MUSIC CALENDAR -TERM 3 DATES 21 July: Period 3 Concert Band Workshop, P09 23 July: Maton Guitar Factory Excursion Guitar students, Years 10 & July, 3pm-7pm Concert Band, Victorian Schools Music Festival 5 August, 7pm Vocal Concert, The Hall 11 August, Lunchtime Guitar Ensemble, The Gallery 17 August, 1pm-3.15pm Wind Symphony, Victorian School Bands Festival 26 August, 8.15pm Stage Band, Victorian School Bands Festival 3 September: Wind Symphony, Royal South Street Eisteddfod 8 & 15 September, 6.30pm VCE Performance Night, The Hall 16 September Youth Contest and Concert Choir Deakin Edge - Federation Square 17 September, 7pm Jazz Night, Box Hill RSL TERM 2 IN REVIEW Term 2 was one of our busiest terms in the music department here at Box Hill High School. All Ensembles were kept busy practising for many performances. The Concert Band and Wind Symphony went to Camp Oasis in Mt. Evelyn for the annual Band Camp where students were involved in intensive rehearsals but also had the opportunity to take part in many activities including flying fox, candle making and singing. The Star Wars theme was a major hit on camp with students having the option to dress up in the theme and compete for three prizes. Congratulations to those who won the best dressed awards, including first place winner, Zarah who dressed up as Princess Leah. The Band Camp has been running for 10 years in Mount Evelyn and we look forward to heading back in 2016.
2 The String Ensemble had a very busy term, performing on three occasions. Their debut performance was in the gallery outside the library, wowing passersby with the unmistakable sound of Violins, Cellos and a Double Bass. The following week, students participated in the Victorian School Music Festival Orchestral section at the Hawthorn Arts Centre. The Ensemble played in the Junior section where they accounted themselves very well. Students had an onstage tutorial and the opportunity to listen to three other ensembles perform. Voice students had the amazing opportunity to take part in the Big Barbershop Day Out at the Waverley Baptist Church in Wheelers Hill. The 2 day workshop was a chance for students to be trained in singing in harmony in a cappella context. It was an excellent intensive workshop for all who attended. Other performances included 40 Dorking Road Nursing Home (Guitar Ensemble and Choir), Open Night performances by the Stage Band and Choir, school assembly performances and a Junior and Senior Choir Workshop with guest, Christine Storey. The term ended with a wonderful Winter Concert show-casing all regularly rehearsing Ensembles at Box Hill High School. Thank you to all students who performed admirably, parents who support their children s music education, instrumental music staff and Patricia Musumeci for her ongoing support of the program and the concert. Troy Rogers VOCAL CONCERT AND JAZZ NIGHT We are all looking forward to another busy Term 3 which will include The Vocal Concert on 5th August in the School Hall and Jazz Night on 17 September at the Box Hill RSL. You will no doubt be entertained at these evenings, run by Ms Brown and Mr Corcoran respectively. We hope to see you there. Entry is $5 and monies raised will go towards fundraising for a grand piano. 2
3 2015 MUSIC CAPTAINS The Music Captains of 2015 are Cole and Tiffany of Year 12. Music Captains are required to display outstanding leadership qualities at all times and be role models for students in the music community. Cole s and Tiffany s roles as Music Captains require them to represent the Instrumental Music Program at Box Hill High School by speaking at assemblies and concerts, helping to organise school events and co-ordinate students, promote the Instrumental Music Program within the school and community, write articles for the newsletter and school magazine and be willing to support the Music Program. The personal qualities required to fulfil this role are leadership skills, good organisation skills, confidence in speaking, maturity, responsibility and the ability to communicate well. Both Music Captains have written a few lines about themselves and how their interest in music began. FRIENDS OF MUSIC 2016 In 2016, the Friends of Music parents group will begin and will help our growing music program by assisting at the various concerts held by the music department throughout the year. They will also assist in fundraising activities to help buy musical instruments and provide funds for upcoming tours. It is the aim of the group to meet several times throughout the year. Parents will be able to sign up at the beginning of next year. BIG BARBERSHOP DAY OUT Cole Hi, I m Cole, one of the Music Captains at Box Hill High School! My musical journey began in late primary school, when I started playing the piano. I switched to getting lessons on the Alto Saxophone in Year 7 and fell in love with jazz, funk and soul. Now I play saxophone in the school Wind Symphony, Stage Band and sing in the Senior Choir, as well as playing bass and singing in a pop/rock band with my two brothers (called Brother for some reason). I listen to and play music all the time, and can t imagine what my life would be like without it! Tiffany My name is Tiffany, one of Box Hill High School's Music Captains for I have been involved with the BHHS Music Program since I was in Year 7, and it was then that I picked up clarinet, learning for three years while playing in the band, along with singing in the school's Junior Choir for my first two years. I stopped learning clarinet after three years, but I ended up playing in the school's Wind Symphony for two additional years after I stopped learning. During this time, I also took piano lessons outside of school and became the school's choir accompanist in Year 9 where I still play as the choir accompanist for the choir. Being in the music program has been an enriching and rewarding experience for me, as it has let me pursue my many different musical interests. It has also aided in my approach to music and my musical expression - seeing how my band director expressed different moods helped me to understand different aspects of musicality and express this in my playing more proficiently, both on piano and clarinet. This year I am studying Music Performance 3/4 on Piano (classical) which will be invaluable for my development as a musician. TIFFANY AND COLE 3
