5 3:00-4:30 p.m. Program Session Forward Focused: Opportunities and Imperatives for Master s Prepared Nurses CE Master s education programs in nursing are undergoing rapid change to reflect new roles and expectations of graduates prepared at this level. What do our master s graduates bring to the table, whether in a direct care or indirect care role? Gain perspectives and strategies that will strengthen graduate nursing education and consider new paradigms for what types of roles we need in nursing. Speaker: Joanne Warner, PhD, Dean and Professor, School of Nursing, University of Portland, Portland, OR 4:30-4:45 p.m. Stretch Break 4:45-6:15 p.m. Program Session Why We Need Well-Educated Nurses to Lead the Transformation of Health Care CE Join three respected nurse executives to examine the big picture of the current healthcare system and how roles and functions of all master s prepared nurses are changing, particularly within these healthcare systems. Consider how the graduate Carol Bradley nursing curriculum should reflect the realities of a dynamic and complex healthcare system and what faculty should emphasize to students about their future roles and practice expectations. Speakers: Carol Bradley, MSN, Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer, Legacy Health, Portland, OR; Laura Caramanica, PhD, Chief Nursing Officer, WellStar Kennestone Regional Medical Center, Marietta, GA; and Deborah T. Zimmermann, DNP, Chief Nursing Officer and Vice President of Patient Care Services, Virginia Commonwealth University Health System, Richmond, VA 6:15-7:30 p.m. Reception (cash bar) and Poster Presentations Joanne Warner Laura Caramanica Deborah T. Zimmermann 5

6 Friday, February 27 7:15-8:30 a.m. Light Continental Breakfast and Poster Presentations 7:15 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Exhibits Open 7:30-8:20 a.m. Informal Breakfast Discussions 8:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Concurrent Sessions Participants may attend two of these repeating topics, held 8:30-10:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Sessions are separated by a 30-minute break, and no preregistration is required. Big Data: Wave of the Future or a Fad for Today? CE Big data (or N=all ) is popping up everywhere. Does big data represent a true paradigm shift in the way we access, evaluate, and use information or is it just a fad that will fizzle out in short order? Review this issue in the context of teaching research at the master s level. What students need to know about big data (and little data, too!), how big data aligns with classical statistics, and how data mining may impact patient care interventions and outcomes are all discussed. Speaker: Leslie H. Nicoll, PhD, Editor-in-Chief of CIN: Computers, Informatics, Nursing; Editor of Nurse Author & Editor; and President and Owner, Maine Desk LLC, Portland, ME Clinical Experiences and Preceptorships CE Finding sufficient clinical sites and preceptors is always a challenge in master s nursing education. Hear about the observations and recommendations from AACN s APRN Clinical Training Task Force. Gain ideas about identifying and utilizing the best possible clinical preceptors and consider innovative approaches that maximize clinical experiences. Consider regulations from State Boards of Nursing concerning preceptors and restrictions and rationales at the master s level. Discuss relevant issues including the use of technology, preceptor training, and solutions to barriers to clinical education. Speaker: Laurie M. Lauzon Clabo, PhD, Dean, School of Nursing, MGH Institute of Health Professions, Boston, MA and Chair, AACN s APRN Clinical Training Task Force Integrating Interprofessional Education, Practice, and Collaboration into Master s Education CE What do master s faculty need to know in order to help students effectively work with other professions to improve health care? What are the national priorities and what types of initiatives serve as good models? Gain practical ideas for your own interprofessional education efforts. 6

