1 QUICK Source Microsoft Windows Vista Business Getting Started The Windows Vista Desktop Icon links to a program, file, or folder that is stored on the desktop. Shortcut Icon links to a program, file, or folder that is stored in other sections of the computer. Start Menu displays shortcuts to all programs, as well as the most frequently used folders and features. Quick Launch Bar provides single-click access to programs, files, and folders. Taskbar displays buttons and icons to help you navigate in Windows. Sidebar contains quick access to continuously updated programs. Recycle Bin contains deleted files. Notification Area contains icons for active and urgent notifications, as well as sound controls and the current time. Using the Taskbar To change what is displayed on the Taskbar, right-click the Taskbar, select Toolbars, and select a toolbar from the shortcut menu. To change Taskbar properties, right-click the Taskbar, and select Properties from the Make selections and click the OK button. To lock or unlock the Taskbar, right-click the Taskbar and select Lock the Taskbar from the To move the Taskbar, unlock the Taskbar. Click and drag the Taskbar to the top, bottom, or side of the desktop. To display hidden icons in the notification area, click the Show hidden icons button. Using Live Thumbnails To view the content of a window, rest your mouse pointer on the taskbar button and a live thumbnail will appear displaying the window. Note: The window does not need to be minimized to display a live thumbnail. Using the Start Menu Click the Start button to display the Start menu. Pinned Items List contains shortcuts to programs that you have pinned to the Start menu. Most Frequently Used Programs List contains shortcuts to the programs you use most frequently. All Programs contains shortcuts to all programs on your computer. Search Box allows you to quickly search your programs and personal folders. Right Pane contains shortcuts to folders, programs, and features. Power Button allows you to put your computer to sleep. Lock Button allows you to lock your computer without turning it off. Working with Windows To switch between open windows, hold the Alt key and press the Tab key to scroll through thumbnails of the open windows. Release the tab key to open the window. You can also click the Switch between windows button on the Quick Launch Bar. Press the right arrow key to scroll through previews of the open windows and press the Enter key to open the window. To minimize all open windows and show the desktop, click the Show desktop button on the Quick Launch Bar. To arrange open windows, right-click the Taskbar and select Cascade Windows, Show Windows Stacked, or Show Windows Side by Side from the Using the Sidebar To close the Sidebar, right-click in the Sidebar and select Close Sidebar from the To open the Sidebar, click once on the Windows Sidebar icon in the Notification Area. To add a gadget to the Sidebar, right-click in the Sidebar and select Add Gadgets from the Double-click the gadget you want to add. Click the Close button. To move a gadget, click and drag the gadget to a new location in the Sidebar. To change Sidebar options, right-click in the Sidebar and select Properties from the Make selections and click the OK button. Putting Your Computer to Sleep When you put your computer to sleep, Windows will save your work and lock your computer. 2. Click the Power button. Note: To completely shut down your computer, click the Start button. Click the arrow next to the Lock button and select Shut Down from the resulting menu. 1

2 Files & Folders Files & Folders The Windows Vista Folder Window Renaming a File or Folder 1. Select the file or folder you want to rename. 2. Click the Organize button on the toolbar. 3. Select Rename from the resulting menu. 4. Enter a new name for the folder and press the Enter key. Deleting a File or Folder 1. Select the file or folder you want to delete. 3. Select Delete from the resulting menu. 4. Click the Yes button to confirm deletion. Address Bar displays the folder navigation. Forward and Back Buttons allow you to navigate to folders that you have already opened. Toolbar contains shortcuts for working with the folder or selected item. Navigation Pane contains shortcuts to the Folders list and commonly used folders. Details Pane displays the properties of the folder. Search Box allows you to quickly search the current folder. File List displays the contents of the current folder or selected item. Navigating in a Folder Window To go back to a previously opened folder, click the Back button. To go forward to a previously opened folder, click the Forward button. To go to a recently opened folder, click the Recent Pages arrow and select a folder from the resulting menu. To go to a commonly used folder, select a folder in the Favorite Links section of the Navigation Pane. To go to a folder or location displayed in the Address Bar, click once on the folder or location name. To go to a subfolder of a folder displayed in the Address Bar, click on the arrow next to the folder name and select a subfolder from the resulting menu. Using the Navigation Pane To view all folders on your computer, click