4 PAGE 4 After Junior College, No Pitfalls for Transfers To State Universities --'.-~ THOMAS V. FERGUSON JR., valedictorian of the class of 1967, is now attending Florida State University. What becomes of graduates of Lake-Sumter Junior College'? They just don't fade away! Consider those who have been awarded associate in arts degrees and transferred to senior colleges and uni ersities. Do they have a difficult time? Not so, occording to a study by Garland Wynn, guidance counselor at L-SJC. Students who do well at I ake Sumter JWlior College also do well at the universities and colleges where they continue their education., he has learned. Mr. Wynn bases his comments on an analysis and survey he made of L SJC transfer stu dents to state universities. The counselor was highly pleased wit h the academic achievement of these students in the winter. ti"inlester of He found that 87.S percent of L-SJC students had no obvious difficulties at the state universities. Only 6.1 percent were placed on probation at the end of the winter term, and 6.1 percent were suspended by the end of the term. These data are based not only on those students who received an associate degree, but those who attended the local junior college for any time at all Information on IrSJC transfer students for whom grade point averages were reported from the fout state background for progress The continued growth of the building program at Lalle-Sumter Jr. College promises to give this community the best in higher learning. We are proud of our part in this program. We have been a part of it since its inception... from plans to plantings. Our job is to insure that these buildings be shown to their best advantage now and in the future... to provide an atmosphere that refleds "quality education" E. HWY
5 E 5 Then What? universities for the winter trimester showed that 84.7 percent, or about five out of six, eamed a 2.0 cumulative grade point average, or better. Fifteen and three-tenths percent of this 8ol.7 percent received a 3.0 cumulative.;p A. or better. The survey included the University ot Florida, Florida State University, University of South Florida, and Florida Atlantic University. Seven or more graduates of L-S.JC have completed their educations and returned to Lake County to teach. These include Phillip Fret well, who has the distinction of being the college's first and only graduate of L-SJC in 1963, at the end of the college's first year of operation. Mr. Fretwell is teaching at Leesburg High School. Others include: Bob Oberholtzer at Carver Heights High School; Beverly Bissell Haskins at Leesburg Junior High School; Mary Thomas, valedictorian graduate of L-SJC, Umatilla School; Tim Hatfield, Umatilla School; Hugh Lindsley, Leesburg High School; Loy Putnam, Beverly Shores Elementary School. Sumter County also has teachers who are graduates of I.-SJC. Throughout this area in responsible positions, also, are many who have completed the two-year business or technology courses. One can find L-SJC graduates among happy and successful citizens throughout Central Florida todav. PHILLIP FRETWELL, first graduate of L.SJC, is presently teaching at Leesburg High School. Secretarial Grads As of September, 1967, 18 students have successfully completed a twoyear secretarial curriculum at Lake Sumter Junior College. Of this number, seven have remained in the Leesburg area, while 11 are employed elsewhere in F:lorida.
