Get extra money while you are a student Apply for a scholarship from Liverpool John Moores University
The prestige of being awarded a scholarship is priceless. It made me feel like the University really wanted me. John Anwyll, BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering Imagine being awarded an extra 1,000 or 10,000 every year while you re a student. Think of all the things you could do with the money and what a difference it could make to your student experience. All you have to do in order to be considered for this additional money which doesn t have to be paid back is complete and return LJMU s Scholarship application form. It s as easy as that. We believe you are worth investing in. You should too. Complete one form and boost your student finances We don t just award our scholarships to straight A students, though academic ability is obviously an important consideration. We are more interested in awarding scholarships to students who can show they are hard-working and a success at what they do. So when you are completing your scholarship application form make sure you tell us about your hobbies, your interests and the extra stuff you do, like sports, volunteering, charity work or youth politics. We are interested in finding out what you are passionate about and all the things you are involved with now, in school, college or in your own time. Now is the time to sell yourself and boast about your achievements. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain by completing the scholarship form. So go on. Just do it. You might be surprised by what you get as a result.
Top tips for completing your scholarship application form 1. Don t under sell yourself we want to know about everything you ve been doing in school, college and in your own time. 2. Tell us about any work you do, paid or voluntary and what skills and experiences you have gained as a result. 3. Provide evidence for the things you ve done, such as press cuttings for fundraising events or references from teachers or your employer. 4. Don t miss the deadline for submitting your form if your application arrives late you will not be considered for a scholarship. 5. Contact LJMU s Student Funding Team for advice on how to complete your form: studentadvice@ljmu.ac.uk, /3154 People like you Still think you re not scholarship material? Perhaps these students will make you think differently. Pharmacy student Charlotte Aitchison (19) was awarded the 1,000 annual Community Excellence Scholarship based on her extensive voluntary work and a trip to Madagascar as part of an expedition with World Challenge, which helped her complete her ASDAN Cope level 3 award. I got people to write references for me to prove that I did actually do it. You re not losing anything by applying, so you might as well just go for it because at the end of the day, there s a lot to gain. It doesn t take that long to do, and it s worth it to get the extra money that you don t have to pay back.
Forensic Psychology and Criminal Justice student Ryan Cockrell receives an annual LJMU Vice-Chancellor s Scholarship worth 10,000 for every year of his degree. I was delighted when I found out that I had been awarded the Scholarship. It makes me feel really proud and I would advise other students to apply. I found out I had been awarded the scholarship just a few months after I applied. I was really proud of myself. All my hard work had paid off. I really couldn t believe it. The scholarship has enabled me to buy some of the equipment needed for my course. It has also taken the financial pressure off me as I don t have to get a job. Chloe Hughes, BSc (Hons) Outdoor Education, receives the 1,000 Michael Brown Scholarship for every year of her degree.
Just before I started the course, we found out I d been awarded a scholarship and it was a pleasant surprise. It is an extra thousand pounds each year and it does help a lot. It is worth applying, without a shadow of a doubt. Social work student Jeffrey Bilsborough (47) volunteered at a children s activity centre and in Liverpool City Council s youth department. All of this experience helped him secure the annual 1,000 Community Excellence Scholarship. My coaches said most universities offer some form of scholarship. It really helps with the funding of the practicalities of training. It s really helpful because I didn t have to get an overdraft or ask my mum and dad for some more money. I can sort out my own money, and you don t have to reapply which is excellent. Katie Hesketh (18) is studying Sports Science and was awarded the annual 1,000 Community Excellence Scholarship. A member of the Great Britain Water Polo team, she is also one of the University s elite Sports Scholars.
At the applicant day my mum nudged me and said, That would be great for you, it would make life a lot easier, and I said I ll never get it though, will I?. When I found out I d got the scholarship it was unreal. I was kind of like Wow, this is going to make university a lot easier. Outdoor education graduate, Ross Gardiner (22) first heard about LJMU s scholarships during an applicant day in Northern Ireland. He applied and won the annual 10,000 Vice-Chancellor s Award. Ross is now working as an Outdoor Instructor in Oban, teaching young children how to survive in the wilderness. My brother was like oh scholarships, aren t they only for the best of the best and I wasn t sure if I was going to get it. But I ve always been one of those people who think if it s out there, why not go for it. If you don t ask you don t get, and who says you re out of reach of getting it? Pharmacy student Yasmina Hamdaoui (20) receives the annual 1,000 Academic Excellence Scholarship in recognition of her academic grades and voluntary work in a hospice, at the British Heart Foundation and supporting paired reading.
Rewarding student success When my friends found out I had a scholarship they were gutted they hadn t applied. It gives you the extra money you need to do the things you enjoy. Michael Brown Scholarship winner Hannah Perselli (20) is studying journalism. LJMU scholarships are awarded not just for getting great exam results, though this is obviously important. They are also awarded in recognition of what each student has achieved personally, through voluntary and charity work, school and college activities, in sport, music and much more. Successful students receive a scholarship for each year of their course. n The Vice-Chancellor s Award is a highly prestigious award for outstanding students, who demonstrate both exceptional academic performance plus a level of commitment, excellence and achievement above that of their peers in volunteering, citizenship, sport, performing arts or other activities. Each year LJMU awards a maximum of 6 new awards of 10,000 per year. n Michael Brown Scholarships reward academic excellence and a maximum of 12 new scholarships of 1,000 per year are awarded. n Academic Excellence Scholarships are awarded for excellence in areas such as volunteering, sports, the arts, citizenship. LJMU presents up to a maximum of 100 awards of 1,000 per year. n Community Excellence Scholarships reward academic excellence and LJMU awards a maximum of 100 new scholarships of 1,000 per year. Sports Scholarships Our ground-breaking Sport scholarship scheme for elite athletes has enabled some top sporting stars to take advantage of specially tailored fitness and academic programmes to enable them to study without detracting from their vigorous training regimes. Current scholars (pictured below) include England Netball star Laura Malcolm and British champion gymnast Hannah Whelan, and graduates include Olympian gymnast Beth Tweddle, high jumper Martyn Bernard and 800m runner Michael Rimmer. Only students competing at national or international level are eligible for support. For further information, please contact the Sports Scholarship Manager David McDermott (d.mcdermott@ ljmu.ac.uk).
