4 SECONDARY TEACHING BE PREPARED TO INFLUENCE WHY STUDY SECONDARY EDUCATION AT AVONDALE? Avondale teaching graduates have a reputation for being some of the most capable teachers in Australia. In 2011, 90 percent of students were offered a full-time teaching position straight after graduation. Unlike any other higher education institution in Australia, you will engage in practical classroom experience in your first semester. You will also be given the opportunity to travel overseas and gain teaching experience in a developing country such as India, Cambodia or Nepal. Avondale is committed to giving you regular opportunities to apply your learned theory in a practical setting. Avondale s bachelor degrees in secondary teaching will prepare you to change the world and transform student s lives through teaching and mentoring. 5 BACHELOR OF ARTS/BACHELOR OF TEACHING (BA/BTCH) Details CRICOS code: Degree Type: Locations Offered: Study Mode: Course Duration: E Undergraduate Lake Macquarie Campus On campus Four years full-time (or part-time equivalent) Overview Avondale s Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Teaching is an integrated combined degree program that will give you the ability to teach in at least two secondary-level curriculum areas whilst also providing in-depth knowledge in one or more fields of study within the arts. Entry Requirements DIRECT ENTRY: ATAR of (or equivalent e.g. OP of 17 or less) Mathematics (major/minor) Recent HSC Mathematics Extension 1 (or equivalent), or recommendation of the Faculty of Science and Mathematics Music (major/minor) See for music entry requirements ALTERNATE ENTRY If your ATAR is below 3.00 (or equivalent), you may still be able to gain entry into this degree on a conditional basis. Previous work experience and educational qualifications will also be considered upon application. 6 In addition to education-related careers, teachers often find careers in the corporate world where organisational and relationship skills are valued by employers. Textbook and Other Costs You can expect to spend approximately AUD$50 to $350 on textbooks, lecture notes and excursions per semester. Some textbooks are available to borrow from Avondale s library. Field Study - Geography and Biology Minors Avondale is well positioned for the study of geography and field biology, situated within a few kilometres of coastal sand dunes, mangroves, coastal lakes, fresh water aquatic environments and warm temperate forests. Frequent trips are taken to areas of geographical and biological interest, including interstate excursions. Scholarships COURSE SPECIFIC SCHOLARSHIP ARTS & EDUCATION Avondale offers a number of arts and education scholarships to new students from Australia and New Zealand who have a passion for their chosen course and a desire to study at Avondale. For specific details regarding these scholarships, visit ASA Regional Education Scholarship A limited number of regional education scholarships worth $5,000 per annum for three years are available to selected Avondale Education and Teaching students. Emphasis in allocation of regional scholarships will be given to students willing to teach in Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania, Mildura (Victoria), Bundaberg (Queensland) and Northern Queensland. 7 Course Structure The BA/BTch is composed of 32 units (192 credit points) of study over eight semesters, combining studies in education with studies in teaching field disciplines from the BA degree. The BA strand contributes 90 credit points to the combined degree, while the BTch strand is 102 credit points. All units are worth six credit points (unless otherwise specified). If you want to study Chaplaincy within a BA/BTch degree, it is recommended that you enrol in a Chaplaincy specialisation. Title of Course of Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Teaching Study Course structure: The course structure is based on eight semesters (each of 13 weeks in duration), with four units taught in each semester. It comprises: 3 x Required Christian Studies for Teachers x Experience 4 x Curriculum Studies 4 x Specialist Education AND 8 x to make up a major 4 x to make up a minor 3 x Electives OR 11 x to make up a specialisation (By combining major and three electives in one key learning area) 4 x to make up a minor Teaching areas include: Ancient History, Biology, Business Studies, Chemistry, Computing Technology - Information Systems, Design and Technology, English, Food Technology, Geography, Industrial Technology, Legal Studies, Mathematics, Modern History, Music, PDHPE, Physics, Studies of Religion, Textiles Technology, Visual Arts. Note: Minors from other degrees may be available, subject to timetable constraints and with the approval of the Course Convenor of the Bachelor of Teaching and the Course Convenor of the Bachelor of Arts. Component Christian Studies for Teachers Experience Description These subjects are central to the Christian Ethos of the institution and explores Christian foundations in biblical literature, assists students to examine their current world view and explores issues in relationship to Business, Education and Christian faith. These subjects prepare pre-service teachers to teach in a secondary classroom. Typically these subjects are linked to a professional teaching experience and are designed to provide continual professional growth over the duration of the course of study. Within a Quality Teaching framework these subjects focus specifically on topics such as; classroom management, preparation, assessment, duty of care, student welfare, motivation, and effective communication. 7 P a g e

8 Curriculum Studies Specialist Education Major Minor Elective These subjects provide pre-service teachers with the opportunity to apply quality-teaching principles to specific teaching areas. Current practicing teachers are employed in all key learning areas to provide specific pedagogical training for different subject areas. Literacy education, classroom safety, curriculum development and teaching strategies are dealt with specifically for the chosen teaching areas. Student complete four subjects that cover a range of current educational topics. include; Language and Literacy, Students with Special Educational Needs, Multicultural Education and Indigenous Studies, Learning and ICT. 9 Honours The honours option allows you to complete a program in research methodology and conduct your own research under supervision. This program enhances the opportunities for high-achieving students to influence professional practice through research, and facilitates access for students to proceed to research-based studies at masters or doctorate level. 20 Course Structure The BBus/BTch is composed of 32 units (192 credit points) of study over eight semesters, combining studies in education with studies from the Business Degree. The BBus strand contributes 90 credit points to the combined degree, while the BTch strand is 102 credit points. All units are worth six credit points (unless otherwise specified). TEACHING FIELDS Regardless of which majors you choose within the BBus/BTch, all graduates will be qualified to teach Business Studies and Commerce.
