1 Note: These requirements apply to students who enrolled in the ninth (9 th ) grade before the school year. Graduation Credential Options The following sections describe the various options for earning a graduation credential which will allow a student to participate in commencement exercises. These options include the Certificate of Attendance, the Alabama Graduation Certification, the Alabama High School Diploma with or without specific endorsements, or the Alabama Occupational Diploma. It is important to note that one of these options, the Certificate of Attendance, is not a state-sanctioned high school exit document. Certificate of Attendance (Hoover City Schools) The Certificate of Attendance shall be awarded to students who do not pass the Alabama High School Graduation Examination (AHSGE) but do meet the guidelines for attendance and course credits required for graduation. The Certificate of Attendance is not a state-sanctioned high school exit document, but eligible students will be allowed to participate in graduation commencement exercises. Graduation Certificate (Alabama) A student with a disability as defined by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act may be presented with an Alabama Graduation Certificate when the student is unable to complete the requirements for a diploma but has earned 24.0 credits or completed the Individualized Education Plan or passed the Alabama High School Graduation Exam. Eligible students will be allowed to participate in graduation commencement exercises. High School Diploma (Alabama) In accordance with the state board of education s First-Choice Initiative, all students will be placed on a four-year plan which leads to the Alabama Advanced Academic Endorsement to the regular diploma. Parents and students who have reached the age of consent, in consultation with school officials, may opt out of this default endorsement path by providing written notification to the student s counselor of their selection of an alternate endorsement pathway or their intention to follow the minimum requirements for a regular Alabama High School Diploma or Alabama Occupational Diploma with no endorsements. Parents and students who have reached the age of consent can change their selected pathway at any time by notifying the student s counselor in writing.
