6 Instant messaging and VOIP!! What is Instant Messaging? Instant messaging (IM) is a form of real-time direct text-based communication between two or more people using shared clients.!! Instant Messaging providers:! AOL MSN Yahoo Skype Skype is Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) software that enables individuals and businesses to make free video and voice calls, send instant messages and share files with other Skype users. Users also can use Skype to make low-cost calls to landlines and mobile phones.
7 Social networking!! What is social networking? A social network is an Internet-based platform that allows people with similar interests and activities to interact. Users build a description of themselves on an Internet site and interact with other users colleagues, business contacts, old friends from high school or college, and other groups.
8 Social networking sites!! Facebook The fastest growing network in the U.S.!! Google + A social networking site created by Google.!! Linkedin A social networking tool for business connections.
9 Blogging!! What is Blogging? A blog, short for web log, is a simple Web site format that allows anyone with basic Internet skills to publish content to a Web site. Some blog authors use the tool to share their daily experiences with their family and the world. Some bloggers write about a particular topic of interest like politics, crafts, or dogs.!! WordPress The most popular platform offered in both a format to be hosted on your website, ( or hosted on their site, Blogger Operated by Google, a free platform similar to the hosted Wordpress version above.
10 Micro-blogging!! What is Micro-blogging? Micro-blogging is a web service that allows the subscriber to broadcast short messages to other subscribers of the service. The most popular micro-blogging service, Twitter, limits entries to 140 characters.!! Twitter Twitter is a real-time information network that connects you to the latest information about what you find interesting. Simply find the public streams you find most compelling and follow the conversations. At the heart of Twitter are small bursts of information called tweets. Each tweet is 140 characters in length.
11 Media sharing or file sharing!! Flickr Flickr is an example of an online photo management and sharing application, allowing users to share photos and interact.!! YouTube YouTube is an example of an online video community, allowing millions of people to discover, watch and share originally-created videos, and acts as a distribution platform for original content creators and advertisers large and small.!! Slideshare SlideShare is a business media site for sharing presentations, documents and pdfs. Individuals and organizations upload presentations and documents on topics that interest them.
12 Social media precautions!! Personal Information Check the settings on your social networking sites. Are your phone number and address visible to everyone? What other information is public?!! Contacts Do you know the person asking to be your online "friend"? If not, someone may be trying to gain access to your personal information, including access to your credit card or bank account.!! Passwords Is your password easy for anyone to guess? If so, someone can gain access to your information. Strong passwords contain at least one capital letter, and one number. Ex., John1979, Eagle57!! Visibility What you post on a social media web site could possibly be viewed by everyone, including current or future employers.
13 Activity 1.! Search for and find a blog about the best movies of 2012! How would you continue to get updates from this blog if you liked it?! Does the blog allow you to share it on other social media?! Are there comments from other readers? 2.! Search for and find a movie trailer of your favorite movie or any movie.! What Web site did you find?! Are you able to share the trailer with friends? How?! Are there comments? 3.! Search for and see if you can find the Twitter feed for an actor, political figure, athlete, or celebrity.! How many followers do they have?! When was their last tweet?
14 Next steps!! If you re interested, join a social media Web site such as Facebook or LinkedIn. Search and find friends and colleagues who are already on the site and ask them to join your network.!! Search and view videos or pictures on topics that interest you on a file sharing site. There are many how-to videos if you re looking for help or advice understanding how to, for example, grow roses or build a bookshelf.!! Participate as much or as little as you want.
