1 Talawanda High School Career Planner & Course Scheduling Guide Dear Talawanda High School Parents and Students, Introduction Welcome to academic scheduling and career planning for the school year. The process of planning your academic program is one of the most important tasks you will perform during your high school years. The courses you take are not merely classes required to graduate from high school, but opportunities to prepare yourself for higher learning, the workforce, and success in life. The courses you select should reflect your current interests as well as future goals. This guide serves two purposes. First, it is a tool to help you identify career goals and plan an academic program of studies to support you in reaching those goals. Secondly, it is the process by which you select and sign up for your classes for next year. It is important that students include their parents to review the contents of this guide carefully and follow the instructions listed below. We have provided many steps along the way for you to ask questions and receive assistance from counselors and teachers as you plan your educational program. Instructions To choose classes for next year, we recommend students follow the steps listed below. Each step is part of the planning process and should be completed with a parent or guardian. Note that parent and teacher signatures are required in several places. Students should challenge themselves with courses that best meet their personal and career goals as they prepare for their future. Best wishes on your course selections! 3 THE HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM Talawanda High School offers over 100 different courses designed to meet the needs of the entire student population. In addition to courses offered at the high school, a wide variety of programs are provided for 11 th and 12 th grade students at Butler Technology and Career Development Schools as well as Post Secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) classes. If you have questions about any of these courses or your graduation requirements do not hesitate to contact your school counselor. CREDIT FLEXIBILITY Talawanda School District supports effective educational programs that provide opportunities for students to customize aspects of their learning around their needs and interests. By giving students choice, Credit Flexibility has the potential to increase authentic student engagement. Credit Flexibility is designed to broaden the scope of curricular options available to students, increase the depth of study possible for a particular subject, and allow the tailoring of learning time and/or condition. It removes time from the academic equation and puts mastery as the determining factor for awarding credit. Credit Flexibility is intended to motivate and increase student learning by allowing: Access to more resources, especially real-world experiences. Customization around individual student needs. Use of multiple measures of learning, especially those where students demonstrate what they know and can do, apply learning, or document performance. Students may earn initial credit by: Completing traditional coursework. Testing out through a grade of 80% or better. Completing an Individually Designed Plan (a course a student designs). Pursuing an Educational Option including but not limited to, distance learning, online education, independent study, or correspondence courses. Online learning providers and correspondence course providers must be approved by Talawanda School District. An approved list may be obtained from the Talawanda High School Guidance Office. 3

4 PASS-FAIL PROGRAM The option to take a class on a pass-fail basis instead of the traditional A, B, C grading system is offered to students so they can take a course without receiving the traditional grade. Only elective courses can be taken on a pass/fail basis. Students must meet all requirements for such courses including completion of tests/assignments, motivation, self-improvement, attendance, behavior, participation, and earnest effort in the course as they would be for a graded class. Only one (1) credit or less can be taken on a pass/fail basis. COURSE AUDIT Course audit affords an opportunity for students to expand their inquiry into particular areas of the THS curriculum. Only elective courses can be audited during the academic year. Credit is not issued to students in the audit program. Lab or studio courses requiring active participation of students in limited space may not be audited until all students taking the course for credit have been assigned. Student expectations in the areas of completion of tests/assignments, motivation, self-improvement, attendance, behavior, participation, and earnest effort in the course will be the same as for those students in credit courses. Only one (1) credit or less can be taken on an audit basis. TALAWANDA-BASED ONLINE COURSES Online courses are a series of self-directed coursework by way of electronic media (Internet) between the student and Teacher Of Record (TOR). Students must schedule a period during the school day for an online class. Only one online class can be taken at a time per period. Online courses may not be used for acceleration or early graduation unless approved