3 Course Introduction Business organisations are facing unprecedented change and complex challenges both within the UK and globally. This demands that students who enter the business sector understand the dynamics of the business environment and how organisations operate in increasingly uncertain situations. The Business Management programme at Liverpool Hope University examines organisations from small to medium-sized enterprises to global companies public, private, not-for-profit with a focus on business principles, organisational dynamics and management processes. As a Business Management student, you will analyse global business issues, human resource management and development and social and cultural change. This in-depth programme gives you the opportunity to understand how businesses operate and the ethical and social impact they have on communities and individuals. The Liverpool Hope Business Management programme provides the topic areas described below and covers the nature and the purpose of general business and management programmes as defined by the Quality Assurance Agency s (QAA) benchmark statement (2006) for Business and Management: Study of organisations, their management and the changing external environment in which they operate Preparation for and development of a career in business and management Enhancement of lifelong learning skills and personal development to contribute to society at large. 4 What you will study The unique study model on our Business Management degree programmes is founded on scenario-based learning (SBL), which means that we regularly bring the business, industry and academic worlds together. At each level you will study an integrated curriculum in Business Management that generally includes: Level C (Year One) Organisational Behaviour and Human Resource Management Project and Operations Management Marketing Global Business Ethics and Society Economics (Micro) and Finance Developing Professional Skills Industry Field Visits Management Information Systems Additional, Single Honours Further aspects of each of the above, plus: Economics (Macro) and Society Level I (Year Two) Further aspects of each of the above, plus: Entrepreneurship, Business Modelling and Practical Business Development (through Young Enterprise) Economics (Macro) Additional, Single Honours Further aspects of each of the above, plus: Globalisation and CSR Business Law Leadership and Management Development The embedding of Young Enterprise within Level I of our programmes means that you will gain experience of setting-up, running and developing your own business, with the opportunity of being selected for regional and national Dragons Den style pitching and awards events. Level H (Year Three) Further aspects of each of the above, plus: Introduction to strategic choices Developments in the third sectors The additional Single Honours curriculum explores: Research Dissertation or Consultancy Report on a negotiated topic. 4

6 Employability and Career Opportunities The overall approach for delivering the Business Management programme is to collapse the distance between the classroom and the shop-floor/office as much as possible. You will be constantly presented with situations which require you to apply your studies to the world of contemporary business, problem-solving, interpreting and raising questions about the way in which business operates. Our Business Management programme is designed to prepare our graduates for a career in any aspect of management and business, equipped to set up their own business or to work as business advisors. You will have developed skills such as problem-solving, critical analysis, teamwork, giving presentations, report writing and reflective practice, all of which are demanded by top employers. The Business Management degree also prepares you well should you wish to pursue postgraduate study (taught and research) in Business. 9 Graduate Profiles Nayana Gopi Tharoor, Business with Marketing graduate I moved to Dubai after graduation in search of a steady start. With a strong academic backing, I soon found myself placed as a Marketing Executive for the brand Johnnie Walker at African and Eastern, which is the largest importer and distributor of the world s most popular alcohol brands in the Middle East and Arabian Gulf. It is never a cake walk in the corporate world especially when you are a fresher. However the numerous services and short hand seminars that were held at Hope, honing important personality development traits guided me to deal with those sticky situations at work: like your reaction to criticism, diplomacy at handling work situations, corporate ethics, managing your managers and many more. This helped me wade through the pressures/politics at work and soon I was given the responsibility of working with other great brands and bigger projects within the organisation. After a year and half of a glamorous stint at African and Eastern I decided to take my next big career leap. I was hired as the Senior Marketing Executive for the brand Columbia, The North Face and VANS at Sun and Sand Sports the leading sports retailer and wholesaler in the Middle East. Even today I read through my journal articles that I had access to when I was at Hope before planning a brand campaign. It is very important for a student to have a strong foundation before progression in his/her career. Hope builds that foundation for you and makes you realise that the sky is the limit. 9

10 Academic Staff Profiles Donna Harper, Senior Lecturer Donna Harper is a Senior Lecturer and has previously owned and managed businesses in the retail and leisure sectors. An MBA graduate, she is also a qualified Pharmacist and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She currently teaches at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels: Global Business Ethics, Business Ethics and Social Entrepreneurship. Her research interest is Business Responsibility - with a focus on Small and Medium Sized Enterprises. Ilva Navarro Bateman, Senior Lecturer Ilva Navarro Bateman is a Senior Lecturer and Business Management Major Co-ordinator. Before joining Liverpool Hope, she worked for many years in the cement industry. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She currently teaches Globalisation, International Business and Business Environments. Her main research interest is cross-cultural management, with a focus on Latin America. Tony Bradley (Revd), Professional Tutor Tony Bradley (Revd) is University Professional Tutor in Social Entrepreneurship, Associate Director of SEED (Social and Ethical Enterprise Development), and Level I CORE Co-ordinator. He has worked as the Deputy MD of a leading TV production company and set up five social enterprises. He also served in Anglican parish and Diocesan ministry for 20 years before coming to Liverpool Hope. Prior to that he was Senior Lecturer in Social Policy at Anglia-Ruskin University. He is Project Lead for a range of social enterprise and community development initiatives in Liverpool, where he was born and raised. His research focus is on mapping the political sociology of ethical enterprise and societal entrepreneurship in the inner city. He is a member of both the Chartered Management Institute and Institute of Enterprise and Entrepreneurship. 10

11 Dr Valeria Andreoni, Lecturer After completing her PhD Valeria spent one year working for the Euro- Mediterranean Centre on Climate Change on water availability and security in the Mediterranean. Her activities focused on macroeconomic analysis on virtual water and virtual water trade. Before moving to the Business School at Liverpool Hope University she worked for almost three years at the Joint Research Centre European Commission at the Institute of Prospective Technological Studies in Seville (Spain). Dr Asad Ghalib, Lecturer Dr Ghalib has been associated with a number of institutes and organisations around the world in the academic, development, research, not-for-profit, financial and banking services industry. His expertise lies in various models related to household index-based ranking and gauging the socio-economic impact of social protection models. He was elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA) in 2013 for his services and commitment to the field of international development. Dr Curtis Ziniel, Lecturer Dr Ziniel earned his PhD from the University of California, Riverside in He moved to Liverpool and began teaching at Hope in He has teaching experience in research methods, communication, politics, education, and business. His teaching at Liverpool Hope Business School is focused on research methods for both undergraduates and postgraduates. Dr Juneho Um, Lecturer Dr Um was awarded a PhD in Management Studies (Operations and Supply Chain Management) from the University of Liverpool. He has experience in teaching, conducting training programs and undertaking consultancy projects in the private and public sectors. He has also previously worked as a member of the business strategy team in the broadcasting industry for two years. 11
