Modernising Your Constitution To maintain relevance, today s clubs are catering to so much more than their core constituents. 4 MEMBERSHIP MEMBERSHIP The downturn in golf membership and participation rates experienced at Everglades is very much in line with what is happening nationally. In the four years between 2012 and 2016, 14 golf clubs around Australia have ceased to operate. This is a sobering fact. In the same period Social Golf Club membership has increased from around 15,000 to 22,000. It is clear to see that traditional Club membership no longer appeals to a lot of golfers. Statistics also show us that the average age of participating golfers is years of age. The Membership Committee, which was established by the Board last October, has worked hard to increase and retain membership, particularly in the area of golf. The coaching clinics held by the Pro Shop have been quite successful, with five new Rookie Memberships coming from 18 participants in the clinics. This is a really good result for Women s golf and more clinics will be held, starting in September together with a mixed coaching clinic also starting in September. See the ProShop for further details on any of these clinics. The new category of Silver Golf membership has been popular with a number of full playing golfers taking up this membership rather than leaving golf altogether. It is also popular with those golfers who have limited time to play golf and the 12 games per year offered under this membership is more attractive to them. account. The points in this account can be redeemed at any time for purchases within the Club or the ProShop. Private funds can still be accumulated in your Cash on Card account and bowls winnings will remain in this account. Money in the Cash on Card account can be used towards payment of fees or any other purchase within the Club or ProShop. The funds in both the Cash on Card Account and the MiClub Golf Winnings Account are not cleared at 30 June. For information or balances in any of these accounts please see the staff at Reception. Whilst the Membership Committee is actively seeking ways to attract new members and retain existing members, we can t do it alone. Members are encouraged to submit ideas to the Committee which might help in this regard, and to continue to support your Club by using our great sporting facilities and patronizing the Club as often as possible. Come in and enjoy a drink, coffee or lunch after your game. Meet friends here for a catchup at our Coffee Shop or Bistro. People power is strong. You just have to make the effort. It is your Club you have the power to ensure its success. Judy Andrews Chair Membership Committee With the downturn in membership at Everglades around 9%, and the resulting downturn in revenue, measures have to be taken to ensure the golf course is used to maximum capacity. For some time now mixed Sunday golf numbers have been declining. This has necessitated opening up the course to Social Club players. Every effort is being made to ensure places are available for members wanting to play on Sunday however the decision has not been popular with some. The reality is that if we cannot fill places with our own golfing members, we must invite Social Club players and so your cooperation is needed. The Hyundai Sunday Series operating each Sunday until 20 August has generated interest once again in Sunday golf. Competition is strong to take out the winning prizes for both men and women. House Account members are reminded that $50 from your annual subscription in most membership categories is transferred to your House Account. This money can be spent in the Club through the bar, bottle shop or bistro/coffee shop. It is important that you use this $50 because at the 30 June each year the House Account is cleared. In other words, if you haven t spent it by then, you lose it. There has been a change to another member account and that is the Cash on Card account. In the past you could put private funds into this account and your golf and bowls winnings also went into this account. From 1 July golf winnings will not be put into this account, but will go into a separate account MiClub Golf Winnings Account as points. As soon as a competition is closed, golf winnings will automatically go into this 6

WOMEN S BOWLS WOMEN S BOWLS Congratulations to our new President Jan Jones. Jan your strong rapport with Everglades ladies bowlers will enable easier planning, organizing, and carrying out responsibilities. Your enthusiasm is contagious! Everglades Ladies bowls has an addition to our uniform it s a skort. For all the ladies with great legs! Montgomery Ward claimed in their 1959 Spring/Summer catalogue to have invented the garment they called a skort. It was a short knife or accordion pleated skirt with an attached bloomer underneath. Years later, the term was applied to a pair of shorts with a flap of fabric across the front (and often the back) making the garment appear to be a skirt. In recent years, the term skort has been given to any skirt with an attached pair of shorts. Wendy Moore parading in the skort! Thursday 20th July Finals of the Everglades Ladies Minor Pairs Won by Wendy Ide and Carol Edwards The game was hard in the strong winds. Carol and Wendy were down 11-1 and made a final comeback against Josie Goodwin and Sandra Medhurst. Diane Van der Vyver - Ladies Bowls Umina Ladies bowls held the Kingfisher on 17th & 18th July 24 teams entered. Two days of beautiful weather to get out on the rinks and enjoy our wonderful winter days. After a well organised competition, Umina provided very enjoyable entertainment. Everglades had 6 teams enter this competition and top bowls