by a parent/guardian, school counselor, and administrator. PHYSICAL EDUCATION OPTIONS Students who successfully complete TWO full seasons of interscholastic athletics, marching band, or cheerleading may be excused from the high school Physical Education requirement. This waives a student s PE requirement. Students will not receive PE credit nor will it appear on a student s transcript. Students desiring to be excused from the PE requirement must complete a registration form declaring their intent within ten (10) calendar school days following the 1 st official starting date for coaching and instruction in accordance with the Ohio High School Athletic Association Handbook. Students should check with the THS Athletic Office, their coach OR the Music Department Band Director for the official start date. Applications will not be accepted outside of the tenday window. Attendance will affect the ability to earn credit through the PE Option. 4

5 Criteria for Diploma with Honors The Ohio Department of Education awards the Diploma with Honors to students who complete a rigorous program of studies. The completion of these requirements is optional and not required for graduation from high school. Students who complete the high school academic curriculum shall meet at least seven of the following eight criteria: 1. Earn four units of English; 2. Earn at least four units of mathematics that shall include Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II or equivalent and another higher-level course or a four-year sequence of courses that contain equivalent content; 3. Earn at least four units of science including one unit of physics and one unit of chemistry; 4. Earn four units of social studies; 5. Earn either three units of one world language or two units each of two world languages; 6. Earn one unit of fine arts; 7. Maintain an overall high school grade point average of at least 3.5 on a four-point scale up to the last grading period of the senior year; OR 8. Obtain a composite score of 27 on the ACT assessment (excluding the optional writing test) OR a combined score of 1210 on the SAT verbal and mathematics sections (excluding the score obtained on the required writing section). Students who complete an intensive career-technical education curriculum shall meet at least seven of the following eight criteria: 1. Earn four units of English; 2. Earn at least four units of mathematics that shall include Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, and another higher-level course or a four-year sequence of courses that contain equivalent content; 3. Earn at least four units of science including one unit of physics and one unit of chemistry; 4. Earn four units of social studies; 5. Earn four units in a career-technical education program that leads to an industry recognized credential, apprenticeship or be part of an articulated career pathway which can lead to post secondary credit; 6. Achieve the proficiency benchmark established for the appropriate Ohio Career-Technical Competency Assessment or the equivalent; 7. Maintain an overall high school grade point average of at least 3.5 on a four-point scale up to the last grading period of the senior year; OR 8. Obtain a composite score of 27 on the ACT assessment (excluding the optional writing test) OR a combined score of 1210 on the SAT verbal and mathematics sections (excluding the score obtained on the required writing section). 5

6 Definition of Terms Advanced Placement Course- Advanced Placement (AP) courses are similar to Honors, but are designed to prepare students to pass the AP test for college credit. AP courses follow a prescribed AP curriculum and carry an additional weight of 1.0 for grades of C or better. Career Cluster- Areas of employment grouped together by knowledge, skill, and technology. Talawanda recommends that students choose a career focus. Taking classes within a career cluster does not lock the student into this career for the duration of high school and beyond. What it should do is help students determine their career focus and help direct their choices for post-high school education, the military or employment. Credits- Credits are based on Carnegie units of credit. In almost all cases, a course that lasts one full school year (two semesters) will receive one (1) credit. Courses that last one semester are worth one half (.5) credit. The exceptions to this are: Physical Education- The State of Ohio has mandated that one semester of PE shall earn one quarter (.25) credit; therefore two semesters of PE will be required to meet the graduation requirements of.5 credit in Physical Education. Co-Op Career/Technical Courses- These courses are multiple period courses and students receive credit corresponding to the amount of time spent in class or the job. College Prep Courses- All Talawanda classes are college prep courses. They are designed to prepare students for a two or four year, post-secondary course of study. Elective Course- Elective courses are not specifically identified as graduation requirements. Students will need to take certain elective courses in order to meet graduation requirements. Four (4) elective courses must be used toward a career major. Extra Time/Extra Help (ET/EH)- Extra Time/Extra Help is a guided study hall