1 COMD 355-1: Web Development and Design Mr. Chip Stanek Office hours posted Office phone stanekc@evangel.edu This syllabus is a contract. By enrolling in this course, the student agrees on all policies, schedules, and deadlines including test dates. Exceptions will only be made in emergency situations as approved by the professor. This does not include leaving early for any break. Course Description This course is an introduction to interactive communication on the Internet. Class topics will include web page development, HTML, graphic communication, aesthetics of interactive documents, uses of digital audio/video, and other subjects related to web site production. Students will learn and produce projects from Macromedia Dreamweaver, Fireworks, and Flash. Students will attend lectures and demonstrations during class time and may work on assignments and projects using department facilities. Course Objectives 1. Students will be able to define multimedia, explain how it can be used as an effective communication tool, and discuss its impact on future communication technologies. 2. Students will gain an understanding of the uses of internet communication as it relates to education, information, business, and other specialized areas. 3. Students will become familiar with the tools of web development including computer workstations, video and audio editing software, and authoring tools. 4. Students will gain an understanding of proper page layout and effective use of graphic material. 5. Students will become familiar with HTML as an authoring language. 6. Students will be able to produce HTML documents that effectively communicate their intended purpose. Course Textbooks Williams, Robin & Tollett, John. The Non-Designer s Web Book. 3 rd ed. Peachpit Press The student will also need a CD-R to record their midterm and final projects. Course Requirements
2 1. Attendance. Students should attend all class sessions and labs during the semester. Bring text, materials, and syllabus to class. No more than seven absences are allowed before automatic withdrawal from the course. Three tardies = 1 absence. It is not recommended to miss any class period since material presented will not be repeated. 2. Projects Projects which can be completed on the lab computers will be assigned each week. These will test both the skills taught on the software as well as readings and lecture material. If possible, a day will be reserved each week for the student to be able to work on the project. All projects are due at 9 am on the next day of class unless otherwise specified. 3. Web site Critical Analysis - Students will write and turn in a paper of 1 ½ to 2 pages that gives a critical analysis over three websites. 4. Flash site Analysis - Students will write and turn in a paper of 1 ½ to 2 pages that gives a critical analysis over three websites created in Flash. 5. Quizzes - There will be quizzes over each reading and/or notes assigned. They will be given over Angel and will only be available to take for the 24 hours prior to the class the reading has been assigned. Quizzes cannot be made up. 6. Exams There is one official written test at midterm. 7. Mid-term Project -Basic Web Site Project - Each student will hand in related documentation and upload a project comprising of five to eight Web pages with graphics and links. Projects will be evaluated for organization, quality of materials presented, and content appropriateness. A handout with details of this assignment will be given in class. 8. Final Project -Web Site Design Group Project - Students will work in groups to produce a Web site using computer hardware and software available in the classroom. If video or photography equipment is needed, it can be checked out at the TV studio from a workstudy. Each site should be 9 to 15 pages deep using text, graphics, photos, a Flash animation, audio and video. Each group will present their idea to the professor for approval by providing documentation, flow charts, and design storyboards. Groups will save their Web sites on a CD-R as well as upload them to their folder for grading. Hyperlinks to other sites should be listed and be able to connect if Internet access is available. Hypertext and links should work properly within the document. Project will be evaluated for design, content, and organization. Copyrighted materials should not be used without permission. A handout with details of this assignment will be given in class. Late Assignments Late assignments are for lazy procrastinators and will be dealt with as such. Any assignments turned in late can only earn 50% of the assigned points. Assignments will receive no points after one week from when they were assigned. Also, all major assignments given during this course must be completed by the end of the course. It is
3 the student s responsibility to track their grades on Angel. Grades will be posted in a timely manner; if a 0 shows up, it is because the assignment did not get turned in. No cell phones or other electronic devices are allowed in class. If a student s cell phone rings or if they are using them during class, the cell phone becomes the property of the teacher and the student will be asked to leave with a double absence counted against them. So just leave your phones in your room. Grading All major projects must be completed in order to receive a passing grade.
