JOB SUMMARY: The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) works to safeguard the world s seafood supply by promoting the best environmental choice, and is recognised internationally as a ground-breaking and credible solution to the serious environmental problem of overfishing. The MSC acknowledges the need for a local approach in delivery of its strategic objectives, and the Program Director Oceania will lead on delivering MSC s overarching aims and objectives in the region. While the outreach focus will be on the Australia and New Zealand markets, the Program Director Oceania will also be responsible for dealing with client requests from the Western Central Pacific Island nations. The Program Director Oceania will work in collaboration with the other members of the Asia Pacific team across the region, and colleagues based at the MSC s head office in London to deliver a consistent approach to the MSC s target markets. The post will be responsible for outreach to the fishery, supply chain and market sector in the Oceania region, promoting the MSC brand and increasing the support for the programme across a broad range of interest groups including; fisheries and supply chain stakeholders, government representatives, retailers and foodservice companies and partners in the NGO community. Outreach involves making presentations, relationship building and promoting and explaining the MSC concept and certification program to potential clients (fisheries, commercial or other organisations). The Program Director Oceania also has accountability for the MSC s communications activities in the region and for the delivery of the objectives of the regional communications strategy to build consumer awareness of the MSC. The Program Director is also responsible for building and maintaining a network in the policy, scientific and NGO arena. This is aimed at embedding the MSC program into a policy and societal arena to maximise policy, political, scientific and NGO support of the program. The Program Director is also responsible for contributing to activities to attract regional financial resources for the benefit of the MSC program. This fundraising role can be aimed at activities in the Oceania region, as well as activities for the MSC program at large. The Program Director Oceania therefore has responsibility for the Commercial, Fisheries and Communications teams in the region in delivering these objectives. Ultimately the post strives to increase the purchasing opportunities for consumers, by achieving wider availability across the Australian and New Zealand market of certified and labelled product. B. DIMENSIONS OF THE ROLE This is a fulltime position within the MSC. There are direct budget and management responsibilities. The Program Director Oceania line manages the outreach capacity (commercial, fisheries) and two communications staff. The Program Director Oceania will oversee the outreach programmes to fisheries, processors, retailers and foodservice operators, and manage the key relationships with these stakeholder audiences and clients, and will contribute to MSC policy and strategy development. In addition, the Program Director Oceania will be overseeing the development and execution of the communication and marketing in

3 the region, will manage the key engo and policy relationships. Finally, the operational (day to day) management of the office facilities in Sydney will be his/her responsibility they will be supported in this aspect of their role by Corporate Services staff in London, as well as the Regional Office Manager. The Program Director Oceania will coordinate closely with the Asia Pacific Regional Director and HR department in London in the training and the development of staff capacity, teambuilding and team development in the Oceania region. RESPONSIBILITIES (Key Results and Outcomes) The work of the Program Director Oceania is linked to MSC s overarching objectives of: Ensuring the credibility of the MSC Getting fisheries to enter the MSC programme Getting certified product to market Maintaining and building strategic relationships with the MSC s stakeholders Increasing awareness of the MSC Maintaining quality internal systems and processes Ensuring financial security and sustainability of the MSC To achieve these objectives, further defined in the regional log frame, the post holder will perform the following functions either directly or through coordination/leadership of internal teams: Promote the role, credibility and value of the MSC s fishery certification system to Oceania stakeholders, including those in the fisheries sector, commercial markets, governments, research organisations, environmental groups and other relevant agencies. Promote the MSC logo/brand and programme with commercial stakeholders in the Australian and New Zealand market across the seafood supply chain, beginning with the seafood processing industry and ending with the consumer. Provide oral and written advice and suggestions for strengthening and streamlining MSC assessments and procedures through briefings, submissions and reports to MSC staff. Contribute to policy development and strategic course of the MSC organisation. Develop annual work plans in accordance with the ISP; manage Oceania team capacity accordingly and report on progress against these agreed work plans. Undertake and support fundraising activities in the Oceania region when appropriate, in conjunction with corporate Fundraising team. Promote communication, fundraising and visibility opportunities for the MSC executive committee, Corporate Strategy Group and Board of Trustees, wherever possible. Undertake operational activity in relation to their individual skills and experience (commercial, fisheries or communications). As a line manager it is critical that the post holder has the ability to motivate and manage staff effectively, and to foster a positive can-do mind-set among staff in the Oceania office. Key imperatives for this post require the ability to effectively work with and communicate with others, especially in the context of coordinating the team and communication and outreach activities in the Oceania region.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES The post holder will need to be intelligent, confident and people centred, able to develop relationships with people at all levels within the MSC, its governing bodies, certification bodies, stakeholders and potential clients. External interactions require the ability to communicate well with parties that may hold divergent views about the MSC programme. The post holder must be able to grasp complex and intellectually challenging ideas and communicate them to people from diverse backgrounds and cultures. The job requires diplomacy, respect, sensitivity to cultural differences (including languages) and a willingness to listen, learn from and treat people with dignity. The position requires someone who has demonstrated capacity for systematic analyses and exercising sound judgement while strongly promoting team collaboration that builds and maintains high levels of internal organisational excellence, productivity and esprit de corps. This will require frequent communication with the Asia Pacific Regional Director, other colleagues in the Asia Pacific team and regional offices, as well as regular interaction with all other staff within the organisation, and intermittent communications with representatives of the MSC governing bodies. Externally, the position holder must help promote positive and effective relationships with fisheries, companies that are part of the supply chain and stakeholders, and show tenacity to ensure successful outcome in his outreach task. Commercial/Technical Post-graduate degree or equivalent in marketing or international business; or degree or post-graduate degree or equivalent in fisheries or marine conservation biology, or fisheries, natural resources or environmental management. Demonstrated knowledge of fisheries and resource sustainability issues, particularly as they relate to wild capture fisheries and of the Australian and New Zealand seafood industry. Fluent in written and spoken English Excellent communication skills. A good working knowledge of sustainable development, especially as it relates to fisheries and the food sector Computer and IT skills, including the use of standard software packages (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint). Knowledge of the role of eco-labelling. Stakeholder Oriented Demonstrated experience with meeting and/or workgroup organisation and facilitation. Experience working with stakeholders and other external parties, preferably in the fishery and commercial sector. Evidence of an ability to successfully manage relationships with colleagues, stakeholders and collaborators, with a people-centred approach to work is essential. Demonstrated cultural awareness and sensitivity to the diversity of values, views and approaches to issues relevant to the MSC programme.
