1 WÜRTHPHOENIX NetEye Release Note WÜRTHPHOENIX NetEye Version 3 Release date: March 2009 Overview of the updates and newly introduced functionalities in VS 3 In the following summaries, you can obtain a general picture of all new functionalities of WÜRTHPHOENIX NetEye version 3 released in March You may get an overview in what it differs from the actual version and most of all what kind of advantages and added value you might expect in terms of more productivity and reliability for your IT.

2 This paper is intended to show the actual evolution of our solution and our offerings over the last time, as well as what our enhancement and improvement plans in the near future. In this context we want to point out the fact that not all topics of our roadmap are result of our own developments. Consider that also upgrades and new functionalities of Open Source standards integrated in our solution such as Nagios or Cacti will be taken into account. In doing so we want to give you a overall review and comparison of what your re actually working with in relation to what your expectations for the future product development will be. 3 Capacity view (Cacti) Cacti is a solution integrated into WÜRTHPHOENIX NetEye to support the capacity management following the ITIL specifications. The monitoring tool acquires data through SNMP and external scripts to enable a sophisticated graphical representation. New graphing capabilities have been introduced with additional data and graph templates. Some of those are: Advanced ping graphs, introduced also to substitute the add-on SmokePing Microsoft Exchange server mail activity graphing template Microsoft SQL Server 2005 activity monitoring and performance graphs HP BladeSystem hardware graphing: Blades slots usage and power supply Fiber Chanel Switches: Brocade switch activity monitoring for single port and hardware monitoring like fan status and power supply. VMware VI ESX 3.5 performance graph of itself and for the virtual machine running in ESX Firewall Checkpoint performance graph for CPU, Memory, Drop packets NagVis NagVis is a visualization add-on gathering its information from the check results of Nagios. Maps can be created to illustrate geographical server locations, but also to represent structure and server wirings. Particular status icons are placed for hosts and services monitored by Nagios, indicating their current status. The updated version of NagVis 1.3 includes: Definition of multiple maps that can be linked to each other to build a hierarchy Advanced layout and administration capabilities have been introduced Overall map overview monitor Map rotation: Automatically rotate defined maps Automap: Generate hierarchical host structure given the Nagios parent-child definition. 4 GLPI GLPI is an Information Resource-Manager with an Administration interface coming with the purpose to support Asset Management, maintaining a database with an inventory of computers, software, printers, etc. Additional functionalities such as the automatic network-wide inventory scanner and a job-tracking-system with mail-notifications help to improve the daily work of the administrators. The last version is included within NetEye and introduces additional functionalities to manage the hardware and software inventory. Additional interface improvement is provided. WÜRTHPHOENIX NetEye SMS Tool The SMS Tool, implemented by Würth Phoenix, provides a web interface to monitor the status of the connected SMS modem and its system service. A dedicated SMS editor allows the creation and sending of short messages over the GSM modem. An additional interface allows the SMS service activity view and a service configuration. WÜRTHPHOENIX NetEye Message Console The MessageConsole is provided by Würth Phoenix with the purpose of being a collector of messages and alerts caught by the system, SNMP traps or scheduled reminder alerts for task to perform. The MessageConsole communicates with the Nagios monitoring service and is able to inform about problems, that might be notified in addition also via or SMS. As in Nagios, messages are of severity information, warning or critical. The level of severity that causes the reporting within Nagios and the notification towards defined contact groups can be set up from a determined configuration interface. The last release of NetEye includes the Message- Console with an improved user interface and the MessageConsole configuration interface.

5 WÜRTHPHOENIX NetEye NetMonitor The NetMonitor is the network intrusion monitor of NetEye. This utility is able to scan the installed switches for unauthorized users and devices by discovering unknown MAC addresses. When a new, not already recognized MAC address (within the hardware inventory or the already known MAC addresses from the NetMonitor) has been discovered on a switch, this MAC address is added and reported as denied within the NetMonitor. With the new release also the user interface has been redesigned and adapted to the NetEye Plugin look and feel. WÜRTHPHOENIX NetEye Dashboard The NetEye Dashboard is a visualization utility to create an overview of the measured performance values coming from the monitoring daemon Nagios. The customizable view can be defined within a dedicated drag and drop editor from all available data sources of the services checked by Nagios. The representation can be set through speedometers (performance value indication) and graphs. Within the dashboard it is possible to define multiple boards. WEBMIN Webmin is a web-based interface for system administration of Unix systems. Using any modern web browser, it provides administration views for user accounts, installed services (configuration of Apache, DNS, file sharing, etc.), file system and hardware performance. Webmin provides, next to the system shell, an additional way to access and configure the system from remote.

6 Documentation WÜRTHPHOENIX NetEye version 3 provides a complete Wiki-based documentation, providing a theoretical and practical introduction to the technologies incorporated in our solution. After a theoretical introduction a large number of practical implementation examples for various hardware and software architectures is given. In addition also specific components such as MessageConsole, SMS tool, NetMonitor and Dashboard are presented and explained. Nagios The daemon Nagios represents the core component of WÜRTHPHOENIX NetEye. It queries the configured hosts and services and notifies when problems arise within the infrastructure. In version 3 now also the newest release of fixes and patches of Nagios 2 and updated and extended package of the Plug-ins released by the Nagios community have been included. Plugins to check EMC Clarion AX, Brocade Fiber Switch, Microsoft SQL Server 2005, Microsoft Exchange 2007, Checkpoint Cluster are only an extract of examples of integrated out of the box useable checks. In addition NetEye has been prepared for the forthcoming introduction of Nagios version 3. Monarch Monarch is a web-based environment integrated into NetEye for the configuration and management of the monitoring environment based on Nagios, coming with the purpose to support the set-up and maintenance of the own IT infrastructure over the web-based configuration interface. With version 3 the integration into the overall solution has been improved and the authentication has been incorporated into the http authentication. Outlook to future minor releases The introduction of a network wide host and service auto discovery for intelligent self infrastructure recognition is planned for the next release of WÜRTHPHOENIX NetEye.
