3 Course Introduction In a rapidly changing business world, the demand for finance professionals has never been greater and the role of the accountant is no longer confined to being numerically competent. Today s complex global economy demands that finance professionals are multi-skilled with a strong strategic outlook. They must be ready to influence management decision-making at the highest level. This programme prepares students to be able to meet these challenges and responsibilities. The programme is designed to produce Accounting and Finance graduates who are employable, socially responsible and are able to positively contribute to society. The overall aim of the programme is to enable graduates to make an effective and ethical contribution to the dynamic and fastchanging financial services industry. Students are expected to develop the key skills required to perform to the very best of their abilities. The programme is appropriate for those who wish to pursue a career in industry, commerce, the public sector, or the non-for-profit sector. It provides a useful introduction into the worlds of accountancy practice, commerce, business, industry and finance. The programme is linked to accountancy professional bodies in order to maximize students prospective employability. 3

4 What you will study Level C (Year One) Principles of Financial Accounting This theme develops knowledge and understanding of the underlying principles and concepts relating to financial accounting, technical proficiency in the use of double entry bookkeeping, and the ability to prepare simple financial statements. Principles of Finance This theme provides knowledge of key principles and theories of corporate finance and application of such principles in the analysis and evaluation of business problems. Quantitative Methods This theme provides knowledge about and understanding of quantitative techniques and appropriate statistical software. By the end of the year, students will be able to apply this knowledge in the collection and analysis of data, and the presentation of the related results through the preparation of appropriate reports. Single Honours students will also study: Foundations in Business Management This theme provides knowledge and understanding in areas of business management as well as understanding of the set of actions, or tactics, that a company uses to promote its brand or product in the market. Principles of Economics This theme provides knowledge of the basic economic tools and methods (and their application) in order to approach and comprehend contemporary economic and social issues on a microeconomic and macroeconomic level. Level I (Year Two) Management Accounting This theme develops knowledge and critical understanding of the principles of costing and budgeting as well as the ability to critically apply such principles in the derivation and analysis of costs and budgets in order to support management in planning and decision-making in a variety of business contexts. Intermediate Financial Accounting This theme provides knowledge and skills in understanding and applying international financial reporting standards and the theoretical framework in the preparation of financial statements of entities. It also addresses the analysis and interpretation of financial statements. Explorations in Contemporary Research This theme provides knowledge and understanding of research methodologies and their application in relevant and current accounting and finance academic research. Single Honours students will also study: Corporate and Business Law This theme provides the understanding of and ability of evaluate the relevant rules and principles that comprise the legal framework within which businesses in England and Wales must operate, together with the ability to apply those rules and remedies in order to identify the legal rights, restrictions and remedies available to those engaged in the operation of such businesses (recognizing the desirability of seeking further specialist legal advice where necessary). 4

5 Taxation This theme provides an introduction to knowledge of the tax system, principles of taxations and the application of current UK tax regulation in assessing business tax liability and developing efficient tax strategies. Level H (Year Three) Financial Management This theme provides a systematic understanding of finance aspects such as stock and bond valuation, working capital management, portfolio management and risk management. Advanced Accounting and Accountability This theme provides knowledge about group accounting and critical understanding of ethical issues and implications in accounting and finance. Single Honours students will also study: Auditing and Assurance This theme examines the Assurance engagements, external audit and its regulatory and ethical framework, internal audit and performance management and its relationship with the external audit, role of the Auditor and planning an audit of financial statements, information systems and internal controls, objectives of audit engagements and the application of the International Standards on Auditing, audit planning and the Audit report. Performance Management This theme provides a systematic understanding and application of advanced concepts such as specialist cost and management accounting techniques, performance measurement and control techniques and critical application of contemporary decision making tools available to the management accountant. 5

