Laney AIG STEM - Medical/ Biomedical Academy Dept.: Instructional Services Background/Historical Context: Laney High School s signature program planning started last school year ( ). Laney High School surveyed current students to determine career and postsecondary interest. The top two choices for our students were interests in medical/biomedical science and careers related to Science Technology and Math (STEM). In an effort to keep all stakeholders informed, our signature program was communicated to staff through faculty meetings, department meetings, and our school improvement team. Laney also formed a site team including teachers and parents to guide the formation of the program. Members of the site team researched similar programs in the state to learn from their implementation process. Members of the site team visited biomedical technology programs in Wayne County and Wake County. Site visits are also planned to the North Carolina School of Science and Math as well as the City of Medicine High School in Durham. Members of the site team hosted a representative from the North Carolina School of Science and Math to discuss dual enrollment possibilities for our students in related and unrelated courses and access to the NCSSM curriculum. Contacts have been made with Cape Fear Community College and possibilities for dual enrollment are available through the Career and College Promise Program. During the signature program process the Laney administration sought advice from New Hanover County School s AIG coordinator, Sarah Gubitz and Career Technical Education Director, Laverne Pickett. Within the planning process, progress has been communicated with our senior leadership team. Laney s Signature program proposal for an AIG STEM Medical/Biomedical Program has been intentionally and incrementally planned over the course of a year and includes the voices of our students and staff. Career outlook in these areas are strong and continued growth is projected. We believe that with the right coordinator, this program will grow and that other career academies can be added to support other career interests of our students, in addition to medical and biomedical possibilities.

3 E. A. Laney High School Proposed AIG STEM - Medical/Biomedical Academy Overview The primary goals of the AIG STEM Medical/Biomedical Academy are to prepare Laney students for postsecondary work and, eventually, careers in the medical and biomedical fields. Students enrolled in this program will meet all North Carolina Graduation Requirements while heavily focusing on coursework in science, technology, math and specially designed course work in medical science and biomedical science. Students will be benefit from guest speakers from related career fields starting in the 9 th grade. Academic Focus The academic focus of the program will be to prepare students for postsecondary work and eventual careers in the medical science and biomedical science fields through rigorous and relevant coursework. Students will begin this program as ninth graders and will continue through graduation. The program will be available to sixty, ninth grade students in the school year. This program will rely heavily on community partnerships and internships to provide relevant experiences for students in the program. Students in the program may opt to complete graduation projects related to their medical and biomedical course work. Students from other districts in New Hanover County may apply to the program through the regular NHCS open choice process. Successful completion of the program includes successful completion and participation in related activities, completion of at least four medical/biomedical courses in addition to North Carolina graduation requirements and related internship of eighty hours. Each student that completes the Medical/Biomedical program will receive a seal on their diploma that indicates successful completion of the program. Future Development Upon the approval of funding for the AIG STEM Coordinator, Laney would like to explore other career and postsecondary possibilities. A likely next step for future development would be a STEM Engineering Academy. The STEM Engineering Academy would have similar internship and community partnership expectations. It is our belief that once the Medical/Biomedical Program is in place, plans for the future development of the STEM Engineering Academy can occur. We predict that this would not require additional resources.

5 Eleventh grade course work to include: Honors English 11 Advanced Math or AP Math Honor Science or AP Science Honors or AP US History Medical Science 2 NCVPS possibilities Students will complete an internship during the school year or during the summer between eleventh and twelfth grade. Twelfth grade course work to include: Honors English 12 and related graduation project Honors or AP Science Honors or AP Math Nursing Fundamentals based on availability Electives / dual enrollment NCVPS, CFCC or NCSSSM based on availability Students may substitute on level courses upon Coordinator approval.
