The European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction (EARLI) and the Cyprus University of Technology announce the 16 th European Conference for Research on Learning and Instruction and the 19 th Junior Researchers of EARLI (JURE) Conference in Limassol, Cyprus Towards a Reflective Society: Synergies Between Learning, Teaching and Research EARLI: August 2015 JURE: August 2015 EARLI 2015 First Call for Proposals Submissions open: July 1, 2014 Submission Deadline: October 29, 2014
Dear Colleagues, The Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) and the Department of Communication and Internet Studies are proud to host the 16 th Biennial European Conference for Research on Learning and Instruction (EARLI 2015). We are looking forward to welcoming you all in Limassol, Cyprus and to providing a forum to share and discuss your research with an international research community. The theme of the EARLI 2015 conference is Towards a Reflective Society: Synergies between Learning, Teaching and Research. The EARLI 2015 theme addresses the emphasis of the conference on research-based learning and instruction, while highlighting the crucial role of the systematic investigation of learning and teaching as a mechanism for promoting innovative and creative thinking and sustaining long-term societal growth. Reflective citizenship lies at the heart of contemporary societies. The 21 st century calls for a redefinition of the forms of knowledge, skills and competences that are necessary for the advancement of our societies. While the focus on basic skills and the need for disciplinary knowledge cannot be ignored, there is a need to work individually and collectively towards increasing the reflective capacity of our societies. This means that different stakeholders, such as learners of different ages and stages, teachers at all levels and researchers need to focus on being reflective in their practices and need to synchronize efforts, so that we can all reach the ambitious goal for education as an integral and productive force of an innovative modern society. During the 2015 EARLI conference in Limassol, we want to explore the meaning of these terms within the fields of learning and instruction. Therefore, we hope to bring together ambitious researchers from across the world and provide them with a forum to engage in both formal and informal conversations, to establish new links and networks, which hopefully may last far beyond the time of our conference! In 2015 we will also be celebrating the 30 th anniversary of the EARLI Association! Please join us in celebrating this remarkable event! We believe that the city of Limassol and the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) offer the optimal circumstances for a fruitful EARLI conference. We look forward to meeting all of you in Limassol, a unique coastal destination that combines a rich heritage dating back thousands of years with a contemporary flair! For more information on the city of Limassol and the 2015 EARLI conference, please visit Dr. Eleni A. Kyza Conference President 2 Dr. Iolie Nicolaidou Conference Manager
Funding for EARLI 2015 participants The EARLI Executive Committee would like to express its commitment to our members who are facing financial struggles and for whom the conference attendance is perhaps not an evident option. Since the 2013 conference, EARLI offers funding to a number of presenters (first author) that have their proposal accepted and who fit the requirements. The funding will be granted under the form of a waived conference fee for the EARLI 2015 conference. We feel that this extra funding might be helpful and that this would help to sustain our research community. The Executive Committee will decide on who will be considered eligible for this bursary based on the criteria that will be outlined after the review process. After the review process, a call will be sent out to all presenters who have their proposal accepted. 3

Conference Venue The EARLI 2015 conference will take place at the main campus of the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT). The conference venue is at the centre of the old city and the conference itself will take place in two main buildings. Most walking distances will be kept at less than five minutes with keynotes needing a few more minutes but still within walking distance. As the first week of classes is on September 7 th and no summer classes will be held during the period of the conference, this area of the city will be mostly used by the EARLI participants during the conference week. Participants will be provided with wireless internet access and will have access to several computers equipped with printers. The campus is within walking distance from public transportation (buses) and a five minute walk from the seafront and the coastal path. Participants can navigate easily across the city, using public transportation (buses), bicycles, taxis or private vehicles. The Limassol Municipality sponsors a network of public rental bikes which can be used for leisure or other business. A dedicated biking lane stretches along the beach front, and early morning or late afternoon hours are perfect for this activity. The CUT campus is surrounded by many traditional and international restaurants and cafeterias. Taking advantage of the Mediterranean climate, two coffee breaks and a catered buffet lunch will be provided in two main open-air areas, which will be partially covered with tents and partially airconditioned. Catering will be available to all registered participants on site and free of charge. Lunches and coffee breaks will be held in open-air areas. Tents and outdoor air-conditioning units will be provided for those wishing to avoid the sun! Limassol is located in the southern coast of the island; it is geographically the largest city in Cyprus and the second largest in population after Nicosia. The city of Limassol is well situated for local and international travel to Cyprus. Its central position offers easy, highway access to all major cities, as well as to the Troodos Mountains within a 35 to 45 minute-drive. It is also conveniently situated only 35 minutes away from both Larnaca and Paphos international airports, with buses running from the airports to Limassol on a 24 hour basis. 6
