Scope - All public and private lands directly managed by FPAC members (i.e. not procured wood) Status - As of December 2004 FPAC members were 2/3rds towards meeting their certification commitment in terms of hectares certified.

6 Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes Solution: Mutual recognition Mutual recognition by the PEFC is a mechanism to provide international endorsement to national / regional forest certification programs. It is a multilateral agreement amongst forest certification schemes which requires the participating schemes to meet certain common requirements / levels A B C A D Common level requirements Can move up in time continuous improvement

11 Certification Programs Respond to Market & Social Pressures SFI Added CoC & % SFI Certified Content; public land requirements, social, worker rights, aboriginal requirements CSA In revision process grappling with performance indicators and impacts on public participation process (input not imposition) ATFS new standards developed, required training for all inspectors, greater C&I alignment group certification FSC refining controlled wood concept (that uncertified component of the wood supply) and also revised CoC & Labelling requirements to increase flow of certified forest products (from segregation to average % methods) PEFC Also revised CoC & Labelling requirements and now require publicly available audit report and public input in audit process Change is in the air!
