2 Installing vpad 1. Request the vpad download from the Downloads section of 2. You will receive an containing a link to download the vpad.dmg. 3. Save this file to your desktop. 4. Once saved to your desktop, double click the vpad.dmg. 5. Click and drag the vpad Application File to the Applications area in the Finder, the Desktop, or any easily accessible location. 6. Once stored in a location, double click the vpad icon. 7. The Turning vpad will be displayed on-screen. Toll-Free: Page 2 of 23

3 Activating Turning vpad There are two ways to license the vpad. If the TurningPoint 2008 USB Receiver is programmed with a Lab Disabled License Code, you will need to license your vpad with a vpad License Code. If the TurningPoint 2008 USB Receiver is programmed with a Lab Enabled License Code you will need to choose the non-activation method on the vpad. To activate the vpad: 1. Click vpad on the menu bar. 2. Click Activate vpad. The vpad software can be activated for All User accounts stored on the computer or just the Current User s account. Administrative privileges are required to activate the vpad software for all user accounts. Activating the vpad for All Users means, that each person who logs onto the computer will not be prompted to go through the activation screen. Activating the current user only, will require activation for the next person to log on to the computer. 3. Choose if you want to activate for All Users or just the Current User account. 4 4. Click Continue. If you have an Internet connection, you can activate Turning vpad using the Activate License over the Web option. If you do not have an Internet connection, choose the Activate License by Phone option and call Turning Technologies Customer Service at Customer Service can be reached from 7 am 9 pm EST Monday through Friday. 5 Activating over the web 1. Choose Activate License over the Web. 2. Click Continue. 3. Enter the 16 character vpad license code and your name & organization. (All fields are required.) 4. Click Continue. Toll-Free: Page 5 of 23

7 Checking Information About vpad 1. Click the vpad button on the menu bar. 2. Choose About vpad. 3. This will show the version number and the license code that was used to activate the vpad. Toll-Free: Page 7 of 23

8 Selecting a Host Computer In order to connect to a host computer, you must enter the IP Address or the computer s friendly name into the vpad with the port number you plan on using to send the response data. A port is a virtual data connection. This connection is how responses are passed from the vpad to the Host Computer. There are different ways to determine the Host Computer s IP Address or Friendly Name. Determining the IP address through the System Preferences on a Mac 1. Click System Preferences from the Dock or in the Apple Menu on the host computer. 2. Under Internet & Network click the Network icon. 3. Click the Drop-down Box next to Show. 4. Select your NIC Card (ex. AirPort ). 5. Click the \TCP/IP button. 6. The IP Address will be displayed. Determining the IP address or friendly name through the TurningPoint software 1. You can also use the TurningPoint software to determine this information. 2. Open TurningPoint 2008 on the host computer. 3. Click Insert Slide on the TurningPoint toolbar. 4. Choose to insert the vpad Log-In slide 5. This will insert a slide that displays the IP address, friendly name and the port number the host computer is using Setting up the vpad Connection 1. Click Connection on the menu bar. 2. Choose Hosts. (Pressing the Shift + Apple + H key combination on your keyboard will also allow you to select a host computer.) 3. This will open a Host menu on the right side of the vpad. Toll-Free: Page 8 of 23

9 4. Click the (+) button to enter the information of a new host computer. 5. Enter the Computer s Friendly Name or IP Address into the field. 6. Enter in the Port Number you wish to use ( ). (The Default port number is 1025 if connecting to a Mac.) 7. Click Save. Once the IP Address and Port number are saved, they will be displayed in the host menu. Toll-Free: Page 9 of 23

10 Connecting to a Host Computer 1. Click the Connect button to the right of the stored host s IP Address or Friendly Name and Port. You can also connect by clicking on the Connection option on the menu bar. Mouse over the Connect to option and the stored hosts will be displayed on the extended menu. 2. The vpad will display Connected when it connects to the host computer. Toll-Free: Page 10 of 23

11 3. After connecting to the host computer, the information will be stored in the Connection option on the menu bar for quick connection. 4. Click the Connection option on the menu bar 5. Choose the Connect to option with the host s IP Address and Port number. (You can also click the Apple + K key combination on the keyboard to quickly connect to the host computer.) TurningPoint for Mac publishes a service that allows the Mac vpad to find, display and connect to the host. The host does, however, need to be on the same network in order for the vpad to discover it. Any Discovered Hosts will be displayed on the Host menu of the vpad. Toll-Free: Page 11 of 23