the Folders shortcut at the bottom of the Navigation Pane. To add a folder to the Favorite Links section, select the folder you want to add and drag it to the Favorite Links section of the Navigation Pane. To remove a folder from the Favorite Links section, right-click the link in the Navigation Pane and select Remove Link from the Click the Yes button to confirm that you want to remove the link. Creating a New Folder 1. Open the folder that you want to create the new folder in. 3. Select New Folder from the resulting menu. 4. Enter a name for the folder and press the Enter key. Hiding a File or Folder 1. Select the file or folder you want to hide. 3. Select Properties from the resulting menu. 4. Check the Hidden box. (If a dialog box appears, select whether you want to apply the change to the folder only or to all files and subfolders and click the OK button.) ing a File or Folder 1. Using the Personal Folder The personal folder contains common folders and is named with the user name for your computer. To open the personal folder, click the Start button and select your user name in the right pane. Changing the Folder View 1. Open the folder you want to change the view for. 2. Click the arrow on the Views button on the toolbar. 3. Select a view from the resulting menu, or click and drag the slider until the folder view you want is displayed. Note: To quickly change the folder view, click the Views button on the toolbar until the view you want is displayed. Changing Folder Options 1. Open the folder you want to change options for. 3. Select Folder and Search Options from the resulting menu. 4. On the General tab, make selections. 5. Optional: Click on the View tab and make additional selections. 6. Click the OK button when you are finished. Note: To hide or display folder layout features such as the Menu Bar, click the Organize button on the toolbar, select Layout, and select an option from the resulting menu. 2

3 Searching & Personalizing Searching Searching for an Item on Your Computer 2. Select Search in the right pane of the Start menu. 3. Optional: To narrow your search to specific types of items, click a button in the Show only section of the Search pane. 4. Optional: For additional search options, click the Show advanced filters button and make selections. 5. Enter what you want to search for in the Type to search the current view box. (The results will be displayed in the File list.) 6. Click the Close button when you are finished. Searching for an Item in a Folder 1. Open the folder you want to search. 2. Enter what you want to search for in the Type to search the current view box. (The results will be displayed in the File list.) 3. Optional: To return to the folder view, select the text in the Type to search the current view box and press the Delete key. 4. Click the Close button when you are finished. Using Instant Search 2. Enter what you want to search for in the Search box. (The results will appear in the Start menu.) 3. Optional: To view results in the Search window, click the See all results shortcut. Click the Close button when you are finished. Saving Search Results 1. Search for an item on your computer or in a folder. 2. Click the Save Search button on the toolbar. 3. Enter a name for the search folder in the File name box or leave the default name. 4. Click the Save button. Opening a Search Folder Search folders contain default searches and searches that you have saved. 1. Open a folder. 2. Click the Searches shortcut in the Favorite Links section of the Navigation Pane. 3. Double-click the search folder you want to open. 4. Click the Close button when you are finished. Personalizing Changing the Window Color 2. Click the Window Color and Appearance shortcut. 3. Select the color you want. 4. Optional: Check or clear the Enable transparency box. 5. Optional: Click and drag the Color intensity slider. 6. Click the OK button. 7. Click the Close button. Note: You can also access personalization options in the Control Panel. Changing the Desktop Background 1. Right-click the Desktop and select Personalize from the 2. Click the Desktop Background shortcut. 3. Click the arrow on the Picture Location box and select a folder from the resulting menu. (If the folder you want is not in the list, click the Browse button. Locate and select a picture in the folder you want and click the Open button.) 4. Select the picture you want in the box. 5. Optional: Select an option in the How should the picture be positioned section. 6. Click the OK button. 7. Click the Close button. Applying a Screen Saver 2. Click the Screen Saver shortcut. 3. Click the arrow on the Screen saver box and select a screen saver from the resulting menu. 4. Enter or select the amount of time you want the computer to be idle before the screen saver will start in the Wait box. Working with Sounds 2. Click the Sounds shortcut. 3. Do one of the following: To change the sound scheme, click the arrow on the Sound Scheme box and select a sound scheme from the resulting menu. To change the sound for a particular action, select the action in the Program box. Click the arrow on the Sounds box and select a sound from the resulting menu. 4. Optional: Check or clear the Play Windows Startup sound box. Changing Mouse Pointers 2. Click the Mouse Pointers shortcut. 3. Click the arrow on the Scheme box and select a pointer scheme from the resulting menu. 4. Optional: To change mouse pointer options, click on the Pointer Options tab and make selections. Applying a Theme 2. Click the Theme shortcut. 3. Click the arrow on the Theme box and select a theme from the resulting menu. 4. Click the OK button. 5. Click the Close button. 3

