12 Why Marketing 1st? Should be developed before the financial analysis have an outlet 1 st! Decisions regarding species, harvest size / volume should be based on a comprehensive market analysis. BOTTOM LINE Why grow it, if you can t sell it? You can t hit the mark without a target!

13 Why is the Business Plan Important to you? Many prospective and existing fish farmers have difficulty obtaining financing. Lenders may not be familiar with aquaculture Adequate planning for the business may help avoid mistakes. Proper planning for the business can also minimize risks associated with the market, production and financing.

18 How long does it take to develop a business plan? A good business plan takes several months to develop. A thorough plan cannot be developed in an hour, a day, or even a week. The plan is only as good as the effort and thought that goes into it. Should be reviewed and updated annually.

22 NCWRC License Process Non-Approved Species: In accordance with the Aquaculture Development Act of 1997 the culture of any aquatic species not approved in the statute is prohibited from propagation and production unless the applicant for the permit first obtains written permission from the NC Wildlife Resources Commission.

23 NCDA License Process I ve applied, what happens next? An authorization coordinator will work with a fisheries biologist in your district, and with regional and state fisheries personnel to review the proposal. Focus is on potential for escapement, and on potential impacts to the existing fish community, other aquatic organisms, aquatic habitat and ongoing management activities if the fish escape. Consideration will also be given to the potential for release of disease organisms and the potential impact on native fish.
