IMPLEMENTATION GUIDE for MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY ONLINE for MASTERING HEALTHCARE TERMINOLOGY, Third Edition Module 7: Male Reproductive System OVERVIEW Module 7 in Medical Terminology Online accompanies Chapter 7 in Mastering Healthcare Terminology, third edition. This module explores the medical terminology associated with the male reproductive system. Students are given a chance to become familiar with the medical terms that describe the anatomy and physiology of the male reproductive system. In addition, they will have a good understanding of terms that specify related disorders, as well as terms for tests and procedures that are used to diagnose and treat a variety of conditions. Activities allow students to get as much review and practice as they need to become proficient in the practical application of medical terminology. Activities in this module require students to use some of the basic word parts and directional terms, planes, regions, and quadrants introduced in Module 1 and Module 2. It is recommended that students have the text available for ready reference. Module Section Quizzes (self-assessment tools) and a Module Exam are provided. Students can assess what they have learned by taking each section's Quiz as often as they like to practice for the module exam; each quiz has a grading/scoring component available for the instructor s convenience. The Module Exam also offers a grading/scoring component. RESOURCES The following are key resources available to support online teaching of medical terminology associated with the male reproductive system: Student and Instructor Textbook Mastering Healthcare Terminology, third edition, Chapter 7. Online Course Medical Terminology Online, Module 7. This is the instructor implementation guide for that module. Student CD Located in the back of each copy of the text is a CD containing activities and games that will reinforce the medical terminology taught in each lesson of the book. Included is a glossary with definitions of all word parts. Pronunciation, Spelling and Word Building activities for each text lesson are also provided. Audio Program Available online, the audio program for Mastering Healthcare Terminology allows students to hear and spell the pronunciation and definition of each term. Instructor Only Instructor Online Tools Medical Terminology Online provides instructors with the following collaboration, communication, and assessment tools: 1

TEACH TEACH (Total Education and Curriculum Help) provides a complete set of customizable lesson plans, curriculum guides, and instructor-development resources to work in conjunction with Mastering Healthcare Terminology, third edition. Also included are an image collection, test bank, PowerPoints, and extra handouts for classroom activities. For more details on these resources, please consult the Introduction section within the TEACH manual and the Evolve Learning System User s Manual. CLASSROOM METHODS You can coordinate the Medical Terminology Online course resources with your instructor-led program in several ways. Here are several blended learning options: Option 1: Integrated Use all or part of the Medical Terminology Online course as a visual aid, navigating and discussing lesson content as a group. Option 2: Prerequisite Require students to complete all or part of the online lesson on their own (self-paced) before participating in a synchronous class session or asynchronous online discussion. 2

Option 3: Reinforcement Prompt students to review all or part of the online lesson on their own (self-paced) after a synchronous class session or asynchronous online discussion. Each module is designed to accommodate different learning styles and to facilitate ease of use for review. There are three possible tracks you can take or direct your students to take through the module: Lesson Approach Learn about patients in case studies, listen to and read short discussions with frequent quizzes, and encounter all animations and activities as they occur within the lesson. This is an instructionally complete lesson supporting the stated learning objectives. Activities Only Learn by completing each of the lesson exercises to test comprehension of the material. Media Only Learn by reviewing each of the lesson animations, reinforcing comprehension of the material. The Activities and Media sections in the online course are excellent tools for an efficient review of the content, either as an individual or in a group. Remember to account for the whole learning experience of the students, not just what happens in class. Experience has shown that most students have embraced the online learning process and will be self-motivated to complete the self-paced instruction. However, some of your students may not fully appreciate the value of the experience and feedback that online learning provides. Those students will require more prompting, and in the beginning it is useful to explain to them the different tracks that they can take through the online content. Section I: Anatomy and Physiology In this section, students will learn to recognize and use terms related to the anatomy and physiology of the male reproductive system. In particular, they should be able to do the following: Recognize and define anatomy and physiology terms for the male reproductive system Label male reproductive anatomy Pronounce and spell terms related to male reproductive anatomy and physiology This section includes the following lesson: Lesson 1: Male Reproductive System Log on to the online course and, at the beginning of Module 7, select Module 7 Media, then select Section I: Anatomy and Physiology. The following animation is provided: Pathway of Sperm 3

With the class, review and discuss the Anatomy and Physiology section in Chapter 7 of Mastering Healthcare Terminology. Refer students to the online course activities as you review. then select Section I: Anatomy and Physiology. Activities from each of the lessons are listed in the order in which they appear within the lesson. Threaded Case Study: Frank A case study is presented at the beginning of this section and threaded throughout the module. Students are introduced to Frank, who has recently turned 65 years old. He tells his doctor, Dr. Kane, about difficulties he has been having urinating, and that he suspects a problem with his prostate. Frank also reports that occasionally he has had blood in his urine. Section II: Pathologic Conditions In this section, students will learn to recognize and use terms and abbreviations related to the pathology of the male reproductive system. In particular, they should be able to do the following: Analyze, define, and build male reproductive system pathology terms Pronounce and spell terms related to male reproductive system pathology This section includes the following lessons: Lesson 1: Congenital Disorders Lesson 2: Inflammatory, Enlargement, and Other Disorders Lesson 3: Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) Lesson 4: Neoplasms With the class, review and discuss the Pathology Terms found in Chapter 7 of Mastering Healthcare Terminology. Refer students to the online course activities as you review. then select Section II: Pathologic Conditions. Activities from each of the lessons are listed in the order in which they appear within the lesson. Section III: Diagnostic Procedures and Therapeutic Interventions In this section students will learn to recognize and use terms and abbreviations related to the diagnostic procedures and therapeutic interventions of the male reproductive system. In particular, they should be able to do the following: 4

Analyze, define, and build male reproductive diagnostic procedure and therapeutic intervention terms Pronounce and spell terms related to male reproductive diagnostic procedures and therapeutic interventions Recognize and define abbreviations used to describe male reproductive diagnostic procedures and therapeutic interventions This section includes the following lessons: Lesson 1: Diagnostic Procedures Lesson 2: Therapeutic Interventions With the class, review and discuss the Diagnostic Procedure and Therapeutic Intervention Terms found in Chapter 7 of Mastering Healthcare Terminology. Refer students to the online course activities as you review. then select Section III: Diagnostic Procedures and Therapeutic Interventions. Activities from each of the lessons are listed in the order in which they appear within the lesson. Section IV: Building Your Word Bank Section IV of the module provides students the opportunity to practice with word parts specific to the male reproductive system. Students who need additional review of the construction of medical terms using basic word parts and body structure should be directed to review Module 1 and Module 2. then select Section IV: Building Your Word Bank. Activities from Section IV of the module are listed in the order in which they appear within the lesson. Section V: Applications Section V provides students the opportunity to apply their knowledge of male reproductive system terminology by working with Case Studies and a Medical Report. With the class, review and discuss a medical report involving the male reproductive system. 5

then select Section V: Applications. Activities for a Medical Report and Case Studies are provided. Learning Links At the end of every module you'll find a section called Learning Links a list of web sites related to the male reproductive system. As either an individual or group assignment, have students use the Learning Links to research selected terms or topics associated with diseases and treatment of the male reproductive system. 6
