4 Two types of seafood certification schemes 1. RECOMMENDATION LISTS provide consumers with a traffic light (red list, yellow list, green list) or similar system to indicate the sustainability, prepared by environmental NGOs such as WWF, the Marine Conservation Society (MCS), Greenpeace Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP) and national government bodies (e.g. NOAA Fisheries US). 2. CERTIFICATION SCHEMES assess status and characteristics of specific production systems and may lead to ecolabel on retail packs. Third party certification schemes include schemes like the ASC. Participants pay for independent, third party assessments against a set of criteria and performance indicators and if successful they are permitted to use the logo. 5 Advantages/ disadvantages of the two types of schemes Recommendation lists: Free! List holder can decided which operation to include and not include. Does not look at details, looks at species groups in a certain region, favors certain production systems. Certification schemes: Costly, time-consuming. Proper assessment of a specific production systems (clearly defined unit e.g. one farm site, cluster of farms, group of farms under same management system). 6 ASC CERTIFICATION ASC: Aquaculture Stewardship Council The ASC is an independent not for profit organization established in 2010 by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and The Sustainable Trade Initiative (IDH) to assure sustainability of aquaculture operations The ASC standards were developed over many years by a series of round table discussions organized around the world. More than 2,000 participated from farms, industry, researchers, scientists and NGO stakeholders. Accessible to all, ensuring small-scale fish farmers can collectively access certification through group certification (available at the end of this year). 7 Compared to many other Ecolabels, ASC has Independence: related to schemes governance: 3 rd party certification, separation of standard holder and certifier. Transparency: opportunity for Stakeholder engagement, report availability. Rigour: Science based, level of detail to cover the complexity and differences. Gathering information, documentation, evidence (Clients responsibility!!) 7. Public review of the draft report 6. Revisions with clients comments and internal technical review 5.