4 Sharing & Programs Sharing Sharing a Folder 1. Open the folder you want to share. 2. Click the Share button on the toolbar. 3. Enter the user name of the person you want to share the folder with. 4. Click the Add button. 5. Optional: Repeat steps 3 and 4 to add more users. 6. Optional: To change the permission level for a user, click the arrow on the level in the Permission Level column and select a level from the resulting menu. 7. Click the Share button. 8. Click the Done button. Note: To stop sharing a folder, select the folder and click the Share button on the toolbar. Click the Stop sharing shortcut and click the Done button. Working with the Public Folder The Public folder allows you to share files with people who use your computer and people on your network. A link to the Public folder is displayed by default in the Favorite Links section of the Navigation Pane in a folder window. Click once on the link to view the subfolders. Note: To share a file or folder in the Public folder, copy or move the file or folder to the Public folder or one of its subfolders. Setting Up Windows Meeting Space 2. Select All Programs from the Start menu. 3. Select Windows Meeting Space. 4. Click the Yes, continue setting up Windows Meeting Space shortcut. 5. Make selections in the People Near Me dialog box. 6. Click the OK button. Creating a Meeting in Windows Meeting Space 2. Select All Programs from the Start menu. 3. Select Windows Meeting Space. 4. Click the Start a new meeting shortcut. 5. Enter a name for the meeting in the Meeting name box or leave the default name. 6. Enter a password for the meeting in the Password box. 7. Click the Create a meeting button. 8. Click the Invite people shortcut. 9. Check the boxes next to the users you want to invite. 10. Click the Send Invitations button. 11. Optional: To display programs on your computer or your desktop, click the Share a program or your desktop shortcut. Select what you want to share and click the Share button. 12. When you are finished with the meeting, click the Meeting Menu button on toolbar. 13. Select Exit from the resulting menu. Programs Creating a Shortcut to a Program 2. Select All Programs from the Start menu. 3. Right-click the program you want to create a shortcut for. 4. Select Send To. 5. Select Desktop (create shortcut) from the resulting menu. Setting a Default Program 2. Select Control Panel in the right pane of the Start menu. 3. Click the Programs shortcut. 4. Click the Default Programs shortcut. 5. Click the Set your default programs shortcut. 6. Select the program you want in the Programs box. 7. Do one of the following: To set the program as the default for all file types, select Set this program as default. To choose which file types the program should be the default for, select Choose defaults for this program. Check the boxes for the file types you want to choose and click the Save button. 8. Click the OK button. 9. Click the Close button. Associating a File with a Program 3. Click the Programs shortcut. 4. Click the Default Programs shortcut. 5. Click the Associate a file type or protocol with a program shortcut. 6. Select the file type you want to change. 7. Click the Change program button. 8. Select the program you want to open the selected file type with. 9. Click the OK button. 10. Click the Close button. 11. Click the Close button. Note: To quickly associate a file with a program, right-click the file, select Open With, and select Choose Default Program from the Select the program you want to open the file type with and check the Always use the selected program to open this kind of file box. Click the OK button. Using the Program Compatibility Wizard Use the Program Compatibility Wizard to determine if older programs will run on Windows Vista. 3. Click the Programs shortcut. 4. Click the Use an older program with this version of Windows shortcut under Programs and Features. 5. Follow the instructions provided by the wizard. 6. Click the Finish button to exit the wizard. Pinning a Program to the Start Menu When you pin a program to the Start menu it will always appear in the top-left pane of the Start menu. 2. Select All Programs. 3. Right-click the program that you want to pin to the Start menu. 4. Select Pin to Start Menu from the Note: To remove an item from the Start menu, click the Start button, right-click the item you want to remove in the left pane, and select Remove from this list from the 4

