How to use this Guide This Course Enrolment Guide 2013 provides you with information on when and where the units available for study in this program(s) will be offered in Enrolling in units for Read Section 2. Program Information for information on course structure and unit sequence. Take note of any prerequisite or co-requisite requirements before selecting particular units. A prerequisite is a requirement that must be met by a student before enrolment in a stipulated unit. It is your responsibility to ensure that you meet the prerequisites for a unit prior to enrolling into that unit. A co-requisite is a requirement that must be met by having already passed or being concurrently enrolled in an associated unit in order to be able to enrol in the stipulated unit. If you wish to enrol into a unit for which you have not met the prerequisite or corequisite requirements, please obtain approval from your Course Coordinator. 2. Refer to the unit listings in Section 3. Units Offered in 2013 to select your units. Take note of the study period in which units are offered. 3. You must refer to Administration & Enrolment on the ACU website ( for information on how to complete your enrolment via Student Connect. Administration & Enrolment also provides detailed information on managing your studies. 4. Log on to Student Connect and enrol ( Student Connect is a web interface allowing students to complete their ACU enrolment online. IMPORTANT NOTE Failure to enrol or re-enrol before the published due dates for re-enrolment on the ACU website ( may result in late fee penalties. Even if you are unsure of what units you need to enrol in, please ensure that you enrol or re-enrol in at least one unit before the due date. Enrolling in at least one unit by the due date will enable you to add further units, or amend your enrolment via Student Connect up until the final dates published in the Critical Dates for Variation of Enrolment on the ACU website ( Information last updated on 17 April 2013 Page 4

Program Information Bachelor of Arts (Pass) To qualify for the pass degree, a student must complete: 240 cp from the Schedule of Unit Offerings, consisting of: 160 cp from: o 2 Majors; or o 1 Major and 2 Minors; 20 cp from University Core Units 10 cp from HUMA247 Learning in the Community at least 20 cp from Program Core Units* not more than 50 cp from Electives * Note that the Program Core Units may be taken as part of a student s major, minor or as an elective and the number of electives can therefore range from 30 cp to 50 cp What are Majors and Minors? A Major is a total of 80 cp from prescribed units in one discipline or approved interdisciplinary area, normally including at least 10 cp at introductory level and at least 60 cp at advanced level. Business Studies Economics Geography History Literature Mathematics Philosophy Psychology Theological Studies Visual Arts A Minor is a total of 40 cp from prescribed units in one discipline or approved interdisciplinary area, normally including at least 10 cp at introductory level and at least 20 cp at advanced level. Australian Studies Communication Computing Drama You can find a brief description of each major and minor offered as well as additional information on discipline areas later in this guide. You will also find a useful Record of Progress form that will help you monitor your progress through the degree at the end of this guide. Information for Year 1 students Many students are able to make decisions about which disciplines they will continue with as majors and minors in their first semester. However, for most discipline areas, there is flexibility within the Bachelor of Arts to change your intended major or minor after the first year of study. Any discipline units you decide not to continue with as a major or minor will be counted as elective units. Information last updated on 17 April 2013 Page 5
6 Standard full time enrolment load per semester The standard full time enrolment load per semester is four (4) units. Students are still considered to be enrolled on a full time basis if they are enrolled in at least 75% of the standard full time enrolment load. Students are strongly advised not to exceed enrolment in 4 units per semester, and should consult with their course coordinator if they wish to enrol in additional units. The Core Curriculum The Australian Catholic University Core Curriculum has been designed to focus on aspects of the University s identity and mission. The units emphasises critical judgment, clear expression, ethical decision-making and concern for others, as individuals and as a community. University Core Units All students in the Bachelor of Arts program are required to complete the following University Core units as part of this program: UNCC100 UNCC300 Our World, Community and Vulnerability Understanding Self and Society: Contemporary Perspectives Two Core Curriculum Program units: These units build explicitly on the University Core units and all students in the Bachelor of Arts program are required to complete at least two Program Core units, the table below lists units offered in 2013: Semester 1 Semester 2 ARTS324 (Pre: 40cp in Visual Arts units) PHIL102 LEGL103 THCT100 ECON204 (Pre: 1 ECON unit at 100 level) ENVR204 PHIL104 For more information on the Core Curriculum please refer to One Community Engagement unit: This unit serves to integrate theory with practice. All students in the Bachelor of required to complete the following Community Engagement Unit: Arts program are HUMA247 Learning in the Community The Learning in the Community unit supports the development of student awareness of social responsibility to the wider community. Graduates should be persons whose moral development is mature and who are professionally competent, and able to make significant contributions to the profession and the wider community. This unit enables students to contribute to community service in tangible ways that support ethical, spiritual and personal development. Important Note: If you wish to undertake a placement with a community organisation where you will be working directly with young or vulnerable people, you will need to obtain a Working with Children Check, and/or Police Check. Further information on applying for Working with Children Checks and/or Police Checks is available from the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Learning and Teaching website ( As these can take some time to arrange, it is suggested that you submit your application at least six months before commencement of your placement. 