2 IT System Management with NetEye WÜRTHPHOENIX NetEye is an Open Source applications package for monitoring complex IT infrastructures. The solution was developed to simplify IT system management while increa- sing its reliability and consequently optimising the services provided. NetEye is based on Nagios, an Open Source standard for IT monitoring with an estimated 250,000 users worldwide. What is Open Source? The term Open Source denotes software released with a licence which makes the source code available to any developers. The Open Source concept provides for the use, copying, sale and even freedom to edit the software while respecting the intellectual property of all those who have cooperated in its development. Completely free? In order to prevent the software released from being co-opted by commercial producers, a licence known as a General Purpose License (GPL) was defined by the FSF. This licence is now in its third version but is still the reference point for everything which is free. NetEye is based on this standard. The GPL provides for unlimited freedom to use the software, freedom to edit it at will and freedom to distribute it together with its source code. Additional services may be distributed for payment, provided this complies with the freedoms described above. A major advantage of the GPL for the final user is the security of having as a reference point not a single supplier company, but several companies or persons who are contributing to the development of the product and who share its ownership.

3 Why pay for Open Source? Open Source does not automatically mean free software. The essential condition in the Open Source software s life cycle, as we have already said, is that the freedom to distribute the source code is always respected, making it available to the user community so that it is updated consistently and in a way which benefits everyone (from commercial companies to non-profit organisations to private individuals). Taking that as its basis, the WÜRTH- PHOENIX NetEye business model is Free to use - pay for related services. The Nagios-based version of the product is free but additional proprietary services are distributed for payment. The customer receives an entire solution, consisting of an appliance with integrated, tested Open Source software. The support service also guarantees continuity of solution management including patching, testing, updating to new releases and technical support from Würth Phoenix. The model furthermore offers quality and continuity in use and professional upgrading of the software on a par with that for products marketed on a commercial basis (such as integration with other products, quality and continuity guarantee for end users and support services such as staff training). Another issue to point out is that the product itself has developed continuously over time into a complete System Management solution, covering functional areas which go beyond simple monitoring: these include, among others, Asset Management, Inventory Management and Capacity Management. Naturally, all the major components of these modules are based on Open Source solutions. The spread of Open Source: Gartner forecasts that by % of proprietary offers will contain Open Source components. Are there well-known examples of this model? The concept of so-called commercial Open Source is fairly widespread. The bestknown examples are the Swedish MySQL, which made more than 50 million euros with its free database before it was acquired by Sun Microsystems for more than a billion dollars. Another example of commercial success is Red Hat with its Linux distribution.

4 The main advantages: Open Source compared to proprietary software Low prices: Even with commercial Open Source products/solutions, i.e. those not distributed free, in the case of NetEye there are no licence costs. Unlike commercial products, NetEye does not impose any licence cost for monitoring and inventory nodes. Consequently, because purchase costs are low, Open Source software in general and NetEye in particular have a low TCO (Total Cost of Ownership). Transparency and security: Open Source software offers guarantees of reliability and security because it does not usually come from a single supplier or development group. The open code also ensures transparency about the programme functionalities and lack of dependence on a single supplier. Guaranteed support: Open Source applications are often supported by a developer community (in the case of Nagios, an international group) which guarantees continuity and professional assistance. Würth Phoenix is the first Preferred Partner in Italy of Nagios Enterprise, the official community created by the founder of Nagios, Ethan Galstad. The aim of this initiative is to work with selected partners to make available professional Open Source IT monitoring products and services, creating synergies which will assist future development. In this way, unlike software downloaded directly from the internet, all versions are integrated in order to guarantee their maximum quality and functionality.
