1 PRESIDENT The Board of Trustees of Arkansas Tech University invites nominations and expressions of interest for the position of President. The position will be available July 1, 2014, upon the retirement of Dr. Robert Brown, whose twenty-one year leadership tenure has transformed the University.

2 The University The main campus of Arkansas Tech University is located in Russellville, the county seat and largest city in Pope County, Arkansas. Nestled in the heart of the Arkansas River Valley, between the Ozark and Ouachita Mountains, it is about 75 miles from Little Rock and very close to beautiful Lake Dardanelle State Park. With a population of 27,920, according to the 2010 Census, it is home to both Arkansas Tech University and Arkansas Nuclear One, Arkansas' only nuclear power plant. Arkansas Tech (originally the Second District Agricultural School) was founded by Act 100 of the 37th Arkansas General Assembly. The act was signed into law by Gov. George Donaghey on April 1, The action created four agricultural schools to be placed around the state. A.K. Short was named the school s first president and construction began on the Main Building on April 21, The first day of classes at the Second District Agricultural School was Oct. 26, The fledgling school had nine faculty members and 186 students. After four presidents in the first eight years, the Second District Agricultural School hired Hugh Critz as president in Critz began transforming the school from a high school curriculum to a college curriculum. By the fall of 1922, the Second District Agricultural School was offering college-level classes. The changing mission of the institution led to a new name for the Russellville campus. Governor Thomas J. Terral signed a bill on Feb. 10, 1925 that changed the name to Arkansas Polytechnic College. Twenty students earned bachelor s degrees from Arkansas Polytechnic College in the spring of 1925, but the four-year curriculum was soon phased out and the campus offered two-year associate degrees until after World War II. High school classes were offered on the campus until One of the most significant events in Tech history occurred in January 1932 when Joseph W. Hull took office as the school s eighth president. Hull served for 35 years and helped usher the campus forward to gain status as a modern college. In May 1948, the Tech Board of Trustees approved a recommendation that Arkansas Polytechnic College should become a four-year, degree-granting institution. The third year of college work was offered for the first time since the 1920s in , and the fourth year of college work was offered in The first four-year college graduating class of the post- World War II era received degrees in May 1950, and the fouryear college program at Arkansas Polytechnic College was accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools in March 1951.

3 In 1976, Arkansas Polytechnic College began offering work toward a master s degree. In accordance with the evolving mission of the College, the name was changed to Arkansas Tech University on July 1, The current President, Dr. Robert Brown, was appointed in July The past two decades have reshaped the campus in many ways. The University has invested more than $250 million in infrastructure, including the construction of leading educational facilities, such as Rothwell Hall and the Ross Pendergraft Library and Technology Center. Overall, Arkansas Tech University offers more than 100 programs of study, including 25 master s degrees, in the Colleges of Applied Sciences, Arts and Humanities, Business, Education, Natural and Health Sciences, Professional Studies and Community Outreach, and the Graduate College. The most popular degrees are business, engineering, education, the physical sciences, and the social sciences. Undergraduate enrollment has grown from 5,855 to over 11,000. Graduate enrollment is expected to top 1,000 this year. Tech's students come from all over Arkansas and the world. As of fall 2012, Tech has the second- highest graduate rate (42.7%) among public universities in Arkansas. Almost 3,000 students reside on campus. Seventy- two percent of the 431 faculty members at the main campus have a doctorate or terminal degree in their field, and more than half are tenured. An additional 26% are on tenure track. With a 21-1 student-to-faculty ratio, students enjoy the mentoring of a committed and highly qualified faculty. Faculty highlights in 2012 include 146 authored or edited published articles, $1.9 million in funded grants, and 166 artistic compositions, performances, and exhibitions. Almost one-third of degrees offered are in the STEM fields. All programs that have an accreditation available have been or are in the process of being accredited, including teacher education, music, nursing, tourism, and emergency management. Tech has accredited programs in electrical and mechanical engineering and an AACSB business program that includes departments in Accounting and Economics and Management and Marketing. The world's first accredited emergency management program was created at Arkansas Tech.

5 The online Accelerated degree Program (Bachelor of Professional Studies), created in 2011, enrolls 1,000 students and has already produced 400 graduates. Arkansas Tech-Ozark campus was added in 2003 and now offers 26 academic programs. The 26-acre campus is located on Highway 23 North. The three most popular programs are business technology, practical nursing, and automotive service technology. The campus hosts Leadership Franklin County, a non-profit organization that serves the residents of Franklin County. Enrollment now tops 2,000 students, a 562% growth since it joined the Arkansas Tech system. Under newly appointed Chancellor Bruce Sikes, the former vocational technical school, established in 1965, has established an educational environment that is responsive to its students and the industries in Franklin County and the region. Vibrant Student Life While academic achievement leading to graduation is the reason for attending Arkansas Tech University, the experiences that students have outside the classroom prove to have a lifelong impact. Experiences offered through Campus Life enhance maturity, leadership, time management, friendship, career development, and civic engagement, along with many other essential life skills. Tech offers more than 100 social and professional organizations for students. The division of Campus Life consists of the following offices: Campus Recreation, Greek Life, Student Activities & Orientation, and Student Life. Arkansas Tech offers a robust Division II athletic program and participates in the Great American Conference, and has been the recipient of the GAC trophy two years in a row. The Ross Pendergraft library and Technology Center opened in 1999, and houses the library, music lab, technology center, and office and board rooms. THE LEADERSHIP AGENDA The next president of Arkansas Tech will inherit a transformed university with a strong foundation and growing reputation. He or she will be expected to continue the momentum established over the last twenty years.

6 Resource generation and management will be a high priority. State funding for Tech has not kept pace with the growing enrollment, and tuition has been kept low in order to provide accessibility to the many first generation students served by the university. Tech is committed to both affordability and high quality, a difficult balancing act in a period of stressed state funding. Experience in enrollment management and new program development, as well as delivery, will be important as Tech strives to maintain its growth trajectory as well as continuation of high quality programs. A dedicated faculty and staff have expressed concern about appropriate staffing levels and workload due to enrollment growth. Strong communication skills, both for external and internal constituency groups, are essential. External audiences, such as the legislature, business partners and donors, must be rallied to provide financial support to ease the reliance on tuition dollars. The higher education landscape in Arkansas is very competitive. There are 11 universities and 22 community colleges in the state. Tech currently ranks in the lowest tier of the university sector in terms of tuition and state support. Political savvy and the ability to communicate the Tech story and mission will be essential. Strategic planning will be needed as Tech ponders a change in role and mission, including the possibility of doctoral programs. The Board of Trustees expects the important role of the Ozark campus to be protected and enhanced during any discussion of mission modification.