were played by all our girls. The top team of the 2 days winning all 4 games were Wendy Ide, Kay O Sullivan, Jeanine Vigard, & Sue O Connor Congrats to our Everglades team. 7 WOMEN S BOWLS Creightons Funeral Services sponsored the Everglades Annual Waterlily Pairs which was held on 26th June. We had a wonderful roll up of 28 teams from seven local clubs. This competition was changed in 2016 to Major/Minors format. Entry fee of $40 per team included Morning Tea and Lunch, both served in the auditorium. Two games of 15 ends were played. Our thanks to Stan Johnson our umpire for the day. Winners were Terry Causby and Gloria Bosward. Runners-up Judith Maroney and Yvonne Austin both teams from Umina Beach Bowling Club. Maureen Sagua and Margaret Oliver from The Entrance were third. Fay Boyd for Ladies Bowls Best morning Card. MEN S BOWLS It s been another month of activities for Mens Bowls with Championships in full swing. We had aged championships completed and the Minor Singles completed with our Senior Vice President Len Haddock win our Minor Singles beating Jon Gibbon in the final. In the Minor Pairs Ian Richardson and Neil King won. In our Aged Championships Stan Johnson won the over 80 s and Tom Cain won the s. For our Thirsty Thursday bowlers there has been over 50 bowlers at each thursday this month and much merriment has been had. Thirsty Thursday is an ideal introduction to bowls as it is in a relaxed environment and the emphasis on enjoyment not competitiveness. Please don t forget to get your name in early and all welcome. Just a reminder that Tuesday s bowls is normally Jackpot day and with the jackpot normally starting at over $200 it is well worth entering. When I checked last the Jackpot was over $600. By the end of the weekend 29/30th we will have new Major Triples champions. This years competition has had some great matches and we wish the finalist well in Sundays Final. If you can t get to the club to watch the games, please check the board for the results. Barbara McPherson and Sharyn Teasdale from Everglades took fourth place. Best Afternoon Card.

WOMEN S GOLF July has been a choc-a-block month, beginning with the final of the 2B Knockout; and what a final it was, keenly played to the bitter end. Followed by a small group of supporters, the match went to the 19th hole, with Val Stanford & Marg Hockley the winners, over Lorraine George & Judy Andrews. Next on the agenda was the July Club Medal, and congratulations go to the Division1 winner, Patsy Elliott who over the years has been no stranger to the winners dais. Mon Capitan came 2nd on a countback to Gayle Colley. Denise Manfredotti was an excited winner of the Division 2 medal, with 2nd and 3rd to Ann Kane and Yvonne Kirkin, paying us a visit in between her sojourns in the caravan around this vast country. Division 3 was won by Ann Crowe with her cart buddy, Joan Forwood close behind, and 3rd went to Carmel Brown. The following Tuesday dawned with (thankfully) fine weather for our Day of Golf the Bowl, Salver & Longmarkers Cup, sponsored this year by The House of Woy Woy. The Gross Winner of the Salver was Kim Burke from Magenta, this did not come as a great surprise as Kim plays off a handicap of 1, followed by another low marker, Yvonne Boardman (3) from Toukley. However, our girls shined in the Gross for Division 2, with Bev Moore taking home the Bowl, and Margie Murray close behind as the runner up. Everglades did not allow any other clubs to see the light of day in the top prizes for the Nett. Division 1 Nett was won by our favourite vegetarian, Helena Miksevicius, followed by Pat Clarke who donned the runners up hat. Jan Counsell was the winner of Division 2 Nett on a countback to Pat Myles if only one extra putt had gone in the hole! The Longmarkers Cup is played by Division 3 in a stableford format, with Jan Johnson most thrilled to receive the Cup this year. Coral Walker received her prize for 2nd, with Marilyn Macalpine 3rd on a countback to Lois Elworthy

WOMEN S GOLF Wendy White and Heather Burrett were at the top of the nett leaderboard for the CCWGA District Foursomes held at Everglades this year, with Kaye McKay and Julia Campbell 3rd on a countback. Excellent work! Finally, finishing off an extremely busy month, we held Xmas in July Mufti Day, sponsored by our own Darren Chivas, thoroughly enjoying being up close and personal with our winners especially Denise!. Fortunately it was a super day weather wise, so those of us who raided the dressing up box, were able to play golf without the cold seeping into our bones. More importantly, we played a 4 person team stableford won by the team of Denise Manfredotti, Bobbie Moran, Marie Gaven and Lyndall Hendry who all dressed up as golfers. Val Stanford, Cathy Byrne, Marg Hockley and Meg Warr were runners up and dressed in red. A reminder for August the CCWGA Charity Morisset on Monday 14th, and for all us chocoholics (and who isn t), Death by Chocolate on the 17th. And a loving shout out to our members who s health at this time is not up to par. Atlantic Salmon With crushed chats, wilted spinach, and wild lime glaze. At the HOP Dinner & Show 26th August at 5.30pm $30 Per Person Two Courses served alternate drop followed by the show At the Hop. Reserved Seating. Tickets on sale 1st July, Sticky Date Pudding With butterscotch sauce and vanilla ice cream. Main: Dessert: Kilcoy Sirloin With pumpkin mash, green beans and rosemary jus. With guitars, keyboards, bass, drums and lots of vocals, At the Hop are the perfect tribute to 50s/60s Rock`n`Roll. At the Hop covers a range of rock`n`roll, rockabilly, swing and doo-wop. 17 This will be a great show to get you up on the dance floor.