where students are assigned as an alternative to study hall. Students work with academic teachers on homework, studying for tests, organization and general help as necessary. Students are assigned on an as needed basis and will be expected to meet certain criteria to remain in ET/EH instead of a study hall. Honors Course- Honors courses are designed to challenge and test a student s academic knowledge and abilities. These courses cover much of the same material as regular classes, but more rapidly and with greater depth of understanding. Honors classes will carry an additional weight of.5 for grades of C or better. Intervention- A structured program of academic assistance to enable students to successfully complete a class. This help can be provided before, during and after school hours. Required Course- A required course is one that must be successfully completed in order to meet Talawanda graduation requirements and the State of Ohio. Prerequisites- A prerequisite is a condition that must be met before a student may enroll in a certain course. Prerequisites are listed at the end of each course description. Prerequisites exist to help insure the success of students in selected classes. Career/Technical Course- A class that is part of a course of study that prepares students to enter the world of work with a specific skill or certification. Courses are offered at Butler Technology and Career Development School campuses at D. Russel Lee Career/Technology Center, Natural Science Center, School of the Arts as well as at Talawanda High School. 6

7 Scheduling Procedures and Changes 1. Students currently in 8 th, 9 th, 10 th and 11 th grade should register for a minimum of six classes each semester. Athletes must be taking and passing with a 2.0 average a minimum of five-1/2 credit classes each semester to remain eligible during their season. Students should register for no more than one study hall each semester. 2. Students must meet graduation requirements for any given year before scheduling elective courses. 3. Students should indicate alternative elective courses on their registration sheet. These will be used to complete the student s schedule if the first choice elective is unavailable. 4. Policies for changing a student s schedule are listed below. Changes to a schedule must be made by the end of the second week of each semester. Students may: A. change their schedule in order to take courses necessary for graduation or for college requirements. B. change their schedule if the original or alternate course requests were not scheduled correctly by the computer. C. add a class to replace a study hall. D. withdraw from a course after the second week of the semester. However, they will receive a semester grade of WF which will be computed in the grade point average. E. change the academic level (i.e. college prep, honors) of a class after consultation with parent, school counselor, and teacher. This should occur within the first two weeks of the semester. Course Load Requirements Full time students at Talawanda High School are required to enroll in a minimum of six (6) courses per semester. Only students taking Post Secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO), Credit Flexibility or students in work-study programs may deviate from this requirement. 7

8 EXTRACURRICULAR CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS Participation in extracurricular activities provides students with extended experiences beyond the classroom. In addition, they are FUN! If you are not a member of an extracurricular activity we encourage you to investigate the organizations listed below. The admission offices of colleges and universities, technical and vocational schools, all branches of the military, AND employers like to see resumes that show students have been a part of clubs and organizations. This is where you learn important skills such as: teamwork, cooperation in a group settings, and communication skills. A whole new world will open up to you through your involvement in extracurricular activities. We want you to get involved. Your participation and talents are needed at THS! 10 Career Planning Guide Students should evaluate their personal interests, skills, abilities, and aptitudes when selecting a career. Occupations or jobs are grouped into one of six career clusters (see below). Each occupation emphasizes a particular set of skills, abilities, and aptitudes that may or may not be important to other occupations. Occupations that are similar to one another require similar types of skills. Choose a career cluster(s) that best represents your interests and skill set. On the following pages, you can select elective classes at Talawanda High School that are related to your career cluster. (Diagram below from Kuder Career Planning System) 10

