Records of notable Conopidae (Diptera) from Turkey. New records of 39 species of Conopidae from Turkey are presented. 16 of these species are recorded from Turkey for the first time. The distributional information for these species is supplemented by additional new Conopid records for the adjacent countries of Azerbaijan, Greece, Iran and Saudi Arabia. Key words. Diptera, Conopidae, faunistic, Azerbaijan, Greece, Turkey, Iran, Saudi-Arabia. Introduction Following the recent collection of a large amount of Conopid material from Turkey it is desirable that the results should be summarized in a faunistic overview for this conspicuous Diptera group. After starting this project, however, it became increasingly obvious that there are still too many unresolved taxonomic problems to allow completion of this work within an acceptable time-frame. We have Turkish material of the genera Melanosoma, Myopa, Physocephala, Thecophora and Zodion which cannot be reliably determined at this time. Revisional taxonomic work has begun and manuscripts are now in press for the genera Myopa and Physocephala which include some of the problematic Turkish material. For the same reason it is difficult to rely on faunistic records for taxonomically difficult species which have been recorded previously for Turkey. The most recent overview is that of CHVÁLA & SMITH (1988) but this paper does not give detailed records or sources. Earlier published records are widely scattered in the literature and it is often hard to be certain which species is being referred to by these authors. The aim of the present work is to summarize the current knowledge for those species which are taxonomically unambiguous. Records of all known specimens are presented for these species, and the distribution of some species is discussed in detail. Taxonomic remarks are added where necessary. For those species with a limited range an overview of the records is given. This paper is presented as a first step towards a faunistic survey of Turkish Conopidae and additional material or records would be warmly welcomed by the authors. Material and Methods The following information is given for the material listed: administrative district (province): number of PP, number of OO (town, village or specific locality, geographical coordinates if available, altitude, date, collector and collection, if not the collection of EMET). The abbreviation for the public collections are: BMNH United Kingdom, London, The Natural History Museum [formerly British Museum (Natural History)]; EMET Turkey, Erzurum, Ataturk Universitesi, Faculty of Agriculture, Entomology Museum; MNHN France, Paris, Muséum National d Histoire Naturelle; NHRS Sweden, Stockholm, Naturhistoriska riksmuseet; NMW Austria, Wien, Naturhistorisches Museum Wien; ZMUM Russia, Moscow, Faunistische Abhandlungen, ISSN , Dresden

2 110 STUKE, HAYAT & ÖZBEK: Records of notable Conopidae (Diptera) from Turkey Moscow State University.Where no other information is given to the contrary, the determination of species is in accordance with that of KRÖBER (1925), together with the additional works of CHVÁLA (1961, 1965) and STUKE (2002). The males of Sicus abdominalis Kröber, 1915, Sicus alpinus Stuke, 2002, Sicus ferrugineus (Linnaeus, 1761) and Sicus fusenensis Ôuchi, 1939 cannot be separated at this time, and only the females of this group are distinct. We have therefore listed all males from this group as belonging to Sicus ferrugineus, since this is the only one of these four species which has been confirmed to date from Turkey on the basis of females. The nomenclature is in accordance with CHVÁLA & SMITH (1988). The species are ordered by subfamilies, and are listed alphabetically within subfamilies. All the new material was collected by means of hand-netting only, with no use of sampling devices such as Malaise