We offer a wide variety of courses that meet a range of learners needs. At we will be offering Advanced Placement core courses as well as our 10-1, 10-2, 10-3 and 10-4 core classes. Students will find that all of our academic core subjects are rigorous and engaging and all of our programs challenge and support our students success. This course guide has been carefully compiled to assist students and parents/ guardians to select courses and design a three-year school program that best meets the learners needs and interests. Your responsibility as a student begins with this course guide. Read this guide carefully to become familiar with the information in it: make informed decisions about your high school program; carefully select the courses that are right for you; make a commitment to yourself always to do your best in your studies and other school activities; finally, enjoy yourself as you reap the benefits of an exciting and rewarding educational experience at.

2 Career and Technology Studies (CTS) s Career and Technology Studies (CTS) program offers you a variety of courses under a series of pathways designed to help you discover your interests in practical and purposeful ways. Courses are divided into four occupational clusters. Each course (module) of study is worth one credit and a number of courses are bundled together to create a program. Courses must be taken in sequence: Introductory 10 Intermediate 20 Advanced 30 I. Business Administration, Finance and Information Technology (BIT) Money $marts 10 (6 credits) Offers a blend of CTS modules in both Management and Marketing and Enterprise and Innovation. What is your passion? You will learn the traits of successful people and businesses, explore the steps in setting up a business and examine some successful businesses. You will also be given some Bucks to invest in the stock market. If you like to take risks and want to be in control of your financial future, this course is for you. II. Health, Recreation & Human Services (HRH) Cosmetology 10 INTRODUCTORY 1 (6 credits) - 1 period Introductory 1 develops basic skills in manicuring, hair and scalp care, skin care practices, facials, and long hair design. Personal and professional practices will be emphasized for success in all career opportunities that deal with customer services. Cosmetology 10 INTRODUCTORY 2 (6 credits) - 1 period Prerequisite: Introductory 1 Introductory 2 develops skills in hairstyling techniques, nail art, French manicuring, scalp treatments, makeup, and chemical texturizing. Courses offered introduce advanced techniques and professional practices in preparation for customer service. You can accumulate mandatory hours of training and courses required for credentialing by the Trade and Certification Branch of Alberta government. In order to achieve a Provincial credentialed hairstyling license, a further 1400 hours will need to be completed in a salon as an apprentice along with completing the Provincial multiple choice theory and practical exams. Foods 10 (6 credits) 2

Health, Recreation & Human Services (HRH) - Continued Legal Studies 10 (5 credits) Sports Medicine 15 (5 credits) This CTS course of study includes a detailed introduction to anatomy (bones, muscles and joints) and their relation to sport. Modules to be covered and available to SMED 15 students include Musculo-Skeletal System #1, Injury Management #1, Health and Wellness Fundamentals, Cardiovascular System and an Athletic Taping and Strapping Project. Also, basic First Aid, CPR and ethics in sport are introduced in the field of Sports Medicine. The practical part of the course will involve extensive athletic taping, projects and anatomical model construction. You will be required to complete a minimum of 15 hours of volunteer service. Sports Performance 15, 25, 35 (5 credits) III. Media, Design & Communication Arts (MDC) This cluster is designed to encourage you to solve problems, make decisions and develop the flexibility needed to adapt to various situations relating to design, communication and aesthetics. Fashion Studies 10 (6 credits) Graphic Design 10 (5 credits) Offers a blend of CTS modules from Communication Technology and Design Studies. The Graphic Design program is an exciting and engaging computer studio based program. In this course you will learn to employ fundamental elements and principles of design for various media and gain a strong foundational multidisciplinary experience in preparation for other Communication Technology courses. You will discover and develop skills to relay a message effectively using various forms of media, including print, photography and visual media. Graphic design computer programs like Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign and Sketchup are utilized. Three pathways are possible: photography, design and graphic arts. Multimedia 10 (5 credits) Offers CTS modules from Communication Technology In Multimedia, a variety of application software will be introduced. Using graphic software such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, you will create, scan, import and manipulate graphic images. Additionally, in multimedia you will develop introductory skills in Photography and Animation, along with options of filmmaking and web design. 3

