2 GENERAL INFORMATION AND GUIDELINES The Conservatory offers a large number of honours and awards. Teachers should enter as many deserving students as possible to make sure the competition for the scholarships remains strong. Students are also encouraged to submit an application themselves. Each year, different members of the Faculty are asked to join the Scholarship Committee (consisting of Heads of Departments, plus one Faculty member of each Department, plus the Conservatory Head). Participation entails judging students in your own field (string, piano, etc.), on a subcommittee, as well as joining the full committee in discussing Conservatory-wide awards (Director's Gold Medal, etc.). (1) All awards/honours received by the student since last year's Celebration of Excellence, are eligible for inclusion. (i.e., Provincial honours, band, orchestra and choir participation, and any honours received during the last Saskatchewan Music Festival Association competitions). (2) All awards/honours at all grade levels should be included. (3) Students must have attended at least 10 lessons (during the current scholarship year September 1, 2014 to May 1, 2015), prior to submitting a scholarship application. (4) To be considered for any award or scholarship, students must have appeared in at least ONE Conservatory recital prior to submitting a scholarship application. (5) Please have all student recommendations for non-auditioned awards in to the Conservatory General Office BY NOON, FRIDAY, MAY 1, Scholarship Entry/Recommendation Forms which do not include ALL THE NECESSARY INFORMATION will be considered incomplete and ineligible for consideration. (6) Scholarships not used by June 30 th of the following year are no longer available to the student. (7) The age limit of the various Awards and Scholarships is as of January 1, (8) The awards and scholarships will be presented on Wednesday, June 10 at 7:00 pm at our Celebration of Excellence. (9) Awarding of scholarships and awards will be dependent on the receipt of funds from the donors, which will be confirmed after the deadline for submissions. (10) Monies awarded must be used at the Conservatory of Performing Arts or another accredited music institution. (11) The deliberations of the Scholarship Committee are confidential and the decisions are final, no appeals will be considered. Bursaries Bursaries are based on financial need and follow a different application process. Information about bursaries can be found in the Conservatory Bursaries document. Please speak to either your instructor, Department Head, the Head of the Conservatory or the office staff for more information.
3 DESCRIPTION OF NON-AUDITIONED SCHOLARSHIPS Piano Nadia Woroby Memorial Music Scholarship (Piano or Violin) $ To be awarded to a student, between the ages of years old, studying either piano or violin and has demonstrated outstanding musical talent in the given year as exhibited in musical festivals, recitals and/or examinations. In the event of two or more equally qualified candidates, preference will be given to the student who has not received other Conservatory scholarships in the award year. Past recipients are eligible to receive this award more than once, but no more than 3 times. The Wallis Memorial Scholarship $ "Senior Piano and/or Voice student May not be split. The scholarship may be paid to an accredited musical institution where the student intends to continue studying. Dorothy Bee Memorial Scholarship $ "Advanced piano student(s) - Grade IX and up May be divided with equal amount to two recipients" Ast Music Awards for Piano $ X2 Two awards of $400 each to be presented to piano students based on financial need (refer to the Conservatory bursaries). If not awarded through the bursary process, $800 can be divided between a number of piano students based on the recommendation of the Conservatory Scholarship Committee. Bee/Wallis Piano Scholarship $ "A Piano Scholarship has been established by Gordon C. Wallis, former Assistant Director, Conservatory of Performing Arts, University of Regina, to be named "The Bee-Wallis Piano Scholarship". The late Dorothy W. Bee was a distinguished piano teacher of the Conservatory and Department of Music. The scholarship will be for further study and will be awarded to a student of piano in the upper intermediate level (Grades 8 or 9 in music), studying at the Conservatory of Performing Arts, University of Regina, with the first award to be made in The award will be made by the Conservatory Scholarship Committee on the recommendation of submissions by Conservatory teachers and will be based on talent and industry. The following regulations will apply: No scholarship need be awarded if no suitable candidate is available. The scholarship may be paid to an accredited musical institution where the student intends to continue studying. Gaylord Wight Memorial Scholarship $ Margaret & Leslie Reed Award $50.00 To be awarded to appropriate students in the area of piano. Barker's Trophy for Junior Piano Regina Conservatory Silver Medal for Piano (playing in a number of recitals, festivals, competitions), and will have been a student at the institution for an extended period of time. Such factors as performance standard, senior exam results, awards, etc., will be taken into consideration."
4 Winds & Brass Conservatory Gala Scholarship $ "This award is given to deserving wind and brass students at the "junior" and "intermediate" levels. By tradition, it has been divided into $50 units, but may be given as one award. All recipients must have played in at least one Conservatory Recital. Such factors as exam results, festival marks and placement and general playing ability will be considered." Regina Conservatory Trophy for Winds and Brass "Traditionally, this trophy has been given to a player 14 or younger (though not specified), who is studying at a junior level of performance. As with similar awards, the recipient will have played in at least one Conservatory recital. General level of performance, progress, exam results and festival marks and placement may all be considered, but are not necessarily equally weighted." Regina Conservatory Silver Medal for Winds (playing in a number of recitals, festivals, competitions and being active in ensembles (S.S.Y.O., etc.), and will have been a student at the institution for an extended period of time. Such factors as performance standard, senior exam results, awards, etc., will be taken into consideration." Regina Conservatory Silver Medal Brass (playing in a number of recitals, festivals, competitions and being active in ensembles (S.S.Y.O., etc.), and will have been a student at the institution for an extended period of time. Such factors as performance standard, senior exam results, awards, etc., will be taken into consideration." Williams Family Award in Wind and Brass Non-Auditioned $ $200 to be distributed to a single wind or brass student or can be divided between a number of wind and/or brass students based on the recommendation of the Conservatory Scholarship Committee. The scholarship will be awarded to students who meet the following criteria: -are pursuing studies in a wind and/or brass instrument -demonstrate ability and technique in their chosen wind and/or brass instrument -display hard work and express a passion for their instrument, but do not necessarily demonstrate the most talent String Nadia Woroby Memorial Music Scholarship (Piano or Violin) $ See piano section for details. Duke Memorial Scholarship $ Clarence T. Darke Memorial Scholarship $ Traditionally this scholarship has been divided into a number of smaller scholarships. James Memorial Scholarship $ Traditionally this scholarship has been divided into an unspecified number of smaller scholarships.
