2 The EXCITING ANNUAL CANOE TRIP has been scheduled. This trip is open to all scouts, parents and family members. This year we will be heading to Ascutney Vermont and canoeing on the scenic Connecticut River This is one of our most popular camping trips don t miss it! We will start our journey by meeting at Wapping Church at 5:30 pm. We plan on departing from Wapping Church by 6:00 pm and should arrive at Mount Ascutney State Park around 8:00pm. We recommend that you plan on eating dinner before you leave; we will not be making any planned stops. Upon arrival, we will immediately set up camp and relax around a campfire. Directions to the park: From I-91 (Exit 8): Go.2 mi. E on Rt 131 to stop light, turn left on Rt. 5 for 1.2 mi., then bear left on Rt. 44A for 1 mi. Here is a link to the park: We will be camping in the Lean-To Shelters. Here is a link to the map: Our Sites are: Aspen, Beech, Oak, Maple, Spruce, Pine, Ash, White Birch, Cherry, Cedar as well as sites 25, 26, 27, 28 & 29. The link above has an interactive map that can show you pictures of the sites. Families will be assigned a site. There will be room for parking at each of the sites. Bathrooms and showers are only a hop/skip and jump away!
3 Saturday Wake up call won t be until 7:30am on Saturday. After a leisurely breakfast, we will take a short drive over the river to Cornish New Hampshire and North Star Canoe. From there we will be bused up to our drop off point to start our river adventure!! We will spend about half of the day traveling down the Connecticut River, with the current (Vermont will be on our right side and New Hampshire on our left). Our final destination will be North Star Canoe in Cornish. From there we will return to our camp sites and enjoy the park. We will take breaks along the way for: site seeing, Eagle sightings, Water Wars, as well as taking an hour lunch on the river. Back in camp; we can relax, shower and cook our own family dinners. Saturday evening we can have a pot luck dessert gathering and have lots of fun sitting and sharing stories around a Bonfire while we make Smores! Sunday morning we will cook our own breakfast, pack-up and be on the road home by 10:00am. Water fights of course are legal on this trip you must supply your own water gun or super-soaker. There will be an option for those who choose to stay dry and maintain a dry canoe. Who should attend? All scouts and their families/parents are invited. When do we leave? We will meet at Wapping church at 5:30 and depart by 6:00 pm on Friday June 5 th. When do we return? Sunday June 7 th between 1-2pm. (We will have the scouts call their parents when we are 1 hour from the church). What is the cost? $35 per scout (The Troop is covering the cost for camping for all scouts!) and $45 for all other family members. This includes the use of the canoe/kayak, paddles, lifejacket, and the campsite fee. Campers only, pay $10 /pp.
4 What to bring: Scouts and parents/families need to bring their own food, utensils, disposable paper & plastic ok, and cooking supplies (i.e.-small gas stoves-these can be borrowed from the troop). Scouts that are attending without family members can cook together by patrols (they will still need to bring their own food). Water guns and cut jugs (milk gallon or liquid laundry detergent containers with the bottoms cut out) are great for throwing water and important for bailing (don t forget the rope to tie it to your canoe). You need to bring one of these. We will designate a few canoes as dry canoes only for those that don t want to get wet. Bring a small waterproof bag that you can get to quickly and easily while on the water (for towel, food, drinks and ect.). We will each need to pack a dry bag lunch, which we will stop and eat while on the river. Plastic 5 gallon buckets with tight lids make great dry storage containers. Also bring plenty of snacks and drinks for the on the water for the day. Nylon wind wick-out pants and shirt can be great for staying warmer and dryer. Also a wind breaker, fleece jacket and poncho come in handy. Jeans and sweatshirts are not advisable- too heavy when wet!!! Sunscreens, bug spray, PANCHOS (in case of rain) are highly recommended. Please be aware that we are requesting no rain and lots of sunshine! Also Handy: Plastic bailer with rope attached to tie to your canoe, super-soakers (the bigger the better) and even a waterproof camera for those memory shots and Eagle sightings! What to pack for camping: Food for Saturday & Sunday breakfast, bag lunch for on the river and Saturday night dinner. Cookware, normal camping gear (see checklist in your scout manual or on website).tent (can check one out from the troop), sleeping bag, ground cloth, mess kit, utensils, flashlight and etc. Portable chairs are also very nice for sitting near the campfire. Bring extra sneakers, or hiking shoes, underwear, socks, pants/shorts, and shirt. Also a fishing pole for in camp. Assume whatever you wear in the canoe will get wet! Hot showers are available at camp, as well as bathrooms and general store too. Safety: Younger first year scouts (12 and under) must be paired with their own parent, or guardian, or they are not eligible to attend this trip. We will be using North Star Canoe, as our Outfitters. You can check them