Programs identified as College Tech Prep prepare students for the technical occupations of the future. It is an option that combines secondary education and higher education leading to an associate degree or beyond. College Tech Prep curricula provide advanced competencies in math, science, communication and technologies. The College Tech Prep program integrates academic, occupational and employability competencies at all educational levels. Curriculum competencies are designed jointly by local businesses, industry and labor representatives, in addition to high school teachers and college faculty. The competencies are sequenced to allow a seamless transition from high school to college. 15 Course Descriptions AGRICULTURE EDUCATION Agriculture Education is a state career~technical funded part of our curriculum. In order to receive full credit in an Agriculture Education course a student must: 1) complete both semesters 2) conduct a Supervised Agricultural Experience program (SAE project) involving approval of both the student, their parent/guardian, and their Agricultural Education instructor 3) participate in a minimum of three (3) FFA activities each grading period. Fee: $ Course Descriptions: Agriscience I (Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources) 2 semesters 1.25 credits Agriscience I is an introductory course for first year 9 th grade students intended to give an orientation to agriculture. This course will teach students how to work in groups and develop their leadership abilities through hands on activities. Students will use the animal science unit to promote proper animal husbandry and production to make sound decisions as a producer and consumer. Students will explain and demonstrate the basics in plant production and harvesting in helping make sound decisions as a consumer and producer. In the agriculture mechanics area, students will be involved in the identification, safe use and maintenance of both woodworking and metal working hand tools and power tools. There will be an emphasis on good record keeping through a Supervised Agricultural Experience Program (SAE). Throughout the first year, students will use the opportunities that National FFA provide for growth and build upon their interpersonal skills. They will receive basic training in public speaking, parliamentary procedure and leadership, citizenship, and cooperation. Prerequisite: none. Agriscience II (Plant and Horticulture Science) 2 semesters 1.25 credits This first course is intended for 10 th grade student, and focuses on the broad knowledge and skills required to research, develop, produce and market agricultural, horticultural, and native plants and plant products. Students will apply principals and practices of plant physiology and anatomy, plant protection and health, reproductive biology in plants, influences in bioengineering, plant nutrition and disorders. Environmental aspects of irrigation, chemical application, soils, and pest management will be studied and applied. Projects and activities will enable students to develop communication, leadership, and business management skills. Students will be introduced to small engine principles and maintenance. Included also will be a basic introduction to electricity and arc welding. Record keeping skills and leadership development activities will be emphasized throughout both semesters. Prerequisite: none. Livestock Science 2 semesters 1.25 credits Eleventh and twelfth grade students will apply principles of nutrition, health and reproduction to the management of animals, poultry and fish in production agriculture. Learners will demonstrate understanding of anatomy and physiology; apply genetic principles for improvement; apply knowledge of animal behavior, welfare, and husbandry principles; evaluate body/carcass composition; apply marketing principles to the sale 15

16 and distribution of livestock products; and employ communication, business, and management strategies appropriate for the industry. Prerequisite: none. Agriculture Communications, Leadership and Business 2 semesters 1.25 credits Eleventh and twelfth grade students will analyze attributes and capabilities of those in leadership positions and develop their communication, and leadership skills in authentic situations. They will examine elements of business, identify organizational structures and identify and apply management skills. Students will develop business plans, financial reports and strategic goals for new ventures or existing businesses. Learners will use marketing concepts to evaluate the marketing environment and develop a marketing plan with marketing channels, product approaches, promotion and pricing strategies. Learners will practice customer sales techniques and apply concepts of ethics and professionalism while understanding related business regulations. This course prepares students to apply journalistic, communication and broadcasting principles to the development, production, and transmittal of agricultural and environmental systems information. Additionally, this class will prepare students for careers in business, sales and marketing as they apply to the field of Agriculture. Students will also complete an agriculturally-related science fair project for competition at the local level. Prerequisite: none. Structural Engineering 2 semesters 1.25 credits Eleventh and twelfth grade students will apply principles of engineering and design along with an understanding of the properties and uses of construction materials to buildings and structures used in agriculture, horticulture and natural resources. The course will focus on the study and utilization of wood and lumber, metals, concrete and masonry, pipes and plumbing, and electrical systems. Students