4 AIMS OF THE DOCUMENT The aims of this document are to: define the structure of the programme(s); specify the programme award titles; identify programme and level learning outcomes; articulate the regulations governing the awards defined within the document. AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME(S) This programme aims to develop the knowledge and skills of graduates who have current or future responsibility for disaster management and cyber security. Responding to market demand, this programme will provide a global security educational product that has value and impact in the Middle Eastern and African market place. The blending of disaster management and cyber security meets a global concern, and growing demand for security awareness that is prevalent to most states, government agencies and law enforcements. Primarily this programme is to provide a Continued Professional Development (CPD) opportunity for industry professionals and to provide them with the choice to further their development through studying on a Master s programme. The aims of this Level 7 programme are to produce students who: Demonstrate the ability, knowledge and skills to be competent managers in the rapidly changing crisis, disaster management and cyber security environments; Demonstrate an understanding of the core business disciplines and methods of working in the crisis and disaster management sectors, and be able to apply these in practical contexts; Appraise current and future environments in which national and international disaster management agencies and their emergency services operate and develop a comprehensive strategic response; Define, investigate, analyse, evaluate and respond to tactical and strategic issues of concern to organisations in disaster management; Adopt an analytical and creative approach to problem solving through independent judgement and critical self-awareness, working as individuals or as part of a team; Manage their own learning and self-development; Communicate ideas clearly and in the most appropriate media, demonstrating a capacity for logical and coherent thinking; Utilise a range of personal skills and competencies that will enable them to operate effectively in their industry; Adopt a critical understanding of assurance methods and security management concepts required for support business process systems; Demonstrate understanding of business risk analytics, cross-domain solutions, and the application of knowledge and skills to manage security events and real-world design problems; Demonstrate the technical skills and competencies to work with data (clear, encrypted or transformed), secure information operations, and within the technology and architecture of diverse industries, such as defence, healthcare, hospitality, transportation and banking; Develop their research skills in areas such as literature reviews, critical analysis of research findings, project proposals, planning, experiment design and analysis, and dissemination. ALIGNMENT WITH THE UNIVERSITY S STRATEGIC PLAN This joint MSc from the Faculty of Management and the Faculty of Science & Technology provides a good example of BU Fusion and BU 2018 in that this collaborative taught programme promotes the global security theme and internal partnerships between faculties. It is will raise BU brand awareness within Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), delivering CPD education to clients across the Middle East. 4

5 LEARNING HOURS AND ASSESSMENT Bournemouth University taught programmes are composed of units of study, which are assigned a credit value indicating the amount of learning undertaken. The minimum credit value of a unit is normally 20 credits, above which credit values normally increase at 20-point intervals. 20 credits is the equivalent of 200 study hours required of the student, including lectures, seminars, assessment and independent study. 20 University credits are equivalent to 10 European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits. As a general rule, time devoted to assessment should normally represent approximately 25% of the student learning time for a unit (i.e. 50 hours for a 20-credit unit), leaving the rest for specific programmerelated activities, including lectures, seminars, preparatory work, practical activities, reading, critical reflection and independent learning. Of the time devoted to assessment, every 10 hours of student effort is equivalent to approximately 1,000 words of coursework or 1 hour of examination. Therefore, as a guideline, a 20-credit unit would normally require the equivalent of approximately 5,000 words in total (e.g. a 5,000-word written coursework). Designed to be flexible to meet the needs of working professionals, the part-time delivery of this programme has been designed so it minimises a student s time away from the workplace. It is envisaged that each unit will have an intensive 5-day lecture programme, followed by 9 weeks study supported by online access to a VLE that will contain relevant resources. On successful completion of each unit students will be awarded 20 academic credits (Level 7). These credits can be built upon by undertaking other units which will make up students own tailored postgraduate qualification. The core knowledge and understanding is assessed through appropriately structured coursework reports, case studies and presentations. Typically, intended learning outcomes will be assessed by coursework assessment which usually involves a 5000 word report. Video conferencing facilities, Skype presentations, and virtual classroom tools will be used to communicate online with students so that they can be supported and assessments can be managed. STAFF DELIVERING THE PROGRAMME Students will be taught by a combination of senior academic staff with others who have relevant expertise including where appropriate according to the content of the unit academic staff, qualified professional practitioners, demonstrators/technicians and research students. INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES AND HOW THE PROGRAMME ENABLES STUDENTS TO ACHIEVE AND DEMONSTRATE THE INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES LEVEL 7 INTENDED PROGRAMME OUTCOMES A: Subject knowledge and understanding This Level 7 provides opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate knowledge and understanding of: A1.
