1 PRESENTING OUR MATH PROGRAM HIGH SCHOOL All math classes through Algebra 2, 9 th through 12 th grades, are scheduled during the same hour of the day. (Higher math classes are scheduled at a later hour.) This proves to be very beneficial to students at every stage of development because they are not locked into one or two choices of classes that might be available during a particular math period. This has resulted in a quality product with our CAT tests reflecting our over-all math results in the high percentiles nationally. When necessary, the 9 th grade year is often a good year to repeat a class because no credit is lost while learning and skills are strengthened. Math class recommendations are based on a review of the semester grades and final test scores from last year and previous high school credits. Please bring this math class recommendation when you register for classes. There can be some variations in the order of math classes taken. These can be discussed at your curriculum registration. New Students If you are a new 9 th grade student you will be required to take the math placement test. This test can be taken on the same day as your CAT testing or will be taken during the first week of school. If you are a new 10 th -12 th grade student, you will be placed according to your last year s math class. This will be discussed at your curriculum appointment. Please bring a copy of your grade report for last year showing your math class and the grades for that class. New International Students All new international students will be given a placement test upon entering the school. NEW!!! Geometry Pre-Requiste: Algebra 1 Text: Saxon Geometry Presented in the familiar Saxon approach of incremental development and continual review, topics are continually kept fresh in the students' minds. This course covers triangle congruence, basic postulates and theorems, basic 2 dimensional geometry shapes and their perimeters and areas, 3 dimensional shapes and their surface area and volume, properties of lines and angles, some two-column proofs, and slopes and equations of lines. This class includes review of basic Algebra 1 concepts. MATH DEPARTMENT _- ALL COURSE DESCRIPTIONS MATH DEPARTMENT _- COURSE DESCRIPTIONS Math Foundations 1, 2, 3, 4 (High school) Text: Various textbooks including Saxon math books and teacher created materials. Course Description: This class is designed for students needing extra help with their understanding of basic math concepts and are not ready for traditional classroom work. The goal of this class is to prepare students to move into traditional math courses by the next school year. Entry into this course begins with a math placement test. Students are then placed into curriculum that best meets their individual need. It continues with small group and individual instruction. High school student Math TA s as well as an adult teacher assistant help to provide one-on-one instruction. Placement in this course is by approval of the head of the Math Department. This course sequence counts as 1 credit elective course for each year of participation in this course but does not fulfill any high school math requirement. Math 87

2 Text: Saxon Math 87 Second Edition Course Description: This course is designed for students who need extra study and reinforcement of basic math skills. Topics covered in Math 87 include arithmetic calculation, measurements, basic geometry, fraction /decimal/percent conversions/unit multipliers, as well as pre-algebra exercises.. This course counts as 1 credit elective course but does not fulfill any high school math requirement. Pre Algebra Text: Saxon Pre-Algebra Third Edition Course Description: This course will help students develop the skills necessary to manipulate numbers, solve equations and understand the general principles at work.. It introduces basic concepts of algebra and reviews mathematic operations. After completing this course, the students will be able to utilize problem solving in these areas: place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and signed numbers, order of operations, exponents and roots, prime and composite numbers, graphs, averages, unit multipliers, ratios, algebra, geometry, and practical application through the incorporation of word problems is required in this course. This course counts as 1 credit elective course but does not fulfill any high school math requirement. Algebra I Text: Saxon Algebra 1 Third Edition Pre-Requiste: Pre-Algebra Course Description: Algebra is a branch of mathematics in which variables are substituted for unknown values to solve a particular problem. This course will provide a comprehensive teaching of the fundamental aspects of problem solving. It offers a substantial review of pre-algebra fundamentals while also offering coverage of area, volume, and perimeter of geometric figures. Major topics include evaluation of algebraic equations, thorough coverage of exponents, polynomials, solving and graphing linear equations, complex fractions, solving systems of equations, radicals, word problems, solving and graphing quadratic equations, solving systems of equations, and solving equations by factoring. NEW!!! The ability to apply fundamental concepts of mathematics automatically is necessary for future success, therefore students will continue to practice with these concepts while more advanced topics are introduced and mastered. Topics will include polynomial functions, solving systems of equations, graphing linear and quadratic functions, polar coordinates and vectors, and an introduction to basic trigonometry. Geometry and algebra concepts are studied concurrently. Math TA Pre-Requiste: Algebra 2

3 Course Description: This teacher s assistant program is designed for high school students who have successfully completed Algebra 2 or above. It places a student in a math classroom to assist the math teacher by working with students who would benefit from extra one-on-one or small group instruction. Acceptance into the program and classroom placement must have approval of the head of the math department. Grade is based on classroom performance as evaluated by the teacher. Math Tutor Volunteer Pre-Requiste: Algebra 2 This volunteer program is designed for high school students who have successfully completed Algebra 2 or above. It allows a student to leave their study hall when convenient to both the student and the math teacher to be a Math TA. Volunteers can work as many days as they are able. Acceptance into the program and classroom placement must have approval of the head of the math department. College Prep Math Text: No text. This course uses teacher created handouts/ worksheets. Pre-Requiste: Algebra 2 Course Description: This class is designed for juniors and seniors who have successfully completed Algebra 2 or above. It is designed to help reinforce and further math concepts that will prepare students planning to attend college. It will cover advanced applied Geometry, advanced Algebra, Linear Algebra, function notation and function evaluation, review of basic trigonometry and an introduction to probability and statistics. It will also include test preparation for SAT/ACT tests and college math placement tests. Trigonometry /Pre-Calculus Text: Saxon Advanced Mathematics Second Edition Pre-Requiste: Algebra 2 Course Description: This course will continue the mathematical development begun in Algebra 1 and Algebra 2. Students will begin with a review of the fundamental concepts of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry in order to progressively build towards comprehending more advanced concepts. Topics will include congruent figures, similarity, complex fractions, advanced word problems, exponential functions, and advanced trigonometric equations, trigonometric identities and their applications, graphing conic sections, and analytical geometry. Calculus Text: Saxon Calculus First Edition Pre-Requiste: Trigonometry/Pre-Calculus This course is designed for prospective mathematics majors as well as for students whose primary interests are in engineering, physics, business, or the life sciences. The course contains a sufficient review of Pre- Calculus concepts. Included are the study f limits and their properties, introduction to differentiation techniques including product and quotient rule, u-substitution, and implicit differentiation, real world applications of differentiation, an introduction to integration techniques, applications to the real world using integration.

4 MATH CLASS RECOMMENDATION Name has been assigned to Math Foundations 6 th, 7 th, 8 th grade Math Foundations 1, 2, 3, 4 (High School) Math 76 Math 87 Pre-Algebra Algebra 1 Geometry Algebra 2 College Prep Math Trig/Pre-Calculus Calculus 1. By the math placement committee based on requirements, performance and aptitude. If you wish to discuss this, please request an appointment to be held during the curriculum registration time. 2. Has not been assigned to a math class. Three years of math fulfills the high school requirement. Request further math at your curriculum registration time only if desired. 3. 1/2 year of a past math class has been failed. Credit needs to be made up year of a past math class has been failed.