will design, plan, build and calculate costs-benefits analysis for construction projects while abiding by all building code and safety regulations. Due to the large volume of projects built in this course additional costs may be incurred by the student. Prerequisite: none. Agriculture and Industrial Power 2 semesters 1.25 credits The A&I Power course introduces students to the breadth of the Agricultural and Industrial Power Technology pathway. Students will learn the principles of agricultural and industrial power technology equipment systems including electronic, electrical, engines, fuel, hydraulics, and power trains. Students learn to operate and maintain agricultural & industrial equipment. They will learn to weld using SMAW, GMAW, Oxy acetylene, GTAW and plasma arc processes. Prerequisite: none. 16

17 ART The visual arts provide a rich source of information about our world and us. Art is a mode of inquiry and expression that helps people communicate ideas that cannot be captured in words alone. Students will increase their understanding of historical and cultural influences that have impacted societies, past and present. They will develop their abilities to interpret and communicate visually, thereby, developing their competencies in perceiving, problem solving and technical proficiency. Creativity and the holistic development of the individual are emphasized in all art courses. Talawanda High School provides students with a variety of course offerings. Study may include a sequential program of up to four years of general art. Introduction to Art (formerly Arts & Crafts) is open to students without a prerequisite to meet their Fine Arts requirement. Individuals successfully completing Introduction to Art may continue to intermediate and advanced courses. Admission to the advanced course (Honors Art) is based on junior/senior standing, successful completion of a minimum of two intermediate courses, in addition to a portfolio submission. It approaches the study of art as a means for introducing students to the Elements of Art: line, value, texture, shape, color and the Principles of Design. 18 2D Art 1 semester 1/2 credit This course explores the foundational skill of drawing, painting, and printmaking. Building off knowledge acquired in the beginning art courses, students will further their studies with an in-depth look at the basic drawing, painting, and printmaking skills, techniques, and media. Media will include all 2D media, for example all drawing, painting, and printmaking media will be explored. Projects become successively more complex, beginning with simple forms and ending with more complicated studies. A lab fee is required. Prerequisite: successful completion of Introduction to Art. 3D Art 1 semester 1/2 credit This course explores the foundational skill of building forms three-dimensionally. Building off knowledge acquired in the beginning art course, students will further their studies with an in-depth look at the exploration of 3D media including, but not limited to: clay, cardboard, papier-mâché, fabric, wire, etc. Projects become successively more complex, beginning with simple forms and ending with more complicated studies. A lab fee is required. Prerequisite: successful completion of Introduction to Art. Ceramics I 1 semester 1/2 credit This course is open to all students without previous art experience. This semester course is an in depth exploration of clay as a medium for creating functional ceramic forms. Students will learn coil building, slab construction, and be given an introduction to wheel throwing, surface decoration, and glazing techniques. A lab fee is required. Prerequisite: successful completion of Introduction to Art. Ceramics II 1 semester 1/2 credit This semester course is a further exploration of the concepts and techniques learned in Ceramics I. Students will spend most of the semester developing their hand building and wheel throwing skills. They will also be introduced to clay bodies and glaze chemistry. In addition, Ceramics II students will take some responsibility for studio maintenance: helping with reclaiming clay, mixing glazes, loading and firing kilns, etc. A lab fee is required. Prerequisite: successful completion of Ceramics I. Jewelry 1 semester 1/2 credit The course in Jewelry is a concentrated skill based approach to jewelry design and metalworking. Students will master basic jewelry construction and techniques, including: sawing, wire bending, single and multiple soldering, bezel stone mounting and the finishing processes. Students will create multiple jewelry pieces; among these will be wire necklace, a pendant, band ring and three-dimensional brooch. Other areas such as enameling will be included for students interested in developing their metalsmithing skills. A lab fee is required for this course. In addition, students must purchase a 2" X 3" rectangle of sterling silver. Prerequisite: successful completion of Introduction to Art. Honors Art 2 semesters 1 credit The 3 rd or 4 th year art student will continue to broaden their art experiences in the basic areas of study (drawing, painting, printmaking, design, graphics, sculpture and the craft areas). In-depth personal pursuits will be encouraged throughout the year. Career options and portfolio preparation will be emphasized. A lab fee is required for each semester. Prerequisite: junior/senior standing, successful completion of a minimum of two intermediate courses in addition to a portfolio submission. 18

