5 Lauren Burt Doctor of Philosophy Lauren s enthusiasm for her Bachelor of Exercise Science (Honours) research encouraged her to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy. Her research quantifies impacts during floor and beam training in girls from two streams of participation in artistic gymnastics. Debate has continued for many years as to whether or not participation in elite level gymnastics during childhood and adolescence adversely affects the physical growth and maturation of individuals, said Lauren who is also a University medal winner. Vanessa Carter Master of Education (Literacy) Vanessa s decision to undertake a Master of Education (Literacy) was based on her love of literacy and the knowledge that she would be working with her mentors. My specialisation of literacy involved completing a major research project where we were required to develop and answer a research question. I investigated if interactive whiteboards could be successfully integrated into the kindergarten literacy classroom, said Vanessa. Knowing that I can carry out an action-based research study to a very high level is one of the most rewarding aspects of my course. I look forward to having my own class where l can put into practice all that l have been learning and studying for the past six years. Elise Hammond Master of Teaching (Primary) Having completed a Bachelor of Applied Science, Elise decided to follow her passion for teaching children, commencing a Master of Teaching (Primary). The practical teaching was very rewarding; being in the classroom and implementing lessons of my own was fantastic. The completion of a major research project on teachers perspectives of ADHD students in the classroom and how to manage them was also very rewarding, said Elise. Andrew Lavin Doctor of Philosophy Melbourne-based sociologist Andrew Lavin has studied public health, genetics and sociology and is now completing a Doctor of Philosophy in social and behavioural sciences at ACU National. He is collaborating with the Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society at LaTrobe University to write youth-friendly qualitative research reports. Daniel Lowrey Graduate Diploma in Applied Exercise Sciences (Exercise Prescription) Daniel who is currently undertaking the Graduate Diploma in Applied Exercise Science has started helping out in the North Melbourne Football Club gym as a volunteer. Once I began working with some of the players, I developed a lot of ideas as to how they could better protect themselves against injury. I approached one of the coaches about my ideas and he offered me a job, said Daniel. The School of Exercise Science works closely with elite athletes and offers industry experience and a personalised learning environment. You can ask questions and you re not treated like another number, he said. Mark Pangilinan Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary)/Graduate Certificate in Religious Education Mark holds a combined Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary) and Graduate Certificate in Religious Education. He was offered a full-time teaching position at Holy Spirit College in Lakemba, even before he had finished his final exams. Although the subjects required a lot of commitment, I felt they were all relevant in different ways to prepare me for the teaching profession, said Mark who majored in mathematics, information and communication technology and religious education. I aspire to keep teaching well and to make a significant contribution to education in Catholic Schools. 3

With six campuses in Brisbane, North Sydney, Strathfield, Canberra, Ballarat and Melbourne, ACU National is in an ideal position to partner with other institutions. ARC Discovery and Linkage Grants and strong partnerships with other universities have assisted ACU National in bringing social responsibility to the research agenda in such areas as: Master of Education (Research) (MEd Research) Brisbane + Strathfield + Canberra + Ballarat + Melbourne 2 years full-time or equivalent part-time Master of Exercise Science (MExSci) Strathfield + Melbourne 2 years full-time or equivalent part-time Master of Nursing (MNR) Brisbane + North Sydney + Canberra + Ballarat + Melbourne 2 years full-time or equivalent part-time Master of Midwifery (MMidR) Brisbane + Melbourne 2 years full-time or equivalent part-time Master of Psychology/Doctor of Philosphy (PhD/MPsych) Brisbane + Melbourne 4 years full-time or equivalent part-time Promoting and connecting mathematics and science in middle-years schooling Key ideas from mathematics and science form the basis of essential knowledge for future citizenship. The difficulties students encounter learning these ideas are well documented and have led to calls for new approaches to curriculum, teaching method and assessment. It is in the middle years of schooling that essential ideas become clear and readily observable in the mathematics and science curriculum. The challenge for teachers is to connect these essential ideas to students. This project, facilitated by ACU National s Professor Doug Clarke and researchers from the University of Queensland, brings middleyears mathematics and science teachers together to provide an opportunity for them to explore the common core themes of mathematics and science and to reflect upon their classroom practice and the learning outcomes of their students. Capacity building for rural and remote Indigenous students numeracy outcomes Rural and remote Indigenous students perform well below other students in statewide numeracy tests. Because teachers are generally non-indigenous, inexperienced and stay for less that two years and Indigenous teacher aides have little training in teaching mathematics, schools do not have the capacity to affect this outcome. This project, facilitated by ACU National s Professor Elizabeth Warren and researchers from Queensland University of Technology, is working with schools to improve and sustain Years 1 7 mathematics outcomes by enhancing aides tutoring effectiveness through culturally appropriate mathematics. The aim is to develop principles for a professional learning program that can be used with Indigenous aides across Australia to improve Indigenous students mathematics and therefore employment and life chances. 43