Social Programme The EARLI 2015 features a rich social programme which will provide conference participants and accompanying persons many opportunities to get together, have fun and thereby build new relationships. The first highlight will be the Presidential Address and Awards Ceremony and the Opening Reception on Tuesday evening. The event and the reception will both take place outdoors do not miss this event where everybody is invited to grab a drink, make new friends and enjoy a lovely summer night! The annual Limassol wine festival will be also held during the conference week; the concept of the festival is based on ancient celebrations from the Greek mythology to honour the God of wine, Dionysus. Do not miss the opportunity to visit this event, enjoy free local wine, and taste traditional specialties. Limassol is a cosmopolitan city, with plenty of places to enjoy drinks or eat dinner al fresco by the sea or in the city. Within a few minutes walk from the conference venue one can visit the medieval castle or engage in the bustling nightlife surrounding the area. The city is also perfect for a wide variety of activities that include enjoying the sun and sea in one of the numerous beaches, water sports, diving, or a cruise in the clear Mediterranean waters, revitalising therapies at local spa centres, visits to archaeological sites and museums, enjoying a wine tour in the mountain villages, walking into the unspoiled countryside, watching cultural and athletic events, or even attending a tailored theme dinner, or a tournament of golf. Both marine and mountain activities are easily accessible, with the mountains being about a 30-minute drive away. Antiquities, shopping, the mountains, nightlife are all within easy reach. EARLI2015 will organize cultural and social events to attractions in the area, while local hotels can assist with excursions to other parts of the island. The birthplace of Aphrodite, the ancient theater of Curium, and the ancient mosaics of Paphos are all a stone s throw away. The EARLI 2015 Conference Gala Dinner will be held outside at a spectacular location; the event will give you a taste of the Cypriot hospitality, allowing you to taste lots of traditional Cypriot dishes, and inviting you to dance along to local and international music. Be sure to get yourself a ticket in time for this great evening as capacity will be limited due to the location! 7

EARLI2015 Submission Timeline The Scientific Programme Committee invites both empirical and theoretical proposals for symposia, paper presentations, posters, round tables, ICT demonstrations and workshops. The official language of the conference is English. Proposals should be submitted through the conference website ( Before submitting your proposal, we recommend that you carefully read the guidelines about the content of proposals and about the submission process. These guidelines will be available on the website shortly. Please note that a valid EARLI user name and password will be required when using the online conference system to submit a proposal or register for the conference. To facilitate this, you will be able to obtain your username and password from the EARLI website at any time. You will also need to ensure that your address is updated in the EARLI database and that you will not be using multiple addresses when interacting with the on-line conference systems. Users who do not already have an EARLI account can register for a new account either from the EARLI website at any time prior to their submissions, or during their initial proposal submission / conference registration processes. If you are submitting a symposium or panel discussion, you will need to ensure that the address entered for each active participant (i.e. presenting authors, chairpersons, organisers, discussants) matches the address they have entered in the EARLI database. Consequently, each active conference participant needs to have an EARLI account provided through the corresponding address before the submission. The address will be used to retrieve the participants details from the EARLI database. For co-authors who will not be presenting a paper at the conference, a matching EARLI account address is not required. In order to retrieve your EARLI username / password, you can use the password reminder service: If you have any questions or concerns about your EARLI login, please contact the EARLI office at info@earli.org. For questions about the EARLI 2015 conference, send an to: info@earli2015.org. EARLI2015 Conference General Rules and Policies According to the EARLI policies you may not participate as a presenter in more than two sessions. In addition, you can act once as the chair of a symposium and once as a discussant, for a maximum of four appearances. You may participate as a non-presenting co-author as many times as you like. PLEASE NOTE: The conference programme will avoid timetable conflicts for presenting authors, chairpersons and discussants, but not for co-authors! SUBMISSION OF PROPOSALS: July 1, 2014 October 29,