7 Speakers: Jennifer Danielson, PharmD, Director Experiential Education, Introductory Practice, and Assistant Professor, School of Pharmacy, University of Washington, Seattle, WA; and Mayumi Anne Willgerodt, PhD, Professor, School of Nursing and Health Studies, University of Washington-Bothell, Bothell, WA Findings and Implications from the National Council of State Boards of Nursing Simulation Study CE As the use of clinical simulation expands, questions increasingly are raised about its use to conserve faculty resources, whether simulation should replace traditional clinical hours, which models are preferable, and how much simulation is appropriate. Learn the latest results from a key player in this landmark National Council of State Boards of Nursing study and consider how nurse educators can integrate clinical simulation in nursing education. Speaker: Pamela R. Jeffries, PhD, Professor, School of Nursing, Vice Provost for Digital Initiatives, Office of the Provost, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD and the 2013 recipient of AACN s Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Excellence Award New Strategies for Online Learning CE While online and technology-enhanced instruction has exploded in popularity, schools often transfer traditional content to an online format with many of the same expectations of students. What skills do faculty need in order to be fully successful in an online format? What are the best practices across disciplines? How can we facilitate active participation of and engagement by students? Get pragmatic advice from a valued colleague outside of nursing. Speaker: Tami J. Eggleston, PhD, Associate Dean for Institutional Effectiveness and Professor, College of Arts and Sciences, McKendree University, Lebanon, IL Scholarly Publishing: Economics, Open Access, and Academic Culture CE Scholarly practice is evolving rapidly to include open systems of collaboration and sharing, changing the way scholars create access, review, value, and disseminate new knowledge in their fields. Nowhere is that evolution more evident than in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. During this presentation, emergence of new forms of peer review and publication is described, open access distribution models and their potential to increase the visibility of faculty scholarship is explained, and some of the challenges related to the system of faculty rewards and recognition in a post-print world are identified. Speaker: Lee Van Orsdel, MSLS, Dean, University Libraries, Grand Valley State University, Allendale, MI To IRB, or Not to IRB? That Is the Question! CE Which master s level projects/studies must be reviewed by an Institutional Review Board (IRB)? What if a project involves a quality improvement initiative versus hard research? What if your institution requires all graduate projects to be presented to the IRB? Join three panelists to review the Federal Policy for the Protection of Human Subjects as well as discuss their experiences when facilitating master s projects. 7

8 Speakers: Mary Frances Pate, DSN, Associate Professor, School of Nursing, University of Portland, Portland, OR; Patricia Rouen, PhD, Associate Professor and Program Coordinator, Doctor of Nursing Practice Program, College of Health Professions, McAuley School of Nursing, University of Detroit Mercy, Detroit, MI; and Kimberly A. Udlis, PhD, Associate Professor and Graduate Program Director, School of Nursing, Bellin College, Green Bay, WI 10:00-10:30 a.m. Break and Poster Presentations 10:30 a.m-12:00 p.m. Concurrent Sessions (repeated) 12:00-1:30 p.m. Lunch (on your own) 1:30-4:40 p.m. Abstract Presentations CE This is AACN s version of TEDTalks, whereby presenters have 20 minutes to get their key points across, the audience has five minutes to ask questions, and then the last five minutes of each podium presentation are strictly used as a passing period among rooms in order to attend the next session of interest. All of the abstracts are available online via a specific link ed to registrants one week prior to the event. Presenters are allowed to disseminate handouts if they like; however, their presentations and one-page abstracts are not posted on AACN s general website due to limited capacity. 4:40-5:00 p.m. Stretch Break 5:00-6:00 p.m. Town Hall Meeting with AACN CEO Deborah E. Trautman Come meet AACN s new CEO and exchange ideas about emerging issues and trends of interest to leaders in nursing education, research, and practice. 9 8:30-10:00 a.m. Program Session The DNP by 2015: Findings from the RAND Study on Facilitators and Barriers to the Doctor of Nursing Practice CE In fall 2013, AACN contracted with the RAND Corporation to investigate factors that either facilitate or impede the work underway to transition advanced practice nursing programs to the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP). Join colleagues to hear findings from the report on the transition to the DNP. This session is led by AACN s President-Elect and includes a discussion on how the study s results will shape the work of AACN s Implementation of the DNP Task Force, as well as a response from a renowned practice partner. Speakers: Juliann Sebastian, PhD, Dean and Professor, University of Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha, NE, and President-Elect, AACN, Washington, DC; Sarah Thompson, PhD, Dean and Professor, College of Nursing, University of Colorado, Anschutz Medical Campus, Aurora, CO and Chair, AACN s Implementation of the DNP Task Force; and Tracy E. Williams, DNP (invited), Senior Vice President and System Chief Nursing Officer, Norton Healthcare, Louisville, KY 10:00-10:30 a.m. Break Juliann Sebastian Sarah Thompson Tracy Williams 10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Closing Program Session Institute of Medicine Update: Where Are We Now? Where Should We Be Going? CE The Institute of Medicine (IOM) Committee for The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health (2011) developed four key messages: 1) Nurses should practice to the full extent of their education and training; 2) Nurses should achieve higher levels of education and training through an improved Susan B. Hassmiller education system that promotes seamless academic progression; 3) Nurses should be full partners in redesigning health care in the United States; and 4) Effective workforce planning and policy making require better data collection and information infrastructure. How successful are we in meeting these recommendations? How does this impact what we are and what we should be doing in master s education, including why it is imperative to get nurses onto boards and commissions? Hear from the IOM Committee s study director and the director of the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action. Speaker: Susan B. Hassmiller, PhD, Senior Advisor for Nursing and Director, Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Princeton, NJ 9