4 IV. Trades, Manufacturing & Transportation (TMT) This cluster focuses on investigating and developing the knowledge, skills and attitudes relative to the design, construction, fabrication and maintenance of a product. Construction Technology 10 (6 credits) Mechanics 10 (6 credits) Knowledge and Employability Occupational Courses: Art/Design, Auto Mechanics, Construction, Cosmetology, and Foods Knowledge and Employability (K&E) courses are for individuals who learn best through hands-on experiential learning activities. The occupational courses are comprised of 5-credit courses that relate to well-defined occupational areas of specialization. Fine and Performing Arts Art 10 (5 credits) Dance 15 (5 credits) Drama 10 (5 credits) Advanced Acting 15 Students who successfully audition for a part in the fall or spring production will be awarded 5 credits for Advanced Acting. Rehearsals are held outside the timetable. In this course, you will meet daily from 3:30-5:30 pm from September to December (Fall) or February to May (Spring) Musical Theatre 15, 25, 35 (5 credits each) Technical Theatre 15, 25, 35 (5 credits each) Film Studies 15, 25, 35 (5 credits each) 4

5 Choral Music Concert Choir 15, 25 (3 credits each) Concert Choir 35 (5 credits) The Concert Choir is open to all at. This is a full year course that meets once per week at 7:45 a.m. for one hour. A variety of choral repertoire is offered and this group is a performing ensemble. Assessment is primarily based on active participation. Vocal Jazz Ensemble 15, 25, 35 (3 credits each) This is an auditioned group of 12 to 16 singers interested in singing in a jazz style. This course is offered outside the timetable. Vocal Studio 10, 20, 30 (5 credits each) This course introduces you to singing with focus on the development of tone and vocal production. You will have the opportunity to experience a recording studio idol environment by laying down vocal tracks over your chosen song, resulting in a digital recording (CD). You will then be a recorded artist with your own CD. You will learn to sing in many styles and experience introductory music theory. Instrumental Music Guitar 10, 20, 30 (5 credits each) You do not need previous experience playing guitar to be successful in these courses. Lessons are taught in a group situation with individuals of varying ability levels. These courses will also deal with other areas of general music including music notation, guitar technique, transposition, and general music theory. You must have your own acoustic guitar. Check with the music teacher for more details. Instrumental Jazz Studies 15, 25, 35 (3 or 5 credits each) The Other Band (T.O.B.) Jazz Ensemble (3 credits) - is open to any music student registered in Music 10, 20 or 30. This is a full year course and is non-auditioned. This course is offered outside the timetable. Senior Jazz Ensemble (5 credits) - is an auditioned group of music students. The music will be challenging with improvisation opportunities. This group meets twice weekly all year outside the regular class timetable. Music 10 (5 credits) Non-semestered, timetabled together with P.E. 10 5

6 Instrumental Music - Continued Band 15 (5 credits) Required additional course for Music 10 Students This is a full year course, which meets twice weekly, prior to the start of the regular school day. The course further develops the elements contained in Music 10. Creative musicianship is also introduced. It is recommended for the student who wishes greater performance success in the music department. 1. It is expected that students registered in Music 10/20/30 will also register in Band 15/25/35 for their performing group. 2. If you wish to use a school-based instrument, there is a yearly fee of $ An extra-curricular jazz program is also offered (see above). 4. Performances and concert band materials are ongoing and will be tied in with all 10, 20, 30 and 15, 25, 35 courses. Professional Development in the Arts 35 The Professionalism in the Arts Certificate Program is offered to students in grade 12 who have demonstrated a passion for the Arts. You may take a 3 or 5 credit course depending on the time needed to fulfill all requirements in the program. You will have the opportunity to explore the process involved in preparing for a career in the fine and performing arts. The certificate program is different from other fine arts courses because it focuses on preparing for the marketing and business aspect of being an artist or performer. It is designed to connect you with professional performers and artists, directors, producers, agents, photographers and technicians. The curriculum addresses audition and portfolio preparation and the communication skills necessary to enrol in post-secondary programs or production work. This will include the study of resume preparation, audition and video work, styles of portfolios and skills necessary for networking. 6

