4 Course Information and Structure Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) The Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) provides students with the necessary knowledge and skills to enable graduates to progress to postgraduate training in psychology or the liberal arts. The Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) will offer potential employment in a broad range of areas including counselling, human services, child welfare and community work. The Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) is recognised by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) as an accredited three-year undergraduate sequence in Psychology. Psychology (APAC Accredited) for students commencing 2014 and later The 14 APAC Accredited Psychology units are undertaken throughout the course. A Minor is a total of 40cp from prescribed units in one discipline or approved interdisciplinary area, normally including at least 10cp at introductory level and at least 20cp at advanced level. Applying for Credit If you are applying for credit for previous studies or recognition of prior learning, it is essential that you submit your CR: Application for Credit form (with necessary documentation attached) to the School of Arts and Sciences Office at the earliest opportunity. For further advice regarding credit, please consult with your Course Coordinator. Students who have transferred from other degrees If you have transferred into the Bachelor of Arts from another course, or through Dual-to-Single Degree transfer, you will need to consult with the Bachelor of Arts Course Coordinator or Advisor on what may be counted in this degree, and what you will need to enrol in. You may need to have an out-of-phase course plan drawn up for you. Mid-year Commencement If you have commenced studies in the Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) mid-year you will need to consult with the Course Coordinator or Advisor for course planning advice. 6 sequenced and have pre-requisites so you will need to enrol in appropriate units after seeking advice. Honours Students with strong academic records are encouraged to apply for Honours at the end of their third year. The School of Psychology will run an information session each year and students apply on-line. You can talk to lecturers or your course coordinator/advisor to find out more about honours. Standard full-time enrolment load per semester The standard full time enrolment load per semester is four (4) units. Students are still considered to be enrolled on a full time basis if they are enrolled in at least 75% of the standard full time enrolment load. Students are strongly advised not to exceed enrolment in 4 units per semester, and should consult with their course coordinator if they wish to enrol in additional units. Electives Individual units undertaken other than those required for the selected majors or minors. These are listed in the Schedule of Unit Offerings or from other disciplines within the Faculty (subject to availability, unit limitations and provided that prerequisite and co-requisite requirements are met). Core Curriculum (Applicable only for students enrolled 2013 onwards) The Australian Catholic University Core Curriculum has been designed to focus on aspects of the University s identity and mission. The units emphasise critical judgment, clear expression, ethical decision-making and concern for others, as individuals and as a community. The Core is comprised of a total of five units: University Core units: All students in the Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) program are required to complete the following University Core units as part of this program: UNCC100 Our World, Community and Vulnerability UNCC300 Understanding Self and Society: Contemporary Perspectives a) UNCC units are often taught over differing week patterns to allow for student placements at various times during semester. Students should take special care to note the week pattern of tutorials when they allocate in Tutorial Direct to ensure that they are choosing the correct stream for this course. b) Please consult with your Course Coordinator if any of the following applies to you: You need to repeat a UNCC unit due to a previous fail grade You are unable to complete a UNCC unit during the standard semester in which it is offered You plan to enrol in an advertised international option specific to the Core For more information on Core Curriculum please refer to Information last updated on 20 March 2015 Page 6

7 HUMA247 Learning in the Community The Learning in the Community unit supports the development of student awareness of social responsibility to the wider community. Graduates should be persons whose moral development is mature and who are professionally competent, and able to make significant contributions to the profession and the wider community. This unit enables students to contribute to community service in tangible ways that support ethical, spiritual and personal development. Program Core unit Program Core units are designated units that make up part of the Core Curriculum in Undergraduate courses. At some stage in their degree, all students in the Bachelor of Arts program are required to complete at least two Program Core units, the list below contains those units being offered in 2015: Semester 1 Semester 2 ARTS324 (Pre: 40cp in Visual Arts units) PHIL102 LEGL103 SOCS209 (Pre: 10 cp from 100-level unit in Sociology or Australian ) ECON204 (Pre: 1 ECON unit at 100 level) GEOG204 PHIL104 THCT100 Important Note: If you wish to undertake a placement with a community organisation where you will be working directly with young or vulnerable people, you will need to obtain a Working with Children Check, and/or Police Check. Further information on applying for Working with Children Checks and/or Police Checks is available from the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Learning and Teaching website As these can take some time to arrange, it is suggested that you submit your application at least six months before commencement of your placement. Course Structure: Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) (students commenced 2014 or later) A student may complete a Specialisation in Psychology in accordance with the following requirements from the Schedule of Unit Offerings: a. 140 cp from Specified Psychology Units including the program core unit PSYC313 Social Psychology; b. 10 cp from COUN106 Introduction to Counselling and Micro Skills; c. 60 cp from an Arts Minor and Electives (other than Psychology) including one Arts program core unit; d. 20 cp from University Core Units; e. 10 cp from HUMA247 1 Learning in the Community; * Note that the Program Core Units must be taken as part of a student s minor or as an elective and the number of electives can therefore range from 0 cp to 20 cp Information last updated on 20 March 2015 Page 7

13 IMPORTANT NOTE FOR STUDENTS WHO COMMENCED STUDIES IN 2012 Please consult your course coordinator for advice on 2015 enrolment Students who have not yet enrolled in a Learning in the Community unit should enrol in HUMA247. Students who have enrolled in ARTS232 should consult course coordinator or course advisor. Students who commenced their studies in 2012 will complete the 10 cp unit HUMA247 Learning in the Community instead of the 0 cp unit ARTS232 Learning in the Community. Students undertaking HUMA247 Learning in the Community will not complete more than 50 cp from Electives. Arts Units Offered in 2015 The School of Psychology reserves the right not to run units that do not attract sufficient enrolment numbers.