traps or coloured pan-traps etc. This may explain why some of the smaller species in genera such as Thecophora, Dalmannia or Zodion may be under-represented. Results Conopinae Brachyceraea brevicornis (Loew, 1847) Artvin: 1P (Yusufeli, Altıparmak, 1100m, 05.VII.1994, leg. R. Hayat, col. Stuke); 1P (Yusufeli, 800m, 07.VII.1992, leg. R. Schmid-Egger, coll. Stuke); 1P (Rhodos, Ixia, IX.1958, leg. Verhoeff, coll. Stuke). The records from Turkey and Greece, together with additional records from Cyprus (Chvála & Smith 1988), mark the western limit of the distribution of this conspicuous species. Conops insignis Loew, 1848 Erzurum: 1P (Çat, 2600m, 11.VIII.1994, leg. E. Yıldırım); 1O (Ilıca, Sorkunlu, 1800m, 30.VII.1998, leg. R. Hayat); 1O (Pasinler, Rabat, 2200m, 15.VIII.1995, leg. E. Conops tomentosus Kröber, 1916 Iğdır: 1P (Aralık, 02.VIII.1997, leg. B. Gül, coll. Stuke, figure 1). This is the first record for Turkey. The species has to date been found only in Turkmenia (locus typicus), Tadschikistan (CHVÁLA & SMITH 1988) and Saudi Arabia (1O, Abu Arish, III.1980, leg. K. M. Guichard, coll. BMNH). This species can easily be identified using the key of KRÖBER (1916, 1925) and the two specimens we have seen accord completely with the original description. Conops vesicularis Linnaeus, 1761 Erzurum: 1O (Oltu, Sütkans, 1700m, 17.VI.1996, leg. G. Tozlu). This is the first record for the Turkish fauna. This species is widely distributed in the south of Asia and south-eastern Europe but is only rarely collected. Additional to the countries where it is recorded by CHVÁLA & SMITH (1988) there are unpublished records from Iran (2PP, Ch. Mahali-o-Bakhtiyari, Sheikhalikhan [Kuhe Karbosh], W of Shar -e Kord, ,4 N, ,4 E, 2650m, 03.VII.2004, leg. J. Ziegler, coll. J. T. Smit, coll. Stuke). Myopa buccata is widely distributed throughout the whole of the Palaearctic region. In some areas it is the most common species of the genus, so it is surprising that this species has not been recorded in Turkey before. Myopa buccata is an extremely variable taxon which may comprise an aggregate of several species. Myopa dorsalis Fabricius, 1794 Artvin: 1O (Şavşat, Karagöl, 1650m, 08.VII.1998, leg. Ö. Myopa pallida has previously been reported by CHVÁLA & SMITH (1988) only from the Caucasus and the species seems to have a very restricted range. The records presented here are the first for Turkey. The above specimens of this rarely reported species have been compared with the Holotype (coll. NMW). Myopa picta Panzer, 1798 Erzurum: 1P, 1O (Campus of Atatürk University, 1850m, 10.VI.1990, leg. VII.1988, ditto); 1P 1O (28.VI.1994, ditto); 1P (17.VII.1992, ditto, coll. Stuke); 1P (Ilıca, Sorkunlu, 1800m, 30.VII.1998, leg. R. Hayat); 1P, 1O (Oltu, 1300m, 18.VII.1989, leg. R. Hayat, 1O, coll. Stuke); 1O (Oltu, Başaklı, 1800m, 01.VI.2000, leg. Ö. Çalmaşur).

8 116 STUKE, HAYAT & ÖZBEK: Records of notable Conopidae (Diptera) from Turkey Myopotta rubripes (Villeneuve, 1909) Erzurum: 1O (Palandöken Mts., Gölet, 2200m, 20.VI.1996, leg. Ö. Çalmaşur). Myopotta rubripes is here reported for the first time from Turkey. Sicus ferrugineus (Linnaeus, 1761) Artvin: 1O (Borçka, Çifteköprü, 320m, 17.VIII.1992, leg. R. Hayat); 1P (Karagöl, 1650m, 15.VIII.1990, leg. R. Hayat); 1P (Şavşat, Karagöl, 1650m, 15.VIII.1990, leg. R. Hayat); 1O (08.VII.1998, leg. L. Gültekin); 3OO (Yusufeli, Altıparmak, 1100m, 05.VII.1994, leg. R. Hayat); Bayburt: 1O (Kop Mt., 2200m, 10.VIII.1991, leg. H. Bostan); 2PP, 1O (13. VIII.1997, leg. Ö. Aslan); 2PP (Şenkaya, 1700m, 03.VII.1990, leg. R. Hayat); 1P (Tortum, Yumaklı, 2300m, 14.VIII.1997, leg. İ. Aslan); Hatay: 1O (Erzin, 100m, , leg. L. Gültekin); Kars: 1O (Sarıkamış, Aras Valley, Karakurt, Şeytangeçmez, 1800m, 04.VI.2000, leg. G. Tozlu). Sicus caucasicus Zimina, O (Sarıkamış, 10.VII.1996, 2150m, leg. G. Tozlu, coll. Stuke). This