13 Look Out for Our Liberal Arts Applicant Days USA 68 Did 1968 really witness the supplanting of the Summer of Love with a long, cold Winter of Discontent? Did this year see the United States seriously unravel, as many historians have argued? In this session, we will explore one of the most significant calendar years in America s recent past by focussing our critical attention on three key moments February s Tet Offensive which altered both the conduct of the Vietnam War and its reception on the home-front, April s assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. and its impact on the Civil Rights Movement, and August s Democratic Convention and the murderous street violence that ensued on the streets of Chicago. Anchored in historical enquiry, we will examine these events through the perspectives offered by a range of disciplines and texts - such as movies, music and photojournalism and in the process build a fuller picture of this pivotal year.