5 Security & Extras Security Checking Security Settings If your computer is not part of a network you can check your security settings in the Security Center. 4. Click the Security Center shortcut. 5. Click the Close button when you are finished to close all remaining open windows. Changing Windows Firewall Settings Windows Firewall helps stop harmful users or software from getting access to your computer. 4. Click the Windows Firewall shortcut. 5. Click the Change settings shortcut. 6. Make selections in the Windows Firewall Settings box. 7. Optional: To allow programs through the firewall, click on the Exceptions tab and check the boxes next to the programs you want to allow. 8. Click the OK button. 9. Click the Close button to close all remaining open windows. Working with Automatic Updating 4. Click the Windows Update shortcut. 5. In the left pane, do any of the following: To check for updates for your computer, click the Check for updates shortcut. To install the updates, click the Install updates button. To change automatic updating settings, click the Change settings shortcut. Make selections and click the OK button. To display update history, click the View update history shortcut. Click the OK button when you are finished. Working with Windows Defender Windows Defender helps protect your computer against unwanted software by automatically scanning your computer. 4. Click the Windows Defender shortcut. 5. Do any of the following: To manually scan your computer, click the Scan your computer shortcut at the top of the window. To change the setting for automatically scanning, click the Tools shortcut at the top of the window. Click the Options shortcut. Make changes in the Automatic scanning section and click the Save button. To view scanning history, click the History shortcut at the top of the window. To return to the Windows Defender home page, click the Home shortcut at the top of the window. 6. Click the Close button to close all remaining open windows. Using User Account Control User Account Control is a new feature to Windows Vista that prevents unauthorized changes to your computer. When you try to make certain changes, the User Account Control dialog box will appear asking for your permission to continue or asking you for an administrator password. Follow the directions in the box to continue making changes. Extras Using the Welcome Center The Welcome Center appears by default when you start Windows Vista. It contains quick links to Windows tools and Help as well as online offers from Microsoft. To access the Welcome Center when you are working in Windows, click the Start button and select Control Panel in the right pane of the Start menu. Click the System and Maintenance shortcut and click the Welcome Center shortcut. Note: If you do not want the Welcome Center to appear when you start Windows, clear the Run at Startup box. Restoring a Deleted Item 1. Double-click the Recycle Bin icon on the desktop. 2. Do one of the following: To restore an item, select the item and click the Restore this item button on the toolbar. To restore all items in the recycle bin, click the Restore all items button on the toolbar. 3. Click the Close button when you are finished. Note: To permanently delete all items in the recycle bin, click the Empty the Recycle Bin button on the toolbar. Click the Yes button to confirm deletion. Creating a Shortcut to a File or Folder 1. Right-click the desktop. 2. Select New and select Shortcut from the resulting menu. 3. Click the Browse button. 4. Select the file or folder you want to create a shortcut for. 6. Getting Online Help When you are connected to the Internet, the most up to date information will be displayed when you search for Help. 1. Click the Offline Help button at the bottomright corner of the Windows Help and Support window. 2. Select Get online Help from the resulting menu. Navigating in the Windows Help and Support Center 2. Select Help and Support in the right pane of the Start menu. 3. Do any of the following: To navigate through previously viewed topics, click the Back and Forward buttons on the toolbar. To return to Windows Help and Support home, click the Help and Support home button on the toolbar. Note: To change the size of text in the Help and Support window, click the Options button on the toolbar, select Text Size, and select a text size from the resulting menu. Using Windows Remote Assistance Use Windows Remote Assistance to invite someone to access your computer and help you fix a problem. 2. Select Help and Support in the right pane of the Start menu. 3. Click the Ask someone or expand your search button on the toolbar. 4. Click the Windows Remote Assistance shortcut in the Ask someone section. 5. Select Invite someone you trust to help you. 6. Select Use to send an invitation. 7. Enter a password in the Password box. 8. Enter the password again in the Retype the password box. 9. Click the Next button. 10. Enter the recipient s address in the To box. 11. Click the Send button. (The Windows Remote Assistance box will appear to show you the status of remote help. Click the buttons in the box to manage the session.) Using Windows Online 1. Click the Help and Support home button on the toolbar. 2. Click the Windows Online Help shortcut in the Find an answer section. 3. Select a shortcut in the Find answers section. 4. Click on a topic to view Help information. 5. Select print options. 4. Click the Print button to print the topic.
