3 Shifting industry dynamics raise new challenges Before the development of 3G and 4G technology, the telecommunications business was dominated by voice communications. Monitoring networks and keeping their performance high was a relatively manageable undertaking even for very large providers like China Mobile Communications Corporation, the biggest mobile telecommunications company in the world. But when 3G and 4G emerged and began to grow explosively, network traffic skyrocketed and maintaining network performance became far more challenging. Quality measures shifted from traditional key performance indicators to user satisfaction, from reactive user service to proactive security and loss protection, and from controlling costs to adding value. High on the list of companies that address these changing needs is Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd., a global leader in information and communication technologies that provides a wide range of telecommunications network equipment products, IT services and solutions, and smart devices. Huawei responded to the rapid change in telecommunications industry dynamics by developing a product called SEQ Analyst (for Quality of Services and user Experience). This product ingests large amounts of operational data from telecommunications networks and analyzes it to help network operators make timely decisions for a range of purposes including network security, engineering, customer support, and marketing. China Mobile is one of Huawei s largest customers for SEQ Analyst and uses it primarily for service quality monitoring and diagnosis. 3 / 6

4 SAP IQ: disk-backed column store for large-scale analytics As network traffic continues to grow exponentially, customer databases are imposing ever-greater demands on SEQ Analyst. China Mobile s database contains more than 200 terabytes of compressed data derived from 450 terabytes of raw data. Just as challenging are the rates of ingesting new data 1.5 terabytes every day, in China Mobile s case. To meet these demands, Huawei conducted an extensive search of database products to find one to serve as the heart of SEQ Analyst. SAP IQ software was the firm s choice due to its support for commodity hardware, ease of administration, rich Structured Query Language (SQL) dialect, and excellent performance and scalability important characteristics for embedding in analytics applications. SAP IQ also demonstrated superior data-loading speed and high data-compression ratios between 30% and 40% for many tables. In addition, its column store technology allows efficient querying of data from certain selected database columns rather than all, a scenario that arises frequently in SEQ Analyst applications. Finally, clusters in SAP IQ share all infrastructure resources, making it convenient to scale out servers and storage. The SEQ Analyst configuration at China Mobile contains a 17-node multiplex running version 15.4 of SAP IQ. The servers run Linux, and the storage technology used is fibre channel storage area network. Since storage is limited, China Mobile maintains only the most recent 60 days of data. The system handles a heavy workload of concurrent ad hoc queries and data loads. 5 Optimizing service quality for a better user experience SEQ Analyst is helping customers like China Mobile monitor, analyze, and optimize their service quality and thereby improve the user experience. It provides timely notification of service failures and other quality issues. Major modules provide security quality management, customer service enhancement, and achievement of service-level agreements. SEQ Analyst is a core solution for monitoring, managing, and analyzing the quality of services and for handling user complaints. 6 Huawei New enhancements help keep pace with growing demands As telecommunications carriers fully deploy 4G, the amount of data that SEQ Analyst must process and analyze will become far larger than today s already massive volumes. That is why Huawei has begun moving from version 15.4 of SAP IQ to version 16 and plans to soon standardize completely on this latest release. The SEQ Analyst staffers at Huawei expect version 16 to be able to manage databases in the hundreds of terabytes with high levels of performance and stability.
