Please see your counselor if you are interested in taking a course through a non-traditional instructional setting. All requests will require approval from the school principal and/or Central Services.
OdysseyWare OdysseyWare is an Internet-based distance learning program in which students may complete coursework in most core areas. The courses are for credit recovery only and are self-paced. Students are typically expected to carry a full course load in addition to any OdysseyWare course taken. This online program offers the flexibility for students to work at home and school. If you are planning to play sports at the collegiate level, courses taken through OdysseyWare are not approved for NCAA eligibility.
North Carolina Virtual Public School A selected number of AP, Honors, College Prep, and credit recovery courses can be taken online during the instructional day through NC Virtual Public School. Online courses are rigorous academic classes which require good time management skills and self motivation. Students should consider this method of instruction carefully before enrolling. Certain courses (including EOC s) can t be taken through NCVPS. Students interested in taking an online course should contact guidance for a list of available courses or visit the NC Virtual Public Schools website at
Union County Virtual On-Line Courses Union County Virtual has developed a number of online courses in order to meet the academic needs of students. If a course is offered by both UC Virtual and NCVPS, students must take the course through UC Virtual. These courses are taught by UCPS teachers with face-to-face teacher/student sessions held on a weekly basis at Sun Valley High School. Students will take a face-to-face final exam upon completion of semester. Courses available through the UC Virtual online program can be found on pages of the Program of Studies which can be found at
Concurrent Enrollment Guidelines Students may request permission to enroll in a course at a post-secondary institution as long as he/she remains on the high school campus for at least half of the school day. All students must have prior approval from their counselor, principal, and superintendent or designee to be eligible. Students wishing to pursue concurrent enrollment must be capable of completing college level course work.
Career & College Promise Through the Career & College Promise (CCP), qualified high school students have the opportunity to take select college courses tuition free while they are in high school. To be eligible, students must be a high school junior or senior, have a weighted G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher, and demonstrate college readiness on an approved assessment or placement test as shown on page 80 of the UCPS Program of Studies. Courses available under the two Associate College Transfer Pathways are listed on pages and courses under the fifteen Career Technical Pathways are listed on pages of the UCPS Program of Studies which can be found at UCPS will approve dual credit and cover the cost of textbooks. These select college courses are taken at South Piedmont Community College.
Career & Technical Education Academies CTE Academies are located at UCPS High Schools across the county. Students are able to attend their home school for core classes and travel to the appropriate high school for the academy classes. Students must provide their own transportation to and from the academy classes. Academy courses are available for 11th and 12th grade students. Several academies have prerequisite courses that are offered beginning in the 9th grade at all schools.
