2 Institutional Report History and General Description of York College Since its founding in 1890, York College has been committed to preparing young people for lives of service through a Christian education. The United Brethren Church, with the citizens of York, organized York College, issuing the Articles of Incorporation August 26, 1890, and commencing operation September 1, One hundred forty eight citizens shared in the purchase of the East Hill Campus on the highest ground in the county. The city voted to provide 80 acres and $20,000 for the Main Building and for the maintenance of the College. York College, with UB Church and community support ( ), became a favorably known liberal arts college, although it never obtained accreditation by the North Central Association. The union in 1946 of the UB Church with the Evangelical Church set in motion pressures for merging York College with Westmar College in LeMars, Iowa, which was mandated in In 1956, members of churches of Christ assumed the original corporate structure and obtained ownership of the campus for $1.00. The new administration reopened the doors in September 1956, offering a four year program to a student body numbering 89. After two years, the administration recommended York College focus on the two year program and cease offering the baccalaureate program. York College began work on becoming an accredited junior college with the North Central Association. In 1970, the North Central Association awarded accreditation to York College, the first junior college in Nebraska to receive such a distinction. The College continued growth as a junior college until 1988 when the College began its transition from a two year college to a four year degree granting college. The important first step came in 1989 when the North Central Association granted approval of the first baccalaureate degrees at York College. York College enrolls about 400 students. The College presently offers the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Music, and Bachelor of Science. The Associate in Arts and Sciences is also offered. Overview of the Institution Located in York, Nebraska, York College attracts students from over thirtyfive states and four international countries. Thirty percent of the students come from Nebraska. Generally, fifty percent of the students are members of churches of Christ. York College employs thirty seven faculty, five executive level administrators and approximately twenty one support staff. The faculty are committed to teaching and to the worth of the individual student. York College is committed to remaining a smaller four year institution so that the close, personal relationship between student and faculty can be maintained.

3 Description of the Programs offered by the teacher education unit The implementation of a Teacher Education program at York College began in the fall of The first graduating class of the York College Teacher Education program was in May York College Teacher Education offers degrees in Elementary Education, Middle Grades Education, and Secondary Education. Teacher Education serves approximately 129 undergraduate students. The Education Unit Faculty consists of four full time faculty members. Teacher Education also utilizes five full time York College faculty members within their content areas of expertise. Six part time appointments are made in order to meet a variety of instructional and supervisory needs (including content specific, non pedagogy faculty in Physical Education). York College consists of nine academic departments: Biblical Studies, Behavioral Sciences, Business, Education, English, History, Fine and Performing Arts, Natural Science and Mathematics, and Physical Education. Each department has a designated chairperson as the administrator. Within the Education Unit there are two departments: Teacher Education and Physical Education. Contained within the Education Unit are the Elementary, Middle, Secondary, and P 12 and K 12 programs. The York College Teacher Education Program offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in education (B.A.). The Teacher Education Programs leading to a B.A. are: 1. Adapted Physical Education (P 12) 2. Art (K 12) 3. Basic Business (7 12) 4. Biology (7 12) 5. Coaching (7 12) 6. Elementary (K 8) 7. English (7 12) 8. General Art (K 6) 9. History (7 12) 10.Math (7 12) 11.Middle Grades (4 9) 12.Natural Science (7 12) 13.Physical Education (K 12) 14.Psychology (7 12) 15.Reading and Writing (7 12) 16.Social Science (7 12) 17.Special Education (K 12) 18.Speech and Theatre (7 12) 19.Religious Education (K 12) 20. Vocal Music (K 12)