7 What are Electives? Individual units undertaken other than those required for the selected Majors or Minors. These are listed in the Schedule of Unit Offerings or from other disciplines within the Faculty (subject to availability, unit limitations and provided that prerequisite and co-requisite requirements are met). Applying for Credit If you are applying for credit for previous studies or recognition of prior learning, it is essential that you submit your CR: Application for Credit form (with necessary documentation attached) to the School of Arts and Sciences Office at the earliest opportunity. For further advice regarding credit, please consult with your Course Coordinator. Students who have transferred from other degrees: If you have transferred into the Bachelor of Arts from another course, or through Dual-to-Single Degree transfer, you will need to consult with the Bachelor of Arts Course Coordinator or Advisor on what may be counted in this degree, and what you will need to enrol in. You may need to have an out-of-phase course plan drawn up for you. Students who commenced mid-year: If you have commenced studies in the Bachelor of Arts mid-year you will need to consult with the Course Coordinator or Advisor to find out what to enrol in. Some units are sequenced and have pre-requisites so you will need to enrol in appropriate units after seeking advice. Applying for Honours: Students with strong academic records are encouraged to apply for Honours at the end of their third year. Schools of Arts and Science will run an information session each year and students apply on-line. You can talk to lecturers or your course coordinator/advisor to find out more about honours. 13 Additional information on Discipline Areas within the BA Business Studies You can study two business units at Strathfield Campus but if you are intending to complete either a minor or major in Business Studies you will be required to complete additional units at North Sydney Campus, normally during years 2 and 3. A minor will require an additional 2 units completed at North Sydney while a major will require an additional 6 units completed at North Sydney. Note: Cross campus enrolment is subject to timetabling restrictions and cannot be guaranteed Mathematics Students intending to become secondary teachers of Mathematics by completing a Graduate Diploma in Education should do twelve units of Mathematics. This will require enrolment in two units of Mathematics each semester. History Students intending to become secondary teachers of History please note: Modern History as a first teaching area - must complete at least 6 units of Modern History in their History major (with a maximum of two at 100-level). Modern History as a second teaching area must complete 4 Modern History units (with a maximum of two at 100-level). Ancient History as a second teaching area must complete 4 Ancient History units (with a maximum of two at 100-level). (HIST216 Medieval Europe counts as a Modern History unit; HIST308 Historiography counts as either a Modern or Ancient History unit, please note that this unit is a core unit and must be completed for the History Major). Please note: Modern and Ancient History are treated as the single discipline area of History in the Curriculum and Teaching stream. Therefore, in addition to History, you must have a second, nonhistory teaching discipline area in your Arts units. Psychology To complete a Psychology major as part of their BA studies, students are required to undertake all 8 units of Psychology, including 3 core units; PSYC100 Psychology A, PSYC101 Psychology B and PSYC104 Research Design and Statistics 1. NOTE: Completion of the 8 unit major in the BA is NOT equivalent to completion of the 12 unit sequence in the Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) course and will not satisfy the requirements of an Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) 3 year sequence in Psychology. Study of Religions and Religious Education 1. Secondary Studies of Religion in NSW schools Students wishing to teach secondary Studies of Religion in NSW schools as a second teaching subject should include as a minimum the following subjects in their degrees (in addition to methodology units): THBS100 Introduction to the Bible THCT100 What Christians Believe THSR201 Ethics and Peace Studies in World Religions THSR202 Religion in Australian Culture Students may count: THCT100, THSR201 and THSR202 towards a minor or major in Study of Religion (THBS100 would be an additional elective) Information last updated on 17 April 2013 Page 13

Accreditation to Teach Religious Education in Catholic Schools Students who wish to prepare for the possibility of teaching Religious Education (years 7-10) in Catholic schools, should include at a minimum (in addition to methodology units): THBS100 Introduction to the Bible THCT100 What Christians Believe THCT202 Christian Symbol, Ritual and Sacrament Students may count all three of the units above towards a minor or major in Theological Studies. 3. Combination Studies of Religion in NSW schools and Accreditation to Teach Religious Education in Catholic Schools Students wishing to teach secondary Studies of Religion in NSW schools as a second teaching subject AND wishing to prepare for the possibility of teaching Religious Education (years 7-10) in Catholic schools, should include at a minimum (in addition to methodology units): THBS100 Introduction to the Bible THCT100 What Christians Believe THCT202 Christian Symbol, Ritual and Sacrament THSR201 Ethics and Peace Studies in World Religions THSR202 Religion in Australian Culture Students may count: THCT100, THSR201 and THSR202 towards a minor or major in Study of Religion (THBS100 and THCT100 would be additional electives) OR THBS100, THCT100 and THCT202 towards a minor or major in Theological Studies (THSR201 and THSR202 would be additional electives) Note well that at least 5 units of the major must be at an advanced level. Theological Studies Major - Three core 100-level units plus five advanced-level units from the Biblical Studies, Christian Thought and Christian Practice sequences. Core units THBS100 THCP100 THCT100 Introduction to the Bible The Signs of the Times What Christians Believe Minor - Four units (40 cp) with at least one 100-level and at least two advanced level units from the Biblical Studies, Christian Thought and Christian Practice sequences. Visual Arts Visual Arts majors are recommended to do a balance of studio-based units and history and theory units (i.e. four of each). Students intending to become secondary teachers of Visual Arts by completing a Graduate Diploma in Education should do twelve units of Visual Arts, including at least two 2D studio-based units and two 3D studio-based units and four history and theory units. This will require enrolment in two units of Visual Arts each semester. Mathematics minors should enrol in MATH107, MATH104, STAT201 and MATH218.
