3 Baghdad s Construction & Real Estate Market Enter a World of Endless Opportunities It is a time of profound but positive change for Iraq, which is set to become one of the fastest-growing economies in the world over the next decade; rebuilding the country s economy is one of the biggest global investment opportunities to emerge in the past 50 years within all sectors. Iraq s Five-Year National Development Plan for targeted an economic growth of 9.4% per year and included around 2,700 projects worth USD 186 billion. However, the economy has grown faster than initially predicted, widening reconstruction and development needs. The Iraqi government recently exempted its citizens from paying interest on real estate loans Within the next 5 years, Iraq will be the prime market in the region with USD 124 billion worth of ongoing and upcoming infrastructure projects, with a USD 15 billion redevelopment budget allocated by the government in 2013 alone. Construction Sector A great frontier opportunity for investors According to the Ministry of Construction and Housing, Iraq plans to spend USD 9.5 billion on roads, bridges and residential projects by the end of 2018, with a budget of USD 1 billion for transport and communication in 2013 alone. As such, more foreign firms are becoming involved to redevelop and build airports and seaports, as well as construct 2,000 KM of rail tracks. Ongoing projects include: 10 hospitals with 200 beds each USD 8 billion on transportation projects, including airports, railways, roads and ports USD 300 million on road plans, including a new six-lane expressway to the Turkish border and 15 new bridges in Baghdad to improve traffic flow across the city

4 Housing Sector Investment spurs massive housing boom Driven by a growing number of middle class families buying properties and a rising demand for housing units, Iraq s real estate market witnessed a massive increase in size and value during the past few years. According to data from the Ministry of Construction and Housing and Ministry of Planning, Iraq suffers from a nationwide deficit of nearly 4 million housing units, requiring the construction of 650,000 units per year in order to accommodate an expected population of 38 million by The strategic National Development Plan , allocated USD 31.6 billion worth of planned spending for new housing developments. However, in the long term, USD 100 billion could be required for housing investments, particularly in the major urban centers. The Ministry of Reconstruction and Housing is currently implementing 57 residential projects worth USD 10 billion across Iraq's provinces.
