Spring is often cited as one of the favourite times of the year for many people. It is a time of renewal, new growth and new opportunity. Spring always brings forth a buzz of activity in the school and in classrooms, and may be a symbol of our continued efforts as a school community to work together in supporting and promoting the academic, social and emotional growth of our students. We are now well into the second term of this school year. In moving forward towards the goals of academic success, I encourage you to contact your child s teacher(s) and the school on a regular basis to ensure that expectations regarding next steps for your child are put into action, and clearly understood by all involved: students, parents, teachers, and administration. We continue to encourage a proactive approach to productive and collaborative partnerships! On February 13th, 2015, we hosted our second Open House and Welcome! evening at Charles Howitt P.S. Over one hundred parents and children attended the evening a wonderful turn-out by any standard for an event of this kind! The evening provided an opportunity for the school to listen to the ideas and perspectives of all families in the community, as well as afforded a chance for families new to the school to meet their neighbours. We are already using the information gathered during the evening to support our work going forward as a school, and look forward to future events such as this one. Special thanks go out to the Charles Howitt School Council, community partners and teachers who both supported and participated in the event. Well done! I would like to extend a thank you to our parent community for their efforts in supporting safe driving and parking practices during the very busy pick-up and drop-off times at school. It is both hoped for, and encouraged that, with the coming of warmer weather, parents will encourage their children who are not eligible for bussing, to walk to and from school. This is not only a healthy practice, but also reduces significant traffic congestion around the school. We have noted that school busses often have a difficult time entering the school property to drop students off; the less traffic on the road, the safer the conditions are for both pedestrians and motorists, alike! At all times, please feel free to contact the school should you have any comments or questions! There is no school during this week.
2 Page 2 Planning for September If you will be moving out of our area in the next 4 to 6 months, please let the office know of your intentions at your earliest convenience. We are well under way in planning for September, 2015 and it is critical that we have accurate numbers at all stages of the process. We ask that families assist us with these preparations by informing the office (in writing) if you are moving out of the Charles Howitt P.S. area. Please include the last day of attendance and the school your child(ren) will be attending. This will also facilitate in the transfer of your child s records (OSR). Thank you! Kindergarten Registration A reminder that Kindergarten Registration for September, 2015 is underway. Eligible children will have been born in 2011 (JK) or 2010 (SK). If you know of anyone in the community with Kindergarten-age children, please share this information with them. Students currently in our Junior Kindergarten classes do not need to register for Senior Kindergarten. NOTICE: Students new to Canada must first make an appointment to visit the Board s Reception Centre before registering at our school. Please call them at for an appointment. Reminder about Epi-Pens Parents of Anaphylactic children are reminded that we require two Epi-pens be in the school at all times (one in the office and one with the student). As well, parents must replace Epi-pens that have expired prior to the expiration date. If parents choose to leave a Twinject at school, only the first auto-injected dose will be administered by staff. An additional Epipen must be provided and kept with the child. A further reminder to all parents that we do not allow birthday cakes, etc. to be sent in (as expressed in our nut-free policy). If you would like to send something else in (i.e. pencils, stickers, etc.), that would be fine. Thank you for helping us keep your children safe! Important Bussing Message School Council News Re: Student Bussing Eligibility Did you know that students bussing eligibility changes throughout their school career? Your son/ daughter s eligibility to ride the school bus may change according to their grade and distance from home to school. Below are the provisions for eligibility identified in the Board s Transportation Policy #680: All YRDSB students in Grades JK-3 who live within 1.2 km of their school are not eligible for transportation To view Board Policy #680 Student Transportation, please visit For more information about bus transportation and to determine your son/ daughter s eligibility please visit *Please note: As Yonge Street is a major roadway, all students living east of Yonge Street are eligible for bussing regardless of age. Dear Parents, The School Council would like to extend our thanks to all of those students and their families who supported our Valentine's Day Dance-athon last month. We raised over $1700! For every $10 a student raised, they received 1 ballot that they could enter into 5 exciting draws. Congratulations to all of our lucky winners! Thank you to our Teachers and Staff who supervised the students during the Dance-a-thon and to the School Council and Mr. Gervais who donated raffle prizes. Money raised will support Athletic, Technology and Literacy initiatives at Charles Howitt. If you are interested in joining our Fun Fair committee, or would like to make a donation of a new item for our silent auction or raffle, please contact Hayley Brunswick: hayleybrunswick@rogers.com Thank you for your continued support, CHPS School Council School Council Important Dates Tuesdays - Pizza continues until June Thursdays - continues until June Mon/Wed/Fri - Kids Kitchen is available, please check their website for details Monday April 13th- Next Council 7 pm Save the Date...Thursday June 4th-CHPS Fun Fair 5-8 pm Charles Howitt Website Just a reminder to parents to visit our website for school information and to view our monthly newsletters.