is the first specimen of this remarkable species from Turkey. Sicus caucasicus has only previously been reported from the Caucasus. The present record marks a new south-western limit of the known distribution. The specimen has been determined using the characters given in the key of STUKE (2002) and has been compared with material determined by Zimina. Sicus nigritarsis Zimina, 1975 Artvin: 1O (Şavşat, Karagöl, 1650m, 15.VIII.1990, leg. R. Hayat); Erzurum: 1O (Ilıca, Sorkunlu, 1800m, 30.VII.1998, leg. R. Hayat, coll. Stuke); 1P (Şenkaya, 1700m, 03.VII.1990, leg. R. Hayat); 1O (Uzundere, Dikyar, 02.VII.1994, leg. İ. Aslan, coll. Stuke). These are the first records of this much overlooked species from Turkey. Sicus nigritarsis is widely distributed in southern Europe and southern Russia, but seems to be rare everywhere. Thecophora atra (Fabricius, 1775) Erzincan: 1O (Bahçe Kültürleri Araştırma Enstitüsü, 1200m, 07.VIII.1990, leg. R. Hayat). Specimens of this genus are under-represented in the material available to date, and it will doubtless be found much more commonly when sought for specifically in the future. The genus Thecophora is taxonomically one of the most difficult in the Conopidae. Whether or not the Turkish species is really identical with European atra cannot be decided for certain until more material is available. Thecophora distincta (Wiedemann, 1824) Ankara: 1P (Central, 850m, 31.VII.1997, leg. S. Aşar). Thecophora fulvipes (Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830) Erzurum: 1P (Pasinler, 1700m, 11.VII.1996, 1P, leg. İ. Aslan). This is the first record of this species from Turkey. Thecophora pusilla (Meigen, 1824) Erzurum: 1O (Narman, 1700m, 19.VIII.1992, leg. R. Hayat); Yozgat: 1O (Boğazlıyan, 1300m, 26.VII.1994, 1O, leg. D. Öztürk). Zodion cinereum (Fabricius, 1794) Bayburt: 1P, 1O (Demirözü, 1800m, 30.VII.1992, leg. H. Bostan); 1O (Kop Mt., 2200m, 12.VII.1992, leg H. Bostan); Bingöl: 1O (Solhan, 2100m, 25.V.2000, leg. M. Kesdek); Burdur: 1O (Aksu Valley,S Kargi N Antalya, N, E, 160m, 18.IV.2001, leg. Lange

9 117 & Ziegler, coll. Humboldt Universität Berlin); Erzincan: 1P (Ahmetli, 1300m, 09.VIII.1990, leg. R. Hayat); Erzurum: 1O (Campus of Atatürk Univeristy, 1850m, 15.VII.1996, leg. R. Hayat); 1P (Dumlu, Köşk, 1800m, 20.VI.1996, leg. R. Hayat); 1P, 1O (Oltu, 1300m, 07.VI.1988, leg. R. Hayat); 1P (Oltu, 27.V.1994, leg. R. Hayat); 1P (18.VI.1996, leg. G. Tozlu); 2OO (Pasinler, Rabat, 2400m, 13.VI.1996, leg. G. Tozlu); Konya: 1P (Beyşehir, Gökçimen, 1050m, 31.VII.1997, leg. F. Aydın); 1P (Central, 11.VI.1971, leg. K. Warncke, coll. Stuke); 1P, 1O (Güneydere, Erenler Dağları, WNW Hatunsaray, SSW Konya, 1200m, N, E, 21.V.1998, leg. Lange & Ziegler, coll. Stuke); Muğla: 1P (1km W of Köycegiz, UTM PA49.5m asl, leg. M. Reemer, coll. Stuke). Zodion cinereum is widely distributed in the Palaearctic region. The taxon is quite variable and may include several as yet unrecognized species. Zodion erythrurum Rondani, 1865 Bayburt: 1O (Central, 1700m, 21.VI.1992, leg. H. Bostan); 1P, 1O (Demirözü, 1800m, 04.VI.1992, leg. H. Bostan); Erzurum: 1P (Dumlu, Köşk, 1800m, 20.VI.1996, leg. R. Hayat). Zodion notatum (Meigen, 1804) Erzurum: 1O (Pasinler, Rabat, 2400m, 10.VII.1997, leg. E. Kılıç). Zodion notatum has not been recorded amongst the Turkish fauna before. Possibly this taxon represents only a small dark form of Zodion cinereum. Acknowledgements The authors express their sincere thanks to all of the named collectors. Martin Hauser (Urbana), Dr. Christian Schmid-Egger (München) and Dr. Joachim Ziegler (Berlin) gave material from adjacent regions that have been referred to here. The loan of type material was possible through the help of Peter Sehnal (NMW), Dr. Andrey L. Ozerov (ZMUM) and Dr. Christophe Daugeron (MNHN). The authors also thank their colleagues Dr. E.