19 BUSINESS AND TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION Today s society is rapidly becoming more and more information oriented. To be a successful member of a technological, computerized society students will need to know how to process and store both informational data and financial information in accepted, standardized ways. The business and technology courses offered by Talawanda High School afford our students an introduction to the business social sciences, help prepare them for a job, enrich college bound students, and insure success in both their future careers and personal lives. The following courses will be offered every other year: Computer Applications II, Economics, Web Design I, and Sports and Entertainment Management. The earliest availability of elective courses would be: Grade 9 Grade 10, 11 & 12 Business Startups Accounting I, II (formerly Introduction to Business Law Business & Entrepreneurship) * Economics Coding Personal Finance Computer Applications I * Sports and Entertainment Management * Computer Applications II Web Design I Digital Media Yearbook Digital Productions Introduction to Engineering Design Keyboarding * Computer Applications II, Economics, and Sports/Entertainment Management will be offered Course Descriptions: Accounting I 1 semester 1/2 credit Accounting I is designed to prepare the student for advanced accounting courses at the college level, entry-level accounting positions, and personal finance bookkeeping. Accounting is not a math class, only simple addition and subtraction is used in this class. Basic accounting principles and applications are studied as they relate to the accounting cycle. Topics covered will include journalizing transactions, posting to the general ledger, and financial forms, which includes the worksheet, income statement and balance sheet. There is a fee required for this course. Prerequisite: 10 th, 11 th, or 12 th grade (10 th graders MUST have an accumulated grade average of C or above). Accounting II 1 semester 1/2 credit Accounting II is a continuation course of Accounting I. Students will strengthen their accounting skills while learning more accounting concepts and practices. Additional concepts will include separating journals, granting and receiving credit, payroll, taxes and partnerships. The accounting cycle will include more adjusting entries as well as more than one owner. It is highly recommended to take both Accounting I and II to get the best, overall foundation of Accounting principles and practices. There is no fee for Accounting II. Students will continue to use the workbook from Accounting I. Prerequisite: Completion of Accounting I with a C or above. 19

20 Business Law 1 semester 1/2 credit Business Law is a course designed to familiarize the student with some of the basic principles of business law and to acquaint the student with the organization, jurisdiction, and function of courts. Topics include: family law, personal property, crimes and laws for minors and for small business owners. Prerequisite: 10 th, 11 th, or 12 th grade. Business Startups (formerly Intro to Business & Entrepreneurship) 1 semester 1/2 credit This course provides essential background for those students who plan further study in business and economics in high school or college with an emphasis on business ownership. It includes: some of the main characteristics of our economic system, how businesses are organized and operate; the marketing functions of business; the uses of communication and transportation in the economy; and the rights and responsibilities of workers, investors, managers, and the government in the economy. Other topics covered will be case studies, current events, and past and current entrepreneurs. Prerequisite: none. Coding 1 semester 1/2 credit This class will focus on the different paradigms and languages that allow us to use computer programs today. We will focus on understanding, writing, and debugging code, along with a variety of topics related to how computers function and their importance in the world today. Students will gain problem solving and collaboration skills that will be beneficial not just in the computer sciences, but in building a basic foundation for all other pursuits into this expanding field. Prerequisite: none. Computer Applications I 1 semester 1/2 credit This course is highly recommended for all students and is designed to teach the features of one of the world s most popular software packages, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). Word will be taught with emphasis on creating, formatting, and editing a variety of documents, including flyers, research papers, and attractive cover letters and resumes. Students will also learn the basic skills for designing spreadsheets, charts and presentations. A fee is required for this course. Prerequisite: none. Computer Applications II 1 semester 1/2 credit This course is designed for students who are interested in developing advanced skills in Microsoft Office. Students will learn advanced concepts