7 Personal Development Yoga 15, 25, 35 (3 credits each) This course will safely introduce you to the basic postures (asanas), breathing techniques and relaxation methods of yoga. It will also introduce the historical roots of yoga and give you an understanding of basic anatomy and physiology as it applies to the discipline. You will develop an enhanced appreciation for and acceptance of your body. The program is designed for you to experience the benefits of increased flexibility, strength, focus and concentration. You will learn to be non-judgmental about your own and others yoga practice. Through continued practice, you will relieve stress, learn to relax and experience the health benefits of a yoga practice. Second Languages The Second Languages department encourages its students to develop an awareness and tolerance of the culture inherent in the chosen language. This is accomplished through student generated cultural presentations, which often include food, music, art, history, etc. French 10-3Y (5 credits) This entry-level course provides a practical learning experience using a theme-based approach. You do not need previous language experience. Emphasis is placed on vocabulary building through conversation and simulated real life situations. Basic grammar is developed through oral and written components. If you have successfully completed junior high school French 7, 8 and 9 you should enrol in French 20-3Y. French 20-3Y (5 credits) This course is a continuation of French 10-3Y and is designed for students who have already developed the vocabulary and grammar basics of the beginner level. You must have basic proficiency in both oral and written components of the language. Using a thematic approach, this course will continue to enhance your conversational skills. Spanish 10 (5 credits) Spanish 10 is a beginner s course designed to equip you with a practical knowledge of Spanish using a theme-based approach. It allows you the opportunity to use basic language structures in simulations of everyday conversations. No previous Spanish is required. * Grade 9 students from a bilingual program or French background should meet with the French teacher to determine course placement. Those wishing to challenge the French 30-3Y or Spanish 30 course MUST see the appropriate teacher at the beginning of the semester. Note Course availability is subject to a minimum number of requests. 7

8 Learning Support The Learning Centre (TLC) The Learning Centre is a department that works with diverse learners. TLC is the link between students with special learning needs, parents, teachers and administration to help promote and enable successful learning. The department is responsible for coordinating the Individual Program Plans (IPP) for students who have been assessed with an Alberta Education code. Reading 15 (5 credits) Prerequisite: Grade 9 Teacher recommendation The Reading 15 class has been designed to help students improve their reading and comprehension of texts. The outcomes for the course are: improve pre-reading and reading strategies, develop attitudes and characteristics of fluent readers and read to meet personal needs, interests and for pleasure. The course helps students expand their vocabulary, improve their writing and develop fundamental study skills. Students also learn to participate effectively in group tasks and to use school and community resources. Students take this course in semester one and continue in Grade 10 English semester two. Learning Strategies 15 (5 credits) Prerequisite: Grade 9 Teacher recommendation This course has been designed to encourage students to develop a greater understanding of themselves as a learner by increasing personal awareness of learning styles, learning preferences, areas of strength, areas of need, interests and affinities. It will also focus on developing understanding of the learning process and teaching skills and strategies that will improve organization and management of time and resources, memory and attention, and encourage greater success in areas of assessment and evaluation. The course will also encourage students to become self-advocates for their learning needs and participants in their student success. Resource Room We support our students through our Resource Room where teachers send students to receive individual support with completing assignments or accommodations for exams. English Language Learner (ELL - formerly ESL) If you are registered in an ELL course, you will take an English Language Proficiency Test in order to determine your language proficiency level and to assist staff in better supporting your language learning needs. Our focus is to develop your English communication skills, both oral and written. Besides the English language component, Canadian Studies and Culture are also taught in the ELL classes. Advancing to the next level within the ELL course sequence is dependent upon your competency at mastering the language. You will be able to take other courses while you are working on your language acquisition in the ELL class. Your guidance counsellor will try to tailor your timetable to reflect your individual learning needs and goals.
