3 BA (Hons) Film Studies Film is a broad area of study and can include critical, theoretical and practical elements. In contemporary society the development of creative industries such as film, television and video have led to a surge in the number of people producing visual products for consumption in Britain, Europe and around the world, as well as related areas such as film administration and journalism. The study of film offers many different ways of engaging with an important part of contemporary culture. BA Film Studies at the University of Winchester offers the opportunity to study a diverse range of film texts, forms, national traditions and historical periods from a variety of perspectives. This includes the opportunity for students to undertake practical elements in video, screenwriting and cinema technologies. The programme examines a range of areas from American, European and world perspectives while investigating specific areas such as film genre, avantgarde film and film audiences as well as thematic studies. Course overview There is a range of options for students once Year 1 is completed. Year 1 is foundational and introduces students to ideas and ways of working enabling them to begin to develop an understanding of the diversity of film studies and film itself. Although there are core modules at Year 2, they are kept to a minimum. The teaching team believe there is a wealth of material available on the study of film and students should be able to focus on particular interests. Thus, Year 3 is entirely optional and allows for the free choice of available modules once the dissertation requirements have been fulfilled. Within this structure of options, students may specialise in particular areas of film or choose to take modules which reflect the wide range of forms and traditions. For example, students may specialise in theoretical studies of film or focus on the development of national cinemas. 4 BA (Hons) Film Studies Qualifications Film Studies welcomes students with a range of educational backgrounds and experience. Students do not need to have studied film before but should be able to demonstrate ability to engage in written work and have a real enthusiasm for a wide range of film. We are aware not all schools or colleges offer qualifications in Film or related areas such as Communications and Media Studies. In the first semester of Year 1 we adopt an approach that focuses on the necessary skills, knowledges and concepts required for study of film at degree level. The areas studied offer variation and breadth of study for those students who have examined film before, but also provide an introductory route into film for those who have not studied film. Learning and teaching A variety of teaching methods are used on the Film Studies programme, such as seminars, tutorials, screenings and workshops, as well as practical forms of learning. The teaching team believe flexibility of delivery and student centred learning are key to successful study. While lectures are an important part of teaching, so too is film viewing, independent research and a range of other learning practices. These methods are designed to develop a sense of interactivity between lecturers and students as well as keep students actively engaged in the creation of academic knowledge.