EARLI2015 Conference Session Formats It is important to read the guidance below carefully so that you select the appropriate format for your presentation. Selecting an inappropriate format may significantly reduce the chances of acceptance of your proposal! Each of the formats outlined below are equally valuable but serve different purposes. Symposia provide an opportunity to present research on one topic, often from multiple perspectives, providing a coherent set of papers for discussion. Symposia sessions are directed by a chairperson, involving four presenters and one discussant, from at least three different countries. We recommend that symposia conveners set an early deadline for possible contributors to submit to them and that each individual submission is checked for its own quality and its relevance and coherence to the topic of the symposium prior to formal submission to EARLI Please note that all active participants in a symposium need to have a valid EARLI ID before the symposium is submitted! Session Duration: A symposium is scheduled for 90 minutes, comprising of 20 minutes presentation per speaker, ten minutes for the discussant, and 20 minutes for open discussion. Paper sessions are oral presentations of four papers, followed by a discussion with the audience. It is important that empirical papers have data and results, or they will not be accepted. Research that is at an earlier stage is very suitable for Round Table or Poster sessions. Theoretical papers, of course, are welcome. Session Duration: Paper sessions are scheduled for 90 minutes, normally with four presenters, who should plan for a presentation of 15 minutes, plus an additional five minutes for questions. At the end of all presentations there should also be a 10 minute open discussion. Flipped presentation sessions on research frontiers (by invitation only) is a new format of a session, introduced to increase the interactivity level at the conference. In this type of session, a short video (preferably) or narrated slides (max. 5 minutes) are prepared beforehand and published on the conference website for delegates to view before and during the conference. During the face-to-face discussions, the presenter is given 30 minutes to discuss his/her research. As delegates have seen the video or slides beforehand, we expect that this format will allow for informed and in-depth scientific discussions. Session Duration: Flipped sessions are scheduled for 90 minutes. Submissions will go through the regular peer review process as papers. Delegates will be asked if they are interested to present using this format. The final list of papers in each flipped session will be decided by the conference International Planning Committee. 12
Interactive poster sessions involve five or six posters, visually presenting research studies. A short oral presentation of about 5 minutes for each poster is given to an audience gathered as a group. After the authors brief presentation, an in-depth discussion between them and the audience follows. The poster sessions offer researchers the chance to present their work in a visual format and offer more opportunities for interaction and discussion. Session Duration: Poster sessions are scheduled for 90 minutes, following the format above. Materials for fixing posters on the walls will be provided. Round table sessions offer opportunities for a more discursive exploration of research issues. This may well involve discussion of work in progress. The presenters explain their research and research issue, and invite the participants to help to discuss emerging data or to solve a research issue or problem. Round table sessions will take place in seminar rooms with a board-room style table. Five or six presenters will explain and discuss their research one after another. Session Duration: Round table sessions are scheduled for 90 minutes. ICT Demonstrations allow presenters to display, explain and familiarise users with a potentially useful teaching or research tool or method. The presentation may include references to completed research, but the point of the session is to demonstrate the tool, not present the research for criticism. The audience may offer their viewpoints and share their experiences with similar tools or different tools for the same purpose. Session Duration: ICT demonstrations are scheduled for 90 minutes. Workshops provide an opportunity to familiarise participants with some aspect of research or teaching practice, so that questioning and discussion are suitably informed. Learning-by-doing occupies most of the session, and any presentations are brief. Providing adequate time for reflective discussion is important. Session Duration: Workshops are scheduled for 90 minutes. 13
Review Process Depending on the format and type of research report being submitted, the proposals will be reviewed by at least two referees according to the following criteria: EMPIRICAL PAPER Relevance to EARLI domain of Learning and Instruction Significance for theory, policy and practice Theoretical framework, conceptual rationale or pragmatic grounding Research method and design for both qualitative and quantitative approaches (research questions, context, participants, data sources, sampling, procedure, ethical issues) Clarity of results or preliminary results and conclusions Overall quality and scientific originality THEORETICAL PAPER Relevance to EARLI domain of Learning and Instruction Significance for theoretical debate Theoretical framework, conceptual rationale or pragmatic grounding Embeddedness in relevant literature Clarity and robustness of theoretical argument Overall quality and scientific originality POSTER (EMPIRICAL) Relevance to EARLI domain of Learning and Instruction Significance for theory, policy and practice Theoretical framework, conceptual rationale or pragmatic grounding Research method and design (research questions, context, participants, data sources, sampling, procedure, ethical issues) Preliminary data analysis or Anticipated results Overall quality and scientific originality POSTER (THEORETICAL) Relevance to EARLI domain of Learning and Instruction Significance for theoretical debate Theoretical framework, conceptual rationale or pragmatic grounding Embeddedness in relevant literature Clarity and robustness of theoretical argument Overall quality and scientific originality 14