in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access. A fee is required for the course. (Offered school year) Prerequisite: Successful completion of Computer Applications I. Digital Media 1 semester 1/2 credit The focus is this class is to develop students to compete in the digital age using various forms of computer-based design, communication, and collaboration. In Digital Media, students will be exposed to how our world has been shaped through the digital age along with the impacts of various forms of media. Students will advance their knowledge of a wide variety of digital forms of communication and collaboration such as Twitter, Google Applications, Wikis, Blogs, along with other programs as the world s technology evolves. Students will also be designing various kinds of logos, advertisements, and web-based elements that will be used during producing a final project to be presented to the class. To accomplish this, pupils will gain 20

21 experience in design programs such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and other computer-based applications that will challenge them to not only be creative, but give them essential skills to compete in a digital world. Prerequisite: none Digital Productions 1 semester 1/2 credit Students will be introduced to the various methods and practices of photo and video production with an emphasis on digital production. The students will be knowledgeable about the structure and function of different kinds of image and video capture equipment along with the supporting hardware and software that goes along with producing media digitally. Students will be producing different kinds of school and sports programming, as well as other community related productions using methods and practices they learn in the classroom. This class may require work outside of regular class hours to meet deadlines or attend events. Prerequisite: none. Economics 1 semester 1/2 credit Economics is a course that enables the student to examine and evaluate the U.S. economic system and why individuals, businesses and the government make the decisions they do. This course takes a look at the advantages and disadvantages of the free market system, the government's influence and role in our capitalistic economy, and how goods and services are produced and maintained. (Offered school year) Prerequisite: 10 th, 11 th or 12 th grade. Introduction to Engineering Design 1 semester 1/2 credit The major focus of Introduction to Engineering Design is the design process and its application. Through hands-on projects, students apply engineering standards and document their work. Students use industry standard 3-D modeling software to help them design solutions to solve proposed problems, document their work using an engineer s notebook and communicate solutions to peers and members of the professional community. Prerequisite: none. Keyboarding 1 semester 1/2 credit This course is for all students who wish to master the correct techniques of computer keyboarding for personal, college or business use. The first part of the course is devoted to learning the keyboard and to acquiring speed and accuracy. Business letters, memos, tables, reports, and resumes are then introduced. Students planning to further their knowledge in business software should schedule for Computer Applications I. A fee is required. Prerequisite: none. Personal Finance 1 semester 1/2 credit Personal Finance is a course designed to develop consumer efficiency in obtaining and using economic goods and services. Topics include the function and use of banks, the use of credit in business and personal family business, the nature and causes of economic risks and how insurance protects the individual from the risks of loss of property or earning power, the need for savings and investment planning, the methods of efficient personal and family financial management, as well as financial security. Prerequisite: 10 th, 11 th or 12 th grade. Sports and Entertainment Management 1 semester 1/2 credit Gain knowledge in one of the most rapidly expanding fields of management and marketing in today s job market. Topics to be covered include professional sports, salary caps, sport management and marketing agencies, sport tourism, sport marketing, international sports as well as careers in sports-related fields. (Offered school year) Prerequisite: 10 th, 11 th or 12 th grade. 21

22 Web Design I 1 semester 1/2 credit Web Design I is a course intended for students to develop skills needed to become a Web Designer. It allows students to become a skilled and creative user of web design technology. This course gives students the opportunity to create their own unique, functional web sites that engage an audience. Students will become experts at evaluating web sites and be able to give constructive feedback to improve their own and others sites. A fee is required for this class. (Offered school year) Prerequisite: 10 th, 11 th, or 12 th grades. Yearbook 2 semesters 1 credit This course is designed for the purpose of publishing and selling the yearbook. Students work on page layouts, ad sales, yearbook sales, and taking/editing photos. Students will also work with graphic design software to create cover art, themes and page layouts. Students are expected to attend some sporting events and school-related activities outside of the normal school day to take photos for the yearbook. Students are required to enroll for both semesters. Because of this, credit will be granted only after successful completion of the work in both semesters. Prerequisite: 10 th, 11 th, and 12 th grades only with teacher recommendation. 22

