2 Why study at Winchester? There are many reasons to study at the University of Winchester but the one to consider most is that you will become part of a safe and supportive community. The University is located within walking distance of the city centre of Winchester, which is only one hour away from London by train. The campus is located in a beautiful wooded setting overlooking the South Downs. Our graduates have a strong track record of finding employment after leaving the University. There is a dedicated Careers Service to provide advice and help you research career pathways and employers. They also organise recruitment fairs and workshops on how to write CVs and perform well at interview. We have excellent facilities for learning and teaching that are continually being updated to enhance the student experience. There is a vibrant Student Union, excellent sports facilities, a modern library and IT facilities across the campus. At the University of Winchester we aim to provide campus or University Managed Accommodation to all first year full-time undergraduates who hold Winchester as their firm choice. In addition, we also endeavour to provide students from non-eu countries and students with disabilities a room on campus, not just for their first year, but for the duration of their course. The culture of the University is informal and the emphasis is on you unlocking your potential, developing a clear sense of direction and becoming the best you can be in your chosen career. 2

3 Accounting at Winchester As part of its expanding portfolio of courses, the Winchester Business School has developed a suite of accounting programmes. Accounting has been described as the language of business and this vocational programme has been designed to meet the needs of the accounting profession in the twenty-first century. Accounting is the art of providing information for decision making either for managers within an organisation or for external stakeholders. Modern accountants are also seen as business advisors, providing strategic financial guidance to senior business executives. Every organisation either employs or utilises the services of accountants in order to plan, control and develop their activities, whether in the private, public or not-forprofit sector. As a consequence, accounting and finance degree programmes have an enviable track record of securing graduate level employment for their participants. Programme content Accounting is about the clear communication of financial information in order to make strategic decisions. It requires the production of timely, relevant and accurate information in a form that the user can readily understand. As such, students learn how to produce and communicate accounting information to a variety of users before developing wider strategic skills that utilise the information produced. Work placement There are two opportunities to obtain work placement experience. Before moving on to Year 3 students can choose to spend a year in practice on a paid placement. This is the traditional sandwich year which is non-credit bearing and does not contribute to the degree classification. Alternatively, students can opt for credit bearing professional practice for three months (June-August) or six months (June- December). This experience takes place between Years 2 and 3, is assessed and contributes either 30 credits or 60 credits to the degree classification (depending on length of placement). All work experience placements are subject to the competitive recruitment processes found in the real world including CV writing, application form submission and attendance at interview. Successful students earn competitive salaries in placements approved by Winchester Business School s academic STUDY OPTIONS Accounting and Finance, and Accounting and Management at Winchester are available as Single Honours degrees at undergraduate and Integrated Masters levels. The programmes aim to offer exemptions from the professional examinations of such bodies as: The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland The Chartered Association of Certified Accountants The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants The Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy Single Honours degree programmes focus on one subject. They generally focus around a core of compulsory modules which are added to by a range of optional modules which enable you to tailor your degree towards your own interests. 1

4 Accounting at Winchester faculty and the relevant practical experience gained has been shown to improve the overall performance and employability of graduates. Learning and teaching Learning and teaching takes place in relatively small class sizes, especially for specialist modules. The modules embed information and communication technology into their teaching strategy resulting in an effective use of real world business applications in the classroom. Students are encouraged to learn in small groups and develop soft skills to prepare them to work as part of the management team of an organisation. As well as independent research, students are expected to lead and take part in presentations and debates. Career opportunities Many accounting graduates take up trainee accounting positions with accounting firms or departments, others take advantage of the general business background and relevant skills the programme offers and choose to enter a wide range of business careers. Careers in banking, insurance, financial services and general management are all open to accounting and finance graduates. Accountancy and related careers are particularly well paid, recognising the skills developed as a result of following a relevant degree and professional qualification. Assessment As the accounting programmes attract professional examination exemptions, time constrained exercises feature prominently in the degree alongside other forms of assessment such as presentations, assignments, group work and computerised business simulations. 2

5 BA Accounting and Finance Programme content The programme content is carefully written to offer graduates a range of exemptions from the professional examinations of the main accounting institutes. Winchester s Accounting and Finance graduates therefore have an accelerated route to qualifying as an accountant in practice. This not only helps graduates secure employment, as they are already part-qualified accountants, but it also means that they receive a head start in their professional career. Year 1 In Year 1 students cover the fundamentals of accounting, building their skills in financial and management accounting as well as studying a range of complementary business modules. Level 4 provides a solid preparation to the world of accounting and business, enabling students to specialise in Accounting and Finance or Accounting and Management in Levels 5 and 6. Year 2 In Year 2, more specialised modules are available, building on the skills and knowledge developed in Level 4. At this stage, students start to select courses to maximise the exemptions available from the professional examination syllabus, improving their vocational focus and preparing them for their future career. Year 3 At Year 3, more advanced specialist modules are available, further increasing the professional exemptions for graduates. These modules also prepare students knowledge and understanding of the fundamental principles of corporate governance and sustainable business development, enabling them to develop analytical skills in the use of accounting and financial data. Year 4 Year 4 represents the Integrated Masters year and aims to develop students critical understanding of current issues in accounting, finance and management. Informed by research and practice students advance their skills of synthesis, analysis, critical enquiry and independent research in the areas of responsible management, financial strategy and corporate governance, financial analysis and valuation and investment and behavioural finance. The programme ensures that students obtain the level of knowledge and skills that enable a critical and balanced overview of accounting and finance which is both intellectually stimulating and vocationally relevant. FACT FILE Typical offer: points* Single Honours Additional entry requirements: A GCSE A*-C in Mathematics is required If English is not your first language: IELTS 6.0 (including 6.0 in academic writing) or equivalent. * Entry requirements correct at time of print. 8 BA Accounting and Management Year 2 In Year 2, more specialised modules are available, building on the skills and knowledge developed in Level 4. At this stage, students start to select courses to maximise the exemptions available from the professional examination syllabus, improving their vocational focus and preparing them for their future career. Year 3 At Year 3, more advanced specialist modules are available, further increasing the professional exemptions for graduates. These modules encourage a systematic and critical approach to the identification, analysis and solution of problems by using the concepts of accounting and management, as well as developing an awareness of the inter-relationships between accounting and management and certain other academic disciplines.