5 Lowe Family Conservatory of Performing Arts Bursary The Lowe Family awards are based on financial need. Recipients must be between the ages of Students must have attended the Conservatory for a least one year. Guitar Conservatory Guitar Scholarship $50.00 "This award is given to deserving guitar student. Recipients must have played in at least one Conservatory Recital. General playing ability will be considered." Bell Centennial Scholarship for Voice (age group of 9 to 13 years) $ This scholarship will be awarded to a Conservatory of Performing Arts student who meets the following criteria: Continuing study at the Conservatory, pursuing studies in voice (preference will be given to students who are also studying theory), displays vocal ability in lessons and recital performances, and attempts to study classical repertoire.
6 Regina Conservatory Silver Medal for Voice (playing in a number of recitals, festivals, competitions), and will have been a student at the institution for an extended period of time. Such factors as performance standard, senior exam results, awards, etc., will be taken into consideration. Conservatory Juventus Concert Choir Scholarship $ Conservatory Juventus Junior Choir Scholarship $ Music Student with Disability Gladys Angley Scholarship $ This scholarship was established to enable those with a disability to have easier access to the study of music (performance). It is to be awarded to a Conservatory music student of any age with a disability. To be considered, scholarship applicants must be a person with a long-term and reoccurring disability that restricts that person s ability to participate in educational activities. This limitation is expected to remain with the person for life. Please use the appropriate application form. Dance Richard Laursen Memorial Scholarship $ This scholarship in memory of Richard Laursen is to be awarded to a promising dance student administered by the Conservatory Scholarship Committee. In selecting a recipient, preference will be given to a male student and selection will be on the basis of performance and potential. Wynn Haldemann Scholarship $50.00 To be awarded to a promising dance student. Regina Conservatory Silver Medal for Dance (playing in a number of recitals, competitions), and will have been a student at the institution for an extended period of time. Such factors as performance standard, senior exam results, awards, etc., will be taken into consideration." Spoken & Dramatic Arts Mitchell Freeman Award in Stage and Screen $ Student must be enrolled in a Conservatory Spoken and Dramatic Arts program. Available to students aged General Scholarships M. E. Mann Award $ As in the past, this scholarship may be paid to an accredited musical institution where the student intends to continue studying. University of Regina Scholarships $ To be awarded to appropriate students in any discipline. This scholarship may be split.
7 Centre for Continuing Education Director s Scholarship $ To be awarded to an outstanding student in any discipline. Other Awards Two Season's Tickets for the R.S.O. Master Works Concert Series For a promising music student, to be selected by the Scholarship Committee. Certificates of Recognition To be awarded to those students who have studied hard and diligently throughout the year (to be limited to 3-4 per area of discipline). President's Gold Medal This medal is awarded annually to the most outstanding instrumental or vocal student at the Conservatory. Guidelines: 1) Exam and festival results, notable performances, awards and honours, theory and/or pedagogy results. Participation in local, regional, provincial and national events will be considered. 2) Preference will be given to students who regularly perform in Conservatory events, including recitals, concerts and ensemble presentations. 3) Each Department's Scholarship Sub-Committee will forward to the Conservatory administrative assistant, prior to the final Full Scholarship Committee Meeting, any names of individuals to be recommended for the President's Gold Medal. 4) The Full Scholarship Committee shall vote on the President's Gold Medal. Director's Gold Medal This medal is awarded annually to the instrumental or vocal student who has most consistently shown a high standard of performance and overall development. Guidelines: 1) Exam and festival results, notable performances, awards and honours, theory and/or pedagogy results. Participation in local, regional, provincial and national events will be considered. 2) Preference will be given to students who regularly perform in Conservatory events, including recitals, programs, concerts and ensemble presentations. 3) Each Department's Scholarship Sub-Committee will forward to the Conservatory administrative assistant, prior to the final Full Scholarship Committee Meeting, any names of individuals to be recommended for the Director's Gold Medal. 4) The Full Scholarship Committee shall vote on the Director's Gold Medal.
8 NON-AUDITIONED RECOMMENDATION FOR AWARDS - CLOSING EXERCISES (DEADLINE - Must be handed into Conservatory General Office by Noon, Friday, May 1st, 2015) Notes: * Students must have performed in at least one Conservatory Recital PRIOR to May 1st to be considered for an award. * Attended at least 10 lessons prior to May 1st, 2015 * If they are awarded a scholarship, students will have to provide their Social Insurance Number (for tax receipt purposes). PLEASE COMPLETE IN FULL: The University collects information under authority of The University of Regina Act in accordance with the Local Authority Freedom of Information & Protection of Privacy Act and the Personal Information Protection & Electronic Documents Act.
