1 June 2015 Issue 8 Welcome from the Akdeniz University International Relations Office 1

2 Dear Colleagues, Welcome to the eighth issue of the Akdeniz University International Relations Office (IRO) Newsletter. The IRO newsletter has been prepared in order to disseminate news concerning the IRO, and it has been published every 3 months since September The IRO newsletter covers news about exchanges, trainings, projects, visits, events and announcements, and it is aimed at students, alumni and partner universities around the world. Since March 2015, when the seventh issue of the IRO newsletter was published, the IRO has experienced an intensive working agenda. The Cultural Counsellor at the French Embassy in Ankara, Olivier Ramadour, visited Akdeniz University and, as a result of the visit of the delegation from Shendi University in Sudan, a Mevlana Exchange Programme Protocol has been signed between Akdeniz University and Shendi University. Within the scope of the 18 th International Mediterranean Youth Festival we welcomed many young people from every corner of the world to take part in an event of great artistic and cultural significance. The IRO represented Akdeniz University at international education fairs held in Azerbaijan and the United States of America, and our participation in the 2015 EUA Annual Conference and ERACON 2015 allowed us the opportunity to meet colleagues from other universities attending the fair, and the chance to extend our network. We organized our International Staff Week and the Exchange Coordinators Academy, in which we shared our knowledge and experience of the Erasmus+ Programme and the Mevlana Exchange Programme. While we have been preparing the content of this newsletter, we have received good news regarding our success in the Mevlana Exchange Programme. According to statistics published by the Higher Education Council, Akdeniz University achieved first position during the 2013/2014 academic year among universities implementing the programme in Turkey in the following categories of mobility; the number of outgoing students from Turkey, of incoming students to Turkey, of outgoing academic staff members from Turkey, and incoming academic staff members to Turkey. As the Head of the International Relations Office, I would like to sincerely thank all the members of the International Relations Office staff one by one for their best efforts to manage all these activities successfully. On behalf of all the members of the IRO team, I would like to offer you our most sincere regards. Prof. Dr. Burhan Ozkan Advisor to the Rector Head of the International Relations Office Akdeniz University 2

3 Akdeniz University Becomes First in Mevlana Exchange Programme The Mevlana Exchange Programme was initiated by the Higher Education Council (YÖK) during the 2013/2014 academic year, and put into operation by the International Relations Office of Akdeniz University in the same year. According to statistics published by the Higher Education Council, Akdeniz University achieved first position during the 2013/2014 academic year among universities operating the programme in Turkey in the following categories of mobility; the number of outgoing students from Turkey, of incoming students to Turkey, of outgoing academic staff members from Turkey, and incoming academic staff members to Turkey. This has resulted in Akdeniz University achieving the highest level of mobility and the highest number of total exchanges among all Turkish universities in the programme. Akdeniz University was a pioneer among Turkish universities in introducing the programme, and in the 2014/2015 academic year we were able to welcome 122 academic staff members and lecturers from a wide range of countries in many different parts of the world including the United States, Azerbaijan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, China, Palestine, Korea, India, Japan, Montenegro, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, Pakistan, Russia, Serbia and Sri Lanka. During this time we have also sent 154 students and members of our own academic staff out to do exchanges in other countries. Higher education institutions in EU countries which benefits from being part of the Erasmus Programme cannot take part in the Mevlana Exchange Programme. The International Relations Office is committed to continuing our participation in the Mevlana Exchange Programme in the 2015/2016 academic year, and we look forward to welcoming many more incoming students and staff members, as well as sending out our own students and staff members to teach and study abroad. At present we have signed Mevlana Exchange Programme Protocols with 54 different foreign higher education institutions in 23 different countries; the United States, Albania, Azerbaijan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Djibouti, China, Palestine, Korea, Georgia, India, Japan, Montenegro, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, Mexico, Pakistan, Russia, Serbia, Sudan, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Ukraine. 3