MEN S GOLF MEN S GOLF From the Presidents Table Welcome back to all our Golf Members who have re-joined Everglades Golf Section for another year of golf, mateship and enjoying our course improvements. Don t forget our Annual meeting will be held in the Star Room on Monday 23rd October If you have any items to be put on the agenda please write it down and leave it in the Golf Office attention Dick Paull Golf President or Colin Draper Golf Secretary. We are getting in early don t complain about things be in attendance to voice your point of view. From the Captains Table With reference to the Mixed Foursomes they have been deferred and the two match committee s Men and Ladies will meet to decide when the event will be played. Watch notice board. The match committee have developed new local rules decisions, regarding Bollards-not to be removed; Hoops and Ropes may be removed, but must be reinstalled. Please refer to notice board re the new rules. May I suggest, it is essential for the health and playability of the course turf that all golfers are encouraged to use available cart paths, obey signs and roped directions and keep up with the group in front at all times. As we always say fill in your Divots and Pitch marks and this will assist in not having preferred lies. It s winter and grass does not grow in winter. New signage on the Golf course in various areas is there to assist you. From the Greens Committee Not much is happening in the winter, maintenance time, back to normal at the end of August / September. Greens Tees and Fairways will have their 6 monthly renovations starting on Sunday 27th August 2017 Temporary greens will be in place for that week, please assist the greens staff where necessary. Thanks. As we mentioned last month please Give way to Greens Staff Bunkers on the 7th hole have had Flat Mega-Flow drainage pipes to the lower part of the fairway now completed. All bunkers are being reshaped, reviewing all other bunker that may need extra sand and draining to be reviewed as required. Everglades new web site. Hate playing in the rain? Hate trying to get on to the pro shop, along with hundreds of other members to find out whether the course is open, whether carts are allowed etc etc. The club recently updated the web site and has, as a service to members and golfers in general, included a Course Conditions segment which provides a snapshot of whether the course is open etc. Simply go to everglades.net.au on the home page click on GOLF, scroll down the page and on the left side you will come to a section designated Course Conditions. Listed in this section you will find details that will help you decide whether play is possible. From the Course Superintendent May registered only 45mm of precipitation on course, while keeping with tradition, the June long weekend delivered 190mm of rain over a 5-day period from 7th to the 11th. Very unfortunate for those golfers who were keen to get a couple of games in over that period. The total for June as at 20/06 stands at 208mm. Construction The entire new 2nd hole is growing in well and maturing at a steady, consistent pace. The new green is firming up by the week and the fairway, surrounds and rough are thickening up as planned. 1. New mounds protecting the back of the 6th green have been constructed and turfed as per design plan. The mounds also shape the new extension of the 2nd hole, guiding golfers towards the new green. 2. Bunker matting/liner has been installed on the faces of the bunkers to prevent ball plugging. Sand for these bunkers will be add in July. 3. That leaves the only job to complete, being the demolition and shaping of the existing 2nd green, at this stage it is looking to be undertaken early to mid- August. 4. Bitumen pathway has now been installed aligning the new green feeding golfers to the 3rd tee. Special dates to Remember Everglades Golf Section Annual General Meeting Monday 23rd October 2017 Star room: 7.00 PM Everglades Country Club Annual General Meeting Main Auditorium: 9.00 AM Sunday 29rd October 2017 Dates to Remember 5th August th August 27th August 2nd September 3rd September 5. The soil pile that was to the rear of the existing 2nd green has been shaped and the excess soil removed. I have provided a rough shape of what behind the green will look like once the old green is removed. Flat mega-flow drainage has been installed into bunkers of the 7th green Following heavy rain, these bunkers are always the last to drain and remain wet for some time after. Height of cut on greens remains at 3.3mm. Tees 16 mm and Fairways 15mm From the Social Committee.
