7 MPLS Overview IETF RFC 4364 (2547bis) Combined wit proposals from Cisco, IBM, and Tosiba circa 1997 MPLS packets can run on oter L2 tecnologies suc as ATM, FR, PPP, Eternet. MPLS allows for te creation of secure policy-based VPNs over a MPLS allows for te creation of secure, policy based VPNs over a variety of underlying networks across multiple carriers.

8 MPLS Benefits and Performance Quality of Service (QoS): Te overall performance of te network supported by SLAs. SLA terms include: Availability, Packet loss, Latency, and Jitter. Class of Service (CoS): Te ability to differentiate and treat packets differently based on importance and time sensitivity Class of Service allows for MPLS users to prioritize different types of data depending on teir requirements and applications. Most carriers offer anywere between 3-6 different levels of CoS. 9 MPLS InterCarrier Interconnects RFC 4364 describes multiple metodologies of connecting autonomous systems. MPLS ICIs (formerly known as NNIs) allow for two carriers to seamlessly expand teir network to provide VPNs in locations were tey do not manage owned facilities. ICIs allow for regional carriers to offer global services to teir customers. Scable, secure, proven metod to expand into a developing region. 11 Putting it Into Practice Multiple Regional Network Providers vs. One Network Provider wit Extended Reac Comparable Costs ICIs require minimal infrastructure investments or expensive backauls. Dealing wit one Carrier instead of multiple Carriers allows for IT to cut down on cycles. Ensure tat One Network Provider as experience wit providing a seamless network solution. Successful ICIs require 2-4 monts of negotiations between Carriers before implementation.