6 Employability and Career Opportunities Knowledge of accounting and finance principles and the acquisition of management skills are increasingly seen as essential prerequisites by many employers. Graduates will be well prepared for a rewarding career in accountancy, credit control, financial services, investment and profit analysis, purchasing, as a business adviser and other related financial and business professions. A job in Accountancy can help you gain a high salary and succeed in your chosen field, for example as a Chief Financial Officer, Director or Partner in an accounting firm, Forensic Accountant or Business Adviser. You may choose to go on to further study at Liverpool Hope. 9 Graduate Profiles Daniel Hough, BA Accounting, graduated 2012 The Accounting programme at Liverpool Hope University has provided me with a stepping stone to becoming a fully Chartered (Certified) Accountant in the future. Through the integration of career planning and ethical finance within the Accounting course, I have advanced my employability skills and understood the impact of decisions within the financial sector. Overall, this course has provided me with the competitive edge needed, which will be extremely valuable in the future. 9

10 Academic Staff Profiles Dr Federica Salvatori, Lecturer in Accounting and Award Director Dr Federica Salvatori gained her BSc and MSc degrees in Accountancy and Law from the University of Perugia (Italy). After completing the PhD programme in Business Administration in 2011 at the University of Urbino (Italy) and spending a visiting period at DePaul University of Chicago (USA), she started working at the Business School of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (Italy) as a Post Doctoral Researcher. Dr Salvatori has also completed the three year Chartered Accounting training to become a Chartered Accountant in Italy. Dr Salvatori s research mainly focuses on financial accounting as well as on risk management practices both in private and public organisations. She has taught both Financial Accounting and General Business Management to undergraduate students for two years at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. She has also lectured on administrative reforms in the US public sector within an Executive Masters programme organised by the University Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Italy. Dr Tunyi Abongeh, Lecturer in Accountancy and Finance Dr Tunyi Abongeh earned his Master of Finance degree (with Distinction) in International Finance and Financial Institutions and his PhD in Finance and Accounting from the University of Glasgow, Adam Smith Business School. He also holds a BSc (Hons) in Accountancy from the University of Buea, Cameroon and various certificates/diplomas including an Advanced Diploma in Business Administration from the Association of Business Executives (ABE), London. Prior to pursuing a career in Higher Education, Dr. Tunyi worked as a Business Analyst (IT, Finance and Accounting) for Life Technologies Corporation an S&P500 Pharmaceutical company that was later acquired by Thermofisher Inc. Here, he was an analyst in a post-merger integration team that managed Life Tech s acquisition of Geneart (Germany) and LSI (France). In Academia, he has held varying roles, leading and supporting the development and delivery of finance, accounting and business statistics curricula both to undergraduate and postgraduate students across different institutions including the University of Glasgow, the University of Sheffield, Kaplan Higher Education and now, Liverpool Hope University. His current research is in the area of Corporate Restructuring (Mergers & Acquisitions, Bankruptcies and Corporate Spin Offs). Here, he develops models for explaining and predicting such corporate invents, as well as, investment strategies for benefiting from their subsequent occurrence. At Liverpool Hope Business School, Dr. Tunyi teaches a variety of themes such as Principles of Corporate Finance, Financial Management, and Quantitative Methods. 10

11 Professor Archontis L Pantsios, Associate Professor in Economics and Director of Development for curriculum and accreditations Professor Archontis L Pantsios received his BA in Economics and Mathematics from Bates College, and his MA and PhD in Economics from Binghamton University, State University of New York. His PhD Dissertation focused on a comparison of two strike models by employing human capital attributes. He has taught at Middlebury College, Potsdam College of SUNY, the Catholic University of America (USA), Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece) and has held top management positions as Academic Dean and Acting Provost at the American College of Thessaloniki (ACT), Greece, by playing a leading role in International Programmes and US Accreditation. Currently an Associate Professor of Economics and Director of Curriculum Development and Accreditation at LHBS, his research interests lie in the area of the economics of conflict, with specific applications on strike activity, collective bargaining, labour unions and international relations. His published work covers the above areas as well as issues related to the Eurozone architecture. 11