13 Disconnecting from a Host Computer 1. Click the Connection option on the menu bar. 2. Choose the Disconnect option from the drop down menu. (You can also press the Apple + D key combination on the keyboard to quickly disconnect from the host.) Toll-Free: Page 13 of 23

14 Editing a Host Computer Entry 1. Click Connection on the menu bar 2. Choose Hosts to display the Host side menu on the vpad. (Pressing the Shift + Apple + H key combination on your keyboard will also allow you to select a host computer.) 3. You must be disconnected from the host computer in order to edit host information. 4. Double click the Host Computer that you wish to edit. 5. Enter the computer s Friendly Name or IP Address into the field. 6. Enter in the Port Number you wish to use ( ). (The Default port number is 1025 if connecting to a Mac.) 7. Click Save. 15 Deleting a Host Computer Entry 1. Click Connection on the menu bar 2. Choose Hosts to display the Host side menu on the vpad. 3. Highlight the Host Computer that you wish to delete. 4. Click on the (-) button at the bottom of the Host side menu on the vpad. Toll-Free: Page 15 of 23

16 Determining the Device ID for the vpad There are 3 options for determining Device IDs for vpads. 1. The unique Device ID assigned to each vpad. 2. The User Name of the person who installed the vpad. 3. A custom Device ID that is specified by the user. The Device ID is a unique string of characters that is used to associate a vpad with a particular user. If a presenter wishes to track responses of participants using a Participant List in TurningPoint, the Device ID needs to be added to the Device ID field in the Participant List for each participant. To change this information 1. Click the vpad button on the menu bar 2. Choose Preferences (You can also press the Apple +, (comma) key combination on your keyboard.) The Device ID option is the ID assigned to the vpad. The User Name option uses the log-in name of the person who installed the vpad as the Device ID. The Custom option lets the user type in a custom Device ID. The user can also type in their First and Last Name into the fields. In order to save the information, check the Save Info checkbox. Once you ve entered a Device ID into the Device ID dialog box it will be displayed on the vpad. Toll-Free: Page 16 of 23

18 Responding to TurningPoint Slides There are 3 types of responses that vpad can send during a presentation depending on the type of slide. 1. Single Response will only accept a single valid number Multi-Response allows you to select more than one answer choice (ex ) 3. Text Input Response is used for fill in the blank or essay slides that require the participant to enter in a word or essay response. The type of response that is being accepted by the slide is shown in the status area of the vpad. Submitting a Single Response answer to TurningPoint requires pushing a button 0-9 on the vpad. When you submit a response to a question, a message will appear on the display screen to show it was received and accepted. Only valid responses will be accepted by the TurningPoint software. 19 If a response is made that is not available as an answer on the slide being polled, the following message will appear. Multi-Responses are displayed and stored in the top window until they are submitted by the participant. If only 3 answers are being accepted by the slide being polled, only 3 responses will show on the display screen. For example: If you enter as your response, and then enter the number 5, your screen will then display However, any responses made after the third response will be added to the end of the list and the first response will be removed. When the responses are ready to be submitted, push the Send button on the vpad. Toll-Free: Page 19 of 23

20 The Input window is used to send a Text Input response to a Fill in the Blank or Essay slide that is being polled. Push the Send button on the vpad to submit the response to the host computer. The presenter may want to show a text message to the participants of a presentation. The text message may contain special instructions for the question slide or a note for the vpad user. 21 When the slide is displayed and polling is opened, the presenter s text message will display in the top window of the vpad. The session activity of the vpad can be viewed by the participant by clicking the Display window tab on the vpad. It contains information about the session such as: when the vpad was connected and/or disconnected from the host computer, when responses were sent and received as well as what responses were sent, and displays any User Feedback responses sent from the vpad to the host. 23 User Feedback The? button on the vpad sends user feedback to the presenter during the presentation. User feedback may consist of a question or comment regarding the TurningPoint Question slide. The presenter can then run reports from the session and review the participants questions or comments. To send a comment or question to the presenter 1. Type in your question/comment for the presenter in the Input section of the vpad 2. Click the? button to transmit the question/comment to the TurningPoint software. 3. The top window on the vpad will inform you that the response was received and the User Feedback box on the showbar will increment by 1. Toll-Free: Page 23 of 23
