2 Google Sites How to create a site using Google Sites 1. Creating a Google Site To create a Google Site, go to You will be taken to the ETSU Goldmail Sign In page. You will sign in with your Goldmail account. Once you sign in, you will be redirected to the Google Sites home page. On the home page, click on Create Site to get started building your Google Site. 2. Choose a Template Select a template to quickly build your site. You can choose a blank template or select one from the gallery. You are able to change the design and content of the template at any time. 2

3 3. Name Your Site Your site will need a name. Type in the name you want into the box. The name will also be your sites default URL. To change the URL name, click inside the URL box and type in the URL name you want. 4. Choose A Theme You can select a theme for your site. A theme will help all your pages have the same look. Keep in mind that if you choose a theme, then it will replace the look of your template, but will keep the layout of the template. You can always go back and change the look of your site by selecting a new template or theme. 5. Add Site Categories and Descriptions Under the More Options tab, you can add site categories and a site description. You can also decide who can view your Google Site. 6. Launch Your Google Site When you are done making your selections and are happy with your site, simply click on Create Site to launch your site. Once your site has been launched, you can edit the content on the pages and make it your own. 3

4 Making Changes to Your Google Site 1. How To Change Your Template To change your sites template or theme, click on the More Actions tab in the upper right hand corner of your site. Next, on the pull down menu, click on Manage Site 4

5 Then click on Themes, which is located at the bottom of the left hand navigation. Next, you can choose a theme from the list or you can select a new template by clicking on the Browse more themes link in the upper-right side of the page. 5

6 If you click on the Browse more themes link, you will see a list of templates to choose from. Once you find a template you want, simply just click on it. Once you have chosen a new template, you can click preview to see what it will look like on your site. If you are satisfied with the preview, then click Select. After you hit Select, it will take you back to the Manage Site page. A preview of your site will appear. You will also be able to Edit Colors and Fonts if you desire. Once you are happy with the appearance, hit Save Changes. 6

7 After you click Save Changes, click on Return to Site (located in the upper-left hand corner) to go back to your Google Site How to Change Your Sites Name 1. From your home page in Google sites, click on the More Actions link in the top right hand corner of the page. 7

8 2. Next, on the pull down menu, click on Manage Site. 3. Next, click on the General tab under the section called Site Settings. 4. To change the name of your site, type in the new name in the space called Site Name, which is located at the top of the page. 8

9 5. Once you have changed the sites name, click on Save Changes at the top of the page. A yellow box will appear at the top of the page that will say Your changes have been saved. Click on Return to Site once you are ready to go back to your home site. **Note: You can also change your Site Category and Site Description under the General tab.** How to Delete Your Google Site 1. To delete your Google Site, click on More Actions from your home page. 9

10 2. Next, on the drop down menu, click on Manage Site. 3. Next, click on the General tab under the section called Site Settings. 10

11 4. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the link Delete this site. 5. Once you have clicked the link to Delete this Site, a confirmation box will pop up to make sure you do want to delete the site. (Be aware that once you delete your site, you will not be able to retrieve it.) If you are sure you want to delete the site, click on the Delete button. 11

12 How to Change Your Sites Layout 1. To change the layout of your site, click on the Edit Page tab at the top right hand corner of the page. 2. To move gadgets around on your page, scroll over the item you want moved and click and drag the gadget to the spot you want it. 3. To change the columns on your page, click on the Layout tab in the upper left hand corner of the page. 12

13 4. Next, click on the type of column you want for your site. 5. Once you have selected your column, you can arrange your gadgets on your page How to Add a Gadget to Your Google Site 1. To insert a Gadget into your Google Site, click on the Edit Page tab at the top right hand corner of the page. 13

14 2. Next, click on the Insert tab at the top left hand corner of the page. Select a gadget from the drop down menu or click on the More Gadgets link located at the bottom of the drop down menu. 3. If you chose More Gadgets, a box will pop up for you to browse for a Gadget. 14

15 4. Once you have chosen a gadget for your site, click on it and then click select. A box will pop up that will allow you to change the way the gadget is displayed. You can preview your gadget or select Ok when you are done. 5. After you hit Ok, you will be taken back to the edit page. You can now move your gadget to the spot you want it. When you are done making changes to the page, click on the Save tab at the top of the right hand corner of the page. 15

16 How to Edit the Sidebar on Your Site 1. To edit the sidebar on your site, click on the link Edit Sidebar that is located at the bottom of your gadgets at the side of your page. 2. You can edit or delete information that is already on the sidebar or you can click Add a sidebar item to add additional information. 16

17 3. If you want to edit information that is already on your sidebar, click edit in the place you want to make changes. 4. In the pop up box, make your changes and hit Ok. 5. If you want to add a new item to the sidebar, click on Add a sidebar item. You can select the type of gadget you want to add from the pop up box. Once you have selected the gadget you want, click Add. 17

18 6. Your gadget will be added to the bottom of the list on your sidebar. You can move the gadget by clicking and dragging it to the correct place. You will need to go in and edit the information in your gadget. Once you have finished editing, click on Save Changes then Return to Site. How to Rename a Link on Your Sidebar 1. To rename a link on your sidebar, click on the link that you want changed. 18

19 2. Once you are on the page, click on the Edit Page tab in the upper right hand corner of the site. 3. The name of the link is also the title at the top of your page. 4. Click in the area of the title. Now you will be able to change the name. Once you are happy with the new name, click on the Save button at the upper right hand corner of the page. 19

20 5. After you hit Save, your sidebar should be updated How to Create a Page within Your Google Site 1. To create a new page within your Google Site, click on the Create Page tab in the upper right hand corner of your page. 2. Next, you will need to select a template. 20

21 3. After you have selected your template, you will need to name your page and select the location you want the page to be located. (You can add your new page as a top level site; you can place it under the home page or you can choose a different location.) 4. Once you have named your site and selected a location for it, click on Create Page. 5. Your new page should now be located on the sidebar. (You will need to edit the content inside the new page.) 21
