process of programme approval which involves consulting academic experts including some subject specialists from other institutions. How we monitor the quality of this programme The quality of this programme is monitored each year through evaluating: external examiner reports (considering quality and standards); statistical information (considering issues such as the pass rate); student feedback. Drawing on this and other information, programme teams undertake the annual Review and Enhancement Process which is co-ordinated at School level and includes student participation. The process is monitored by the Quality and Standards Committee. Once every six years an in-depth review of the whole subject area is undertaken by a panel that includes at least two external subject specialists. The panel considers documents, looks at student work, speaks to current and former students and speaks to staff before drawing its conclusions. The result is a report highlighting good practice and identifying areas where action is needed. The role of the programme committee This programme has a programme committee comprising all relevant teaching staff, student representatives and others who make a contribution towards the effective operation of the programme (e.g. library/technician staff). The committee has responsibilities for the quality of the programme. It provides input into the operation of the Review and Enhancement Process and proposes changes to improve quality. The programme committee plays a critical role in the quality assurance procedures.

12 The role of external examiners The standard of this programme is monitored by at least one external examiner. External examiners have two primary responsibilities: To ensure the standard of the programme; To ensure that justice is done to individual students. External examiners fulfil these responsibilities in a variety of ways including: Approving exam papers/assignments; Attending assessment boards; Reviewing samples of student work and moderating marks; Ensuring that regulations are followed; Providing feedback through an annual report that enables us to make improvements for the future.