46 postgraduate research Influences on student learning goals and self-regulation capacities There is a widely held view that many students in the middle years of secondary school are disengaged from school and education (e.g. Hill, Holmes-Smith, & Rowe, 1993; Russell, Mackay, & Jane 2003). This ARC Linkage project, comprising researchers from ACU National, Monash University and La Trobe University, seeks to identify key factors that influence student learning and engagement in these school years and to evaluate teaching interventions that improve engagement, learning and achievement. The project tests the proposition that a crucial element in engaging middle-year students is to promote their capacity at self-regulation of their learning. ACU National s Ms Andrea McDonough and Dr Caroline Smith and researchers from Monash University have designed teacher interventions to connect school experience with students perceived futures, and to enhance students self-regulation of their learning. Community capacity building for child protection This ARC Linkage project, comprising ACU National s Associate Professor Morag McArthur and Dr Gail Winkworth and researchers from the Australian National University and the University of Queensland seeks to increase the capability of parents affected by drug and alcohol misuse to improve the life chances of young children. Over half the children reported to child protection authorities in Australia are affected by parental substance misuse, often linked to mental health, family violence and social isolation. The research uses a matrix of parenting capacity and connectednesses to test and extend knowledge of inter-sectoral collaboration to improve children s lives. A workforce strategy to develop the capacity of drug and alcohol child protection and other services to work more collaboratively will be a key outcome. Health care reform for nurse practitioners and workforce design Development of the nurse practitioner role is an excellent example of evolution in healthcare. 1 The nurse practitioner or midwifery practitioner (hereafter NP) is now an established and legitimised entity of health service delivery in six Australian jurisdictions, with the remaining in process of legislative change. Credible research currently being undertaken by ACU National s Professor Sandy Middleton and researchers from Queensland University of Technology is urgently needed to realise the potential of NPs in Australia and to bridge the divide of inequitable distribution of health services. 2 The research team is undertaking a comprehensive analysis of Australian nurse practitioner service delivery patterns, scope of practice and patient outcomes. This information is crucial to inform workforce redesign and healthcare policy, with the ultimate aim of improving both service delivery and patient outcomes. Poverty and welfare in early Christian times Poverty and welfare are key concerns internationally. ACU National s Professor Pauline Allen, Dr Wendy Mayer and Dr Bronwyn Neil are assessing how society approached these issues in late antiquity to increase our understanding of this critical area. Building on previous ARC-funded research, this project is testing the model of the relationship between poverty and leadership at a time of social change proposed by the influential Peter Brown (2002) by focusing on three pivotal figures in a defined period across a significant geographic spread: John Chrysostom (Byzantium), Augustine (North Africa), and Leo I (Italy). Interrelationships between child, nation, race and Empire The child-nation-race-empire grant, led by ACU National s Professors Shurlee Swain and Margot Hillel oam, is in its final year. It examines the literature produced by and in support of the child rescue movement which emerged in Britain in the second half of the nineteenth century and later spread throughout the Empire. It argues that within such literature neglected and abused children were constructed as victims of their parents rather than of a wider social inequality, justifying the widespread removal that was to have such damaging outcomes in England and beyond. Australian Women s Archive Project The National Foundation for Australian Women established the Australian Women s Archives Project (AWAP) in 2000 to build knowledge and recognition of the contribution made by women to Australia. AWAP is now an important and authoritative resource for information about the roles of women in Australian history. ACU National s Professor Shirlee Swain is working with researchers at the University of Melbourne to record on the Australian Women s Register information about the history of Australian women, growing the archive itself and the software that maintains it. Relevance and social responsibility for Australia s future As demonstrated in these examples of ARC Discovery and Linkage grant projects, ACU National researchers are conducting quality academic research in various disciplines while having regard for perspectives of social justice and personal and societal capacity building. Across a range of disciplines, as well as across contemporary and historical contexts, ACU National has consistently produced research outcomes which are able to inform the development of a socially responsible future for Australia. The University s mission calls for quality research characterised by free inquiry and academic integrity coupled with a fundamental concern for justice and equity and the dignity of all human beings. On this foundation, ACU National is firmly committed to growing its research activity and continuing to make a strong contribution to Australia s research community. 44