4 After admission to York College, Teacher Education candidates must be formally admitted to the Teacher Education Program. During EDU 103, Introduction to Education, candidates must sign a notice verifying that they have read the screening procedures for acceptance into the program. During EDU 213 or EDU 232A, Field Experience, candidates will make formal application to the Teacher Education Program. In order to be considered for acceptance to the Teacher Education Program. Candidates must have on file the following: 1. A signed notice of Admission Procedures form 2. A completed Teacher Education Application for Admission form 3. A notarized Felony/Misdemeanor Statement 4. Completed Teacher Education Health Form 5. Documented proof of a minimum of 60 semester hours of credit with a cumulative GPA of or above 6. Documented proof of successful completion (C or above) of each of the following courses: COM 113, EDU 103, ENG 113 and ENG Satisfactory scores on the Pre Professional Skills Test Nebraska Department of Education Rule 20 states that NO student may be permitted to enroll in an approved teacher education program until he/she has achieved satisfactory scores on their Basic Skills Test (PPST). Passing scores The Praxis Series Reading 170 The Praxis Series Math 171 The Praxis Series Writing 172 ***Note: 8. Favorable recommendations from three members of the York College faculty (These recommendations assess reading and writing competencies, people skills, the suitability of a candidate s personality to teaching, his/her moral and personal standards, and other factors deemed important by the faculty members.) 9. Average of 2 or above for the total average of the Freshman and Sophomore Year Electronic Growth Portfolios 10. Average of 2.0 or above, and a successful rating by panel members, on the Candidate Interview (The student shall be responsible for setting up an appointment on the scheduled interview days before a panel of two Teacher Education Council members.) Elementary To register for more than six hours of upper division (300 or 400 level) Education classes, a student must meet the above criteria. Middle Grades, Secondary, and K 12 To register for more than six hours of upper division (300 or 400 level) classes, a student must meet the above criteria.

5 Upon recommendation from the Teacher Education Council, the Education Unit will grant formal acceptance to a candidate who meets all the above requirements. Candidates will be notified in writing of admission or denial to Teacher Education. Any candidate may appeal denial of admittance in writing, first to the Teacher Education Council and secondly to the Division of Education. Candidates may be placed on Program Probation or be dismissed from the program for failure to maintain the standards set forth. Reviews may take place at any time during a candidate s participation in the program. Candidates who are dismissed may be readmitted by appealing in writing, first to the Education Division, and secondly to the Education Division Chair. Each candidate will be assigned an advisor from the Teacher Education Council. Each candidate must maintain GPAs of at least in English, and overall. No course with a grade below "C" (2.00) may be used to satisfy any professional development or teaching field requirement. Our last state accreditation visit was fall 2004 and since then several changes have occurred. New faculty members have come to the Education Unit: o Al Arth comes with experience and exceptional expertise in middle grades education. o Bob DeHart comes with experience and exceptional expertise in both physical education and special education. o Blaine Friesen comes as a retired principal with exceptional expertise in teacher observation and administration. o Roger Rine comes as a retired middle school teacher with exceptional expertise in curriculum and instruction. New office facilities The summer of 2008 brought physical changes to the Unit when a move was made to the second floor of Middlebrook Hall. New endorsement areas o Adapted Physical Education o Social Science New proximity for student teaching Having tried a variety of options for student teaching accessibility, the Unit decided that all student teachers would do their student teaching within 90 miles of York. There is in place an appeal for extenuating circumstances. New protocol for student teaching o An addition to the requirements for student teaching is that all coursework is to be completed prior to student teaching. The rural challenge of providing diverse experiences that will effectively reach all candidates is being more consistently addressed. Separate chapel meetings once a semester for diversity experiences are in effect. Increased student involvement in SEAN with both fall and spring conference attendance. Opportunity for attendance at the Nebraska Reading Conference for candidates.

6 Involvement in Holocaust studies with state, college, faculty, and candidate involvement. The Adapted Physical Education endorsement is new. Updated faculty evaluations Governance has changed as a result of YC administrative decisions. Update interview procedures Communication with community colleges concerning articulation Update interview procedures for entrance into Teacher Education Program 6 Traits Writing Workshop brought to campus every spring for all candidates Future Program Plans A professor for Early Childhood has been actively sought in the recent past with there was no one to be found. However, there is a high demand for Early Childhood from both current students (Elementary Education majors) and prospective students. So, that is still a future possibility. The Education Unit believes, and has data to support, that having a Spanish program with an endorsement would serve the needs of many of our students. We await administrative buy in on that decision. A Master of Arts in Education: Curriculum and Instruction is under construction. The Graduate Committee has administrative sanction to organize a graduate structure and program. It is a work in progress. Technology to connect with the world using Skype to contact people, schools, groups, and other options yet to be explored is coming this summer. Skype will allow contact with schools to ask what they are doing concerning classroom management, teaching strategies, professional development, and other options. York College Admissions Office has worked with community colleges in years past for recruitment. Unit faculty have become involved with Southeast Community College in its Education Academy. This involvement has prompted a concern to communicate with community colleges concerning why their students are in school. Involvement between school/community/families is very important and is something in which Teacher Education would like to increase its involvement. A plan for future work with the community to construct materials for parents concerning their children s education is in progress.