23 Career Based Intervention Program (CBIP) Career Based Intervention Program 2 semesters 4 credits The Career Based Intervention Program is a career-technical program designed for students in grades 7-12 who are eligible based on academic and/or economic need. The CBI Program is designed to help students improve academic competence, graduate from high school, develop employability skills, set goals and implement a career plan, and participate in a career pathway in preparing for post secondary education and future careers. Combining educational and service learning opportunities, all students are expected to participate in a Community Based Student Organization. This student club provides opportunities for local and state competitions as well as venues for service learning and community service. This course provides students with an opportunity to meet the academic needs for graduation while allowing for students to maintain appropriate employment within the business world. Students must meet the criteria set by the Butler Technology and Career Development Schools for both employment and academic eligibility. The CBI Program primarily uses computer-aided instruction to deliver curriculum materials. Students also earn a half credit of electives each semester in a teacher-led course called Related. This course addresses life and job skills students need for the future. Prerequisite: 11 th & 12 th grade and acceptance into the program by Butler Tech. Career Based Intervention Program/Connections 2 semesters 4 credits The Connections Career Based Intervention Program is a career-technical program designed for students who are eligible based on academic and/or economic need. This program is designed to help students improve academic competence, graduate from high school, develop employability skills, set goals and implement a career plan, and participate in a career pathway in preparing for postsecondary education and future careers. Students take a combination of traditional classes at Talawanda High School for ½ of their day. The remainder of the day is spent at Miami University with an opportunity for credit recovery through the use of online classes to achieve the academic needs for graduation while having the opportunity to maintain appropriate employment within the business world. The program is designed to assist students by meeting during non-traditional, afternoon and evening hours. Prerequisite: 9 th or 10 th grade and acceptance into the program by Butler Tech. Career and College Readiness Career and College Readiness 1 semester 1/2 credit Through this required class, juniors will explore future career options and educational paths towards those careers. Career and College Readiness will provide students the chance to sharpen 21st Century Skills and allow for completion of documents necessary for the future. Individual research, guided investigation, personal exploration, and reflection will allow students to create a reasonable educational and professional map for his or her future. Prerequisite: 11 th grade. 23

24 English The English program must fit the needs of students who live in a world in which communication is increasingly important. English classes must go beyond basic reading and writing to prepare students for current and future demands of the work place, society, and the individual. In order to participate fully in society and to realize their potential, students must encounter an English program in which reading, writing, listening, and speaking are developed for authentic purposes and audiences. Students are surrounded by language in all forms in an interactive classroom. To become competent in all the language processes, the processes must be addressed in an integrated fashion. In addition, the English department encourages all teachers in the building to be teachers of English. English I, English II, English III (or AP Language & Composition), and English IV (or either AP option) are required courses for graduation. It focuses on reading, writing, vocabulary, grammar and study skills. This course creates a foundation that enables the student to achieve throughout high school and beyond. The course is designed to prepare students for the Ohio Graduation Test (OGT) given the 10th grade year. Successful completion of both semesters of this course is necessary to meet graduation requirements. Therefore, summer school is highly recommended for students who do not pass both semesters of English I so they can keep pace with the four year English program. Prerequisite: none. English I Honors 2 semesters 1 credit English I Honors is designed as a pre-advanced Placement course for the academically gifted student who intends to enroll in the AP English program during his/her 11th and 12th grade years. The curriculum is structured to provide an accelerated, intensive preparation in literary analysis, critical thinking skills, and the writing process